1. Definition
La maintenance est lensemble de toutes les actions techniques, administratives et de management
durant le cycle de vie d'un bien, destines le maintenir ou le rtablir dans un tat dans lequel il
peut accomplir la fonction requise.
Maintenance is defined as the combination of actions intended to retain an item in, or restore
it to, a state in which it can perform the function that is required for the item to provide a given
service.
Le CYCLE DE VIE d'un bien commence la conception du bien et se termine avec son limination.
The life cycle of a good begins at the conception of the good and ends with its elimination.
La FONCTION REQUISE d'un bien est la fonction ou l'ensemble des fonctions considres comme
ncessaires pour fournir un service donn.
The required function of a good is the function or the whole of functions considered as necessary to
provide a given service.
MAINTENIR contient la notion de PRVENTION et rtablir contient la notion de CORRECTION.

A maintenance policy is one of the most important elements of effective maintenance
management. It is essential for continuity of operations and a clear understanding of the maintenance
management program, regardless of the size of a maintenance organization. Usually, maintenance
organizations have manuals containing items such as policies, programs, objectives, responsibilities,
and authorities for all levels of supervision, reporting requirements, useful methods and techniques,
and performance measurement indices.
3. THE MAINTENANCE FUNCTION
MAINTENANCE is a function in full part in the company. Therefore, it should by optimization be a
source of profit.
Maintenance intervens at all the levels of the life cycle of a good, from its conception to its
elimination.

MAINTENANCE PREVENTIVE: maintenance excute des intervalles prdtermins ou

selon des critres prescrits et destine rduire la probabilit de dfaillance ou la dgradation du
fonctionnement d'un bien.
4.1.
Preventive maintenance
Preventive maintenance is defined as maintenance carried out at predetermined intervals or
according to prescribed criteria and intended to reduce the probability of failure or the degradation of
the functioning of the equipment. Preventive maintenance can be predetermined or condition based:
Maintenance systmatique : maintenance prventive excute des intervalles de temps
prtablis ou selon un nombre dfini d'units d'usage mais sans contrle pralable de l'tat du
bien.

 Maintenance conditionnelle : maintenance prventive base sur une surveillance du

fonctionnement du bien et/ou des paramtres significatifs de ce fonctionnement intgrant les
actions qui en dcoulent.
Predetermined maintenance. Preventive maintenance carried out in accordance with
established intervals of time or number of units of use (i.e. scheduled maintenance) but
without previous item condition investigation;
Condition based maintenance. Preventive maintenance based on performance and/or
parameter monitoring and the subsequent actions
MAINTENANCE CORRECTIVE: maintenance excute aprs dtection d'une panne et
destine remettre un bien dans un tat dans lequel il peut accomplir une fonction requise.
Si lintervention doit tre immdiate, la maintenance corrective sera qualifie durgence.
Si au contraire lintervention peut tre reporte on parlera de maintenance corrective diffre.
4.2.
Corrective maintenance :
Corrective maintenance is maintenance carried out after fault recognition and intended to put the
equipment into a state in which it can perform a required function. Corrective maintenance can be
immediate or deferred

Immediate maintenance. Maintenance which is carried out without delay after a fault has
been detected to avoid unacceptable consequences;
Deferred maintenance. Corrective maintenance which is not immediately carried out after a
fault detection but is delayed according to given maintenance rules.

5. Maintenance activities
Maintenance types consist of a set of maintenance activities in a given sequence.
Most common maintenance activities can be listed and defined as follows:
Inspection: Check for conformity by measuring, observing, testing or gauging the relevant
characteristics of an item
Monitoring: Activity performed either manually or automatically intended to observe the
actual state of the equipment. Monitoring is distinguished from inspection in that it is used to
evaluate any changes in the parameters of the equipment with time. Monitoring may be
continuous, over an interval of time, or after a given number of operation
Routine maintenance: Regular or repeated elementary maintenance activities which usually
do not require special qualification, authorization(s) or tools. Routine maintenance may
include, for example, cleaning, tightening of connections, checking liquid level, lubrication,
etc.;
Overhaul. A comprehensive set of examinations and actions carried out in order to maintain
the required level of availability and safety of the equipment.
Rebuilding. Action following the dismantling of the equipment and the repair or replacement
of those components that are approaching the end of their useful life and/or should be
regularly replaced.
Repair: Physical action taken to restore the required function of faulty equipment

vrifier que le bien est capable d'accomplir la fonction
requise.

EXEMPLE DACTIVIT
Vrifier laide dun wattmtre que la puissance
du moteur de broche des tours commande
numrique est comprise entre 15 et 16 kW.
Mesure du niveau de vibrations broche :
vitesse (10-1000 Hz)
acclration (2-20 kHz)
Contrler les arrts d'urgence et les capots de
scurit.
