La ville de Biarritz offre une trs grande diversit de plages sur environ 6
kilomtres : falaises, rochers, sable, criques, tendues qui courent jusqu
lhorizon des montagnes mare basse. Le respect et la sauvegarde de
lenvironnement tant essentiels, Biarritz poursuit ses efforts et perfec-
tionne ses mthodes pour protger son littoral et ses eaux de baignade.

Biarritz berceau europen du surf
1957 : Peter Viertel, le mari de lactrice Deborah Kerr en tournage dans la
rgion pour le film Le Soleil se lve aussi dbarque avec ses planches
sur la plage de la Cte des Basques, sous le regard mdus des Biarrots qui
voient pour la premire fois en Europe un homme debout sur une vague !
Ainsi nat le surf en Europe, et pour Biarritz son surnom de capitale euro-
penne et de Mecque du surf.
Biarritz has around 6 kms of outstanding beaches along the coast with
cliffs, rocks, sand, coves and stretches where you can see all the way to the
mountains at low tide. Respectful of nature and preservation of its coast-
line, Biarritz focuses on environment protection and perfects its methods
to protect its multiple bathing spots. Surf schools and beach clubs for chil-
dren are available on every beach.
The American scriptwriter Peter Viertel came to Biarritz in 1957 with his
wife Deborah Kerr to shoot his film The sun also rises. He brought his
surf boards to practice surfing, an original sport imported from Hawai, on
Biarritz Cte des Basques. Very quickly, Biarritz gained a reputation as
one of the best spots for surfing in Europe and now attracts surfers from
all over the world.

Napolon III dcida de lutiliser comme point dancrage de la digue du port
du Refuge quil voulait crer. Limposant Rocher de la Vierge fut reli la
terre par un pont en bois, remplac par une passerelle mtallique attribue
Gustave Eiffel. Ce rocher doit son nom actuel la Statue de la Vierge
rige son sommet en 1865. Napoleon III decided to use this impressive
rock as an anchor point for the sea wall of the Port du Refuge he planned
to create. The rock was also connected to the land by a wooden bridge (now
a metal footbridge supposedly built by Gustav Eiffel).

La premire glise anglicane de Biarritz est inaugure
le 1er juillet 1861 dans la petite rue du Temple, dans
le quartier du Port-vieux. Six ans plus tard, la nces-
sit de pouvoir accueillir une colonie anglaise en
expansion simposera par la construction dun plus
grand difice. Il sera le plus grand difice anglican
de France aprs Paris. Trois plaques commmorent
les visites de personnalits britanniques illustres, la
reine Victoria (1889), le roi Edouard VII (1906 ; durant
ces cinq sjours, Biarritz, chaque dimanche, 11h,
il participera loffice), le duc de Wellington (1984).
Achete en 1980 par la ville de Biarritz, elle est sau-
ve de la destruction et mise, par la municipalit,
la disposition de lAssociation des Amis du Vieux
Biarritz , pour linstallation du Muse Historique.
The first Anglican church in Biarritz opened on July
1st, 1861 in the small Temple Street, close to the Port-
Vieux. On January 13th, 1876, Frederika of Hanover
laid the first stone of the new Anglican church, in a
neo-Gothic style and with a capacity of over 600 peo-
ple. It was to be the biggest Church of England build-
ing in France after Paris. On the wall of the entrance
porch, a memorial has been raised in tribute to the
British soldiers from Duke of Wellingtons army, who
died on nearby battlefields during fighting in 1813-
1814. Three plaques also pay homage to famous Brit-
ish leaders who came to visit : Queen Victoria (1889),
King Edward VII (1906 ; over the course of his five
stays in Biarritz, he attended the church service every
Sunday morning at 11) and the Duke of Wellington
(1984). Bought in 1980 by the city council of Biarritz,
the church was saved from destruction and put at the
disposal of the Amis du Vieux Biarritz Association
for them to set up the History Museum.

Elle a t construite vers 1892 par l'Ecossaise Mary
Thomson, veuve du plus important entrepreneur de
Biarritz , une femme d'affaires avise. Aprs sa mort
en 1907, le chalet fut lou la Socit des terrains
du golf qui y cra une clinique anglaise l'initiative
et sous le patronage du roi Edouard VII, le King
Edward's nursing home , qui lui offrit une ambu-
lance dernier cri pour l'poque. Les rsidents anglais y
taient soigns par une dizaine d'infirmires anglaises.
Pendant la Grande Guerre , George V mit l'tablis-
sement la disposition des soldats franais blesss et
soigns Biarritz. Durant la Seconde Guerre Mondiale,
les occupants allemands en firent un centre de dten-
tion. Sige de la justice de paix jusqu'en 1954, annexe
de la section htelire du collge technique des Ro-
cailles en 1966, rnove par la ville, elle abrite, de-
puis la rentre scolaire 2013, les locaux d'une annexe
du lyce Malraux, amnags pour l'enseignement du
BTS PHOTO, communication visuelle et multimdia.
It was erected around 1892 by the Scotswoman Mary
Thomson, a shrewd businesswoman and widow of the
greatest entrepreneur of Biarritz. After her death in
1907, the cottage was rented to the Golf Land Soci-
ety that built a British clinic there under the initiative
and patronage of King Edward VII. The King Edward's
nursing home provided him with, what was at the
time, a state-of-the-art ambulance. British residents
there were treated by about ten British nurses. Dur-
ing the Great War, George V put the establishment at
the disposal of the wounded French soldiers who were
nursed in Biarritz. During the Second World War, the
German occupiers made it into a detention centre. A
Justice of the Peace Court until 1954, it then became
an annex of the hotel management department of
Rocailles secondary school in 1966. Refurbished by
the city council, it has now become, since September
2013, a new part of Malraux high school, equipped for
teaching HND in Photography, Visual and Multimedia
Communication.

nand RUSSELL, officier de l'arme anglaise, descend-
ant d'une famille catholique de barons irlandais
de Killough fixs en France vers 1820 et installs
Pau. Ferdinand est le cadet d'une fratrie de quatre
enfants dont une fille Christine. C'est dans ce cha-
let qu'a sjourn en vacances chez son frre et est
mort l'un des premiers et des plus clbres pyrn-
istes, le comte Henry Russell (Toulouse 1834- Biar-
ritz 1909). Ce globe-trotter infatigable aprs un tour
du monde sur les cinq continents revient au pays en
1862 pour s'installer dans les Pyrnes, sa patrie .
Explorateur des deux versants pyrnens, il gravit
tous les pics, escalade des sommets inexplors ; ce
montagnard exceptionnel adopte le Vignemale
dont il obtient de la prfecture la concession pour

ante dix ans que le troglodyte des neiges se r-
sout quitter son glacier. Henry Russell a beaucoup
crit pour raconter le rcit de ses nombreux voy-
ages et ascensions ( 16000 lieues travers l'Asie et
L'Ocanie , Souvenirs d'un montagnard . Pau,
Biarritz, Pyrnes, d. Privat, 2009....). C'est le 5
fvrier 1909 que s'teint la villa Christine, terrass
par un cancer du foie, lui qui n'avait jamais t mal-
ade, cet exceptionnel montagnard en mme temps
qu'un crivain cultiv. Une plaque commmorative
a t appose rcemment sur la faade de la villa
par la propritaire actuelle, son arrire petite-nice.

This recently restored villa was erected in 1898-1900
by the architect Gustave Huguenin. Built of Bidache
stone with a balcony-conservatory, a loggia and red
shutters, it was bought by Count Ferdinand Russell,
officer of the British army, who was a descendant
of a Catholic family of Irish barons from Killough,
who had arrived in France around 1820 and settled
in Pau. Ferdinand was the youngest in a family of
four children, including a sister named Christine. It

was in this cottage that one of the first and most
famous pyreneists (Pyrenees enthusiasts), Count
Henry Russell, came on holidays to visit his brother
and later died in (Toulouse 1834 - Biarritz 1909). This 39
tireless globetrotter came back home in 1862 after a
round the world trip over five continents to settle in
the Pyrenees, his country. Explorer of both sides of
the Pyrenees, he climbed every summit and ascended
unexplored peaks this outstanding mountaineer
fell in love with mount Vignemale, for which he was
granted a concession from the Prefecture for 99 years
for 500 acres around the eastern glacier, consisting
of a heap of stones and snow as well as sterile and
useless rocks. He then dug seven caves into the
rock where he received visitors during the summer;
keeping stored there canned food and bottles of fine
wines. As a fine scholar, he even set up a library at an
for 200 nights, it was only at around seventy years
old that the cave dweller of the snow resolved to
leave his glacier. Henry Russell wrote a lot of books
telling the stories of his many travels and ascents
(16,000 leagues across Asia and Oceania , Memo-
ries of a mountain man Pau, Biarritz, Pyrenees, Pri-
vate Editions, 2009.... ). It is on February 5th, 1909
that he dies of liver cancer, at the Villa Christine, he
who had never been sick, this exceptional mountain
man as well as a cultivated writer. A commemorative
plaque was recently placed on the front of the villa by
the current owner, his great grandniece.
