Section B

Les Mains Sales, a problematic play written by Jean-Paul Sartre; is a political drama
unveiling many questions about ends and means, political morality and efficiency, leadership
and commitment. Many of those questions were raised in regards to the political life, which was
answered with “Full of schemes and the unexpected.” This essay will discuss the depiction of the
political life, through the actions done and things said by political leaders, as seen in Les Mains
Sales.

Let us first consider the theme of strategy; a strong quality of being a leader. Hoederer
is a very wise and strategic person, and this evident when he says “Quand il veut ganger, il vaut
Hoederer understands that it is better to have
outnumbered the enemy, as the aim of politics is to win. This is an example of scheme.

Secondly, let us explore the climax of the events of scene V. Hoederer, Karsky and the
Prince were having a discussion about politics and outlining the plan for War. However, Hugo
interrupted. When this occurred, Hugo became so angry that he attempted to pull out his
revolver, but no later a bomb was thrown inside the meeting area, seen by Hoederer when he
says “A plat ventre”. Luckily no one was injured. This is an example of unexpectedness. It never
occurred to the reader that a bomb was going to be thrown inside the meeting area; thinking
that Hugo was going to do the job that he came there to do.

One can also see aspects of unexpectedness in the relationships, as seen in Les Mains
Sales. Take into account when Jessica says “Je veux tout le monde”. It was unexpected that
Jessica, Hugo’s wife, could be a promiscuous person. However, it was revealed that later in the
text she kissed Hoederer, whom she’d been amused about while being with Hugo.

One can also that the murders in Les Mains Sales was expected. Take for example; the
death of Hoederer. When Jessica; embraced in Hoederer’s arms, kissed Hoederer and Hugo
entered, Hugo was upset and grabbed the gun and shot Hoederer three times.
