1‐ Une enfance difficile  
Gabrielle Chasnel, dite coco chanel, n'a que 12 ans quand sa mère meurt 
.son père l'abandonne pour s'installer en Amérique. Gabrielle grandit dans un 
orphelinat de Corrèze, avec ses 2 petites sœurs .Elle apprend la couture et 
devient modiste. Le surnom "COCO" lui vient des paroles d'une chanson qu'elle 
aimait chanter: qui qu'a vu coco dans l'Trocadéro? 
1‐ A difficult childhood 
Gabrielle Chasnel, known as coco Chanel, was only 12 years old when her mother 
died. Her father abandoned her to settle in America. Gabrielle grew up in an 
orphanage in Corrèze, with her 2 little sisters. She learned sewing and became a 
milliner. The nickname "COCO" comes from the words of a song she liked to sing: 
who did Coco see in Trocadéro? 
 
 
2‐ La libération de la femme  
Coco chanel raccourcit les jupes et supprime les tailles serrées. 
Elle est la première à proposer des vêtements simples et pratiques pour les 
femmes. Elle lance aussi la mode du jersey et des cheveux courts. Son enfance al 
’orphelinat influence la création de ses vêtements : ils sont stricts, souvent noir et 
blanc, comme l’habit des religieuses. 
 
2‐ The liberation of women 
Coco Chanel shortens the skirts and eliminates tight sizes. 
She is the first to offer simple and practical clothing for women. She also launched 
the fashion for jersey and short hair. His childhood at the orphanage influences 
the creation of his clothes: they are strict, often black and white, like the habit of

3‐ Des vêtements indémodables  
Coco chanel a inventé des habits encore à la mode aujourd'hui: la petite 
robe noir, le tailleur en tween la marinière, les chaussures bicolores, le sac 
matelassée. 
3‐ Timeless clothes 
Coco Chanel invented clothes that are still fashionable today: the little black 
dress, the tween suit, the sailor shirt, two‐tone shoes, the quilted bag. 
 
4‐ Des chapeaux puis la couture  
En 1910, grâce à l'argent de son ami Arthur Capel, chanel ouvre une 
boutique de chapeaux rue Cambon à paris. Rapidement reconnue pour son talent, 
chanel ouvre une autre boutique à Deauville puis à Biarritz en 1914 elle se lance 
alors dans la couture et attire di riches clients. 
4‐ Hats then sewing 
In 1910, thanks to the money of his friend Arthur Capel, Chanel opened a hat 
shop on rue Cambon in Paris. Quickly recognized for her talent, Chanel opened 
another boutique in Deauville and then in Biarritz in 1914, when she started 
sewing and attracted wealthy customers. 
 
5‐ Le parfum No 5 
En 1921, Coco chanel confie la création d’un parfum à Emest Beaux .Il lui 
présente plusieurs essais numérotés de 1 à 5 et d 20 à 24 .Coco chanel choisit le 
no 5 et décide de garder ce nom. C’est aujourd’hui le parfum le plus vendu au 
monde. 
5‐ Perfume No 5 
In 1921, Coco Chanel entrusted the creation of a perfume to Emest Beaux. He 
presented her with several essays numbered from 1 to 5 and from 20 to 24. Coco 
Chanel chose number 5 and decided to keep this name. It’s the best‐selling 
perfume in the world today.
