DESIGN OF SLAB
In ETABS slabs can be designed in two ways, first by strip area method and secondly by FEM method.
In the strip area method, the strips can be drawn in two ways, manual or automatic.
The method used during the design of slab was the strip area method there were strips along y direction and
strips along x direction. and the slab panel is divided into two strips which are edge/end and middle strips.
The automatic method was used to draw the strips.
PROCEDURES
Firstly, the floors to be designed were selected and the meshed slabs were deleted, and new slabs were drawn
or modelled. Loads (dead and live) were assigned to the slabs.
In the drop-down menu of view toolbar set grid visibility option was selected and, on the drop, down menu of
the edit toolbar the assign/edit design strip option was selected and strips along x and along y were generated.
Check for error free model was conducted by running the analysis and setting the load cases to run and
ensuring that no warning message is generated.
In the design toolbar drop down menu the concrete slab design option was selected, and the view/revise
preferences option was opted.
Under the same concrete slab design menu, the floors to be designed were selected by selecting the select
stories to be designed option.
Under the same concrete slab design menu, the load combinations were set to load combination two and then
the start design option was selected.
After the design is complete the flexural design display was selected from the display menu.
Since the flexural design display did not indicate any member that failed then the design was okay, but if it
happens that some members have failed then you must check the material properties used and SI units.
