READING COMPREHENSION TEXT : A LEISURE TRIP
The social sciences teacher often names historic and tourist places. A group of pupils
organized a trip to cibitoke where they could have a look at the two border countries.
One day, my friends Kaze, Keza and I decided to go on a trip to the Ruhwa River at
Cibitoke. The river is the natural border between Burundi and Rwanda in the North-
Western region of Burundi. We agreed to get up early in the morning and meet in
town to hire a taxi. As we were planning our trip, we fortunately met my cousin
Rugero and we told him about our program. As he was interested, we decided to go
together. We got on his jeep and started off at eight o „clock. He was driving at a low
speed to let us contemplate the landscape when five beautiful birds flew away. We
crossed the worderful Imbo plain where we saw large fields of rice.
At Rugombo, Mukiza, who was waiting for us, took us through different places:
banks, schools, factories and the market which offers many kinds of food and fruit.
Cibitoke is an activate business province. We also saw a new lake the Dogodogo that
is getting larger and larger every year. From the Ruhwa river, we were able to see
Rwandan hills and realized that the South-Eastern region of Rwanda, is fertile.
People showed us tombs of German soldiers who were killed in congo but buried in
Burundi after the second world war. What amazed us a lot was the hot springs near
the Ruhwa River. It is said that these kinds of water are miraculous : They cure many

READING TEXT : PROTECTING YOUR MONEY
There are various possibilities for carrying money safely., but let‟s only talk about
three of them : personnal cheques from your country, traveller‟s cheques and credit
cards. It may be more convenient to carry traveller‟s cheques, which are insured
against loss. They should be either in dollars or in Euros, because only a few banks
do much business in foreign currencies. If your cheques aren‟t in dollars, it may take
you a long time to find a bank that will cash them.
In Burundi, most of the banks open either at 7 :30 a.m or 8 :oo a.m from monday to
Friday and close between 5 :30 p.m and 6.00 p.m. Some banks have longer work
hours in order to attract customers. They also open on weekends from 11 :00 a.m to
3 :00 p.m. The cash dispenser works 24 hours a day, it closes neither at night nor on
the week-end.
Credit cards can be cancelled if they are lost or stolen because they are widely
accepted, it is easy to use them to pay for lodging, transportation, meals and things

READING TEXT : OUR HOUSE
We have rather a small house, with one space bedroom. You can imagine our alarm,
then, when Aunt Clara wrote to say that she was coming to stay with her family for
the week-end. Her family, I should explain, consists of four boys, all under the age of
twelve. I sent off a telegram at once, protesting that our house was too small. Aunt
Clara called us up the next morning. » I forgot to explain, » She said in her sweetest
voice, « the boys will be bringing a couple of tents ». Even so, my wife was far from
reassured. It was true we had a large garden, but there was still the problem of
feeding four growing boys. « And what if it rains ? » She demanded. But, Saturday
morning turned to be bright and clear when I went to the station to meet Aunt Clara. I
managed to squeeze three of the boys, together with the luggage, into the back of
the car. The youngest sat in front, with Aunt Clara and me. » I didn‟t see the tents
among your luggage, » I remarked over my shoulder, to David, the eldest boy.«The
tents ! » explained Aunt Clara. « Heavens ! we left them in the luggage Van »

READING TEXT: AN INTELLIGENT PARROT
A parrot named Chiku was staying on a mango tree. Chiku was an intelligent bind.
He had a sweet voice and a natural gift of imitating the voice of many things such as
crying like a child, coughing like a person, barking like a dog, etc. Whoever passed
near that mango tree was pleased to hear him singing.
One day, as he was very thirsty, he flew around to search for water, but could not find
it anywhere. He got very tired. While he was sitting on a tree, he saw a pot of water
under the tree and became very pleased. To his disappointment, he found that the
level of the water was very low and the neck of the pot was very narrow.
Unfortunately, his beak could not reach the level of the water. While sitting on the
neck of the pot, he saw small stones near the pot. He started picking them up one by
one and dropping them into the pot. The water started rising and reached a very high
level. Then, Chiku enjoyed drinking water and was happy to save his life.

One‟s upon a time, a giraffe and a fox lived together in a park. They were good
friends. One day, when the fox was walking, he saw ripe bananas in the farm on the
other side of the stream.
As the stream was deep, it was not possible for him to cross. He told the giraffe and
this one agreed to take him on his back. After crossing the stream, the giraffe and the
fox entered the farm and started eating the bananas.
While the giraffe was eating, the fox told him, « It is my habit to sing after having my
lunch ». The giraffe said to him, « Don‟t sing now. Let me finish my lunch ». But the
fox did not listen to him and started to sing.
Hearing this, the farmer came running with a stick. Seeing the man over with a stick,
the fox ran out of the farm through a hole in the fence, and waited for the giraffe near
the stream. The farmer started beating the giraffe until he broke the stick. The giraffe
ran out of the farm, near the place where the fox was waiting for him. The latter sat
on his friend‟s back to cross the stream. When they arrive in the middle of the stream,
the giraffe said : « I always take a bath after having my lunch. » The fox replied :

We have rather a small house, with only one spare bedroom. You can imagine our
alarm, then, when Aunt Clara wrote to say that she was coming to stay with her
family for the weekend. Her family, I should explain, consists of four boys all under
the age of twelve. I sent off a telegram at once, protesting that our house was too
small.
Aunt Clara called us up the next morning : « I forgot to explain», she said in her
sweetest voice, « the boys will be bringing a couple of tents. » Even so, my wife was
far from reassured. It was true we had a large garden, but there was still the problem
of feeding for growing boys. « And what if it trains ?» She demanded ?
But Saturday morning turned to be bright and clear when I went to the station to meet
Aunt Clara. I managed to squeeze three of the boys ,together with the luggage, into
the back of the car. The yougest sat in the front, with Aunt Clara and me. «I didn‟t see
the tents among your laggage ». I remarked over my shoulder, to David, the eldest
boy. «The tents !» exclaimed Aunt Clara. «Hevens ! we left them in the luggage

READING COMPREHENSION TEXT: BUTTERFLIES

The butterfly is an insect which is the nicest of all in the world. There are many
kinds of butterflies in this country, some large and some small, but have lovely
colours. Every day, especially after rain, you will see them flying here and
there flowers by flowers.

If you look at the butterfly, you will see that his body is in three parts : the
head, the thorax and the abdomen. His head has two eyes, one on each side.
These eyes are extremely wonderful. If you were able to see them from very
close, you would be able to see that each eye is not really one eye, like that of
a person, but is really made of many small eyes, about one thousand seven
hundred altogether.

So this insect is able to see in front and back at one time. A person must turn
his head if he wants to see behind him, but the butterfly can see on all sides
without turning the head.

Its wings have many colours which help to hide so that it can not be seen by
other insects or birds which would want to eat it.

READING COMPREHENSION TEXT: AN INTELLIGENT PARROT

A parrot named Chiku was staying on a mango tree. Chiku was an intelligent bird. He
had a sweet voice and a natural gift of imitating the voice of many things such as
crying like a child, coughing like a person, barking like a dog, etc. Whoever passed
near that mango tree was pleased to hear him singing.

One day, as he was very thirsty, he flew around to search for water but could not find
it anywhere. He got very tired. While he was sitting on a tree, he saw a pot of water
under the tree and became very pleased. To his disappointment, he found that the
level of the water was very low and the neck of the pot was very narrow.
Unfortunately, his beak couldn‟t reach the level of the water.

While sitting on the neck of the pot, he saw small stones near the pot. He started
picking them up one by one and dropping them into the pot. The water started rising

READING COMPREHENSION TEXT : DOGS HAVE FEELINGS, TOO

Dogs, just like people, have feelings and often show their feelings with their facial
expressions and body language. Most people can read emotions in their dogs quite
easily. Dogs can show us if they are happy, frightened, excited, thirsty, angry or ill.
For example, you come home and your dog dances around you, wagging its tail.
Immediately, you conclude that your dog is happy to see you or it really loves you.
A frightened dog lowers or lets descend its head, tucks its tail between its legs and
crouches low to the ground.
An angry dog holds its tail, body and head in a straight line with its ears pointed to its
head to show that it is ready to attack.
A thirsty dog pants , to mean that it breathes with short, quick breaths ;and hangs its
tongue out. Sometimes it lays on the ground on its side.
When a dog is ill, it lays down many times, moves slowly and refuses to eat or drink.

READING COMPREHENSION TEXT : WATER
We all need water. But we sometimes have problems with it. When it rains a lot, the
level of the rivers rises and the water runs over the banks. People drown, their cars
and houses are ruined, animals drown, too and many places often have floods.
When it doesn‟t rain for a long time, other kinds of problems happen: some
provinces suffer from droughts, plants and animals die and people have no food.
Rare industries that exist in our country pollute water from the Tanganyika Lake with
chemicals. They use too many chemicals that enter the lake and kill plants and fish.

READING COMPREHESION TEXT: AN EARLY AFRICAN CIVILIZATION

An important discovery was made in Zambia. It was made by some historians. More
than 10000 years ago, there was a great civilization near modern Lusaka. People
wore gold ornaments. They lived near the Zambezi. The place was called the
Ingombe Ilede. Ingombe Ilede is thirty miles from the Kariba Dam..
When historians dug the place, they found gold and copper ornaments. The chief of
Ingombe Ilede were buried with their possessions. We do not know much about
Ingombe Ilede. Its people were Africans. There is no doubt about that. They hunted
elephants, buffaloes, zebras and antilopes The bones of these animals have been
found there. They also kept cattle, goats and dogs. There is, however, one thing we
do not know. Where did they get copper and gold from? The copper and gold might
have come from Congo.
The people of Ingombe Ilede also imported cloth. They imported cloth from the coast.
Different types of cloth which their woman used have been found under the ground.
