READING COMPREHENSION TEXT : A LEISURE TRIP
The social sciences teacher often names historic and tourist places. A group of pupils
organized a trip to cibitoke where they could have a look at the two border countries.
One day, my friends Kaze, Keza and I decided to go on a trip to the Ruhwa River at
Cibitoke. The river is the natural border between Burundi and Rwanda in the North-
Western region of Burundi. We agreed to get up early in the morning and meet in
town to hire a taxi. As we were planning our trip, we fortunately met my cousin
Rugero and we told him about our program. As he was interested, we decided to go
together. We got on his jeep and started off at eight o „clock. He was driving at a low
speed to let us contemplate the landscape when five beautiful birds flew away. We
crossed the worderful Imbo plain where we saw large fields of rice.
At Rugombo, Mukiza, who was waiting for us, took us through different places:
banks, schools, factories and the market which offers many kinds of food and fruit.
Cibitoke is an activate business province. We also saw a new lake the Dogodogo that
is getting larger and larger every year. From the Ruhwa river, we were able to see
Rwandan hills and realized that the South-Eastern region of Rwanda, is fertile.
People showed us tombs of German soldiers who were killed in congo but buried in
Burundi after the second world war. What amazed us a lot was the hot springs near
the Ruhwa River. It is said that these kinds of water are miraculous : They cure many
diseases.

buy school materials. They do everything they can for the happiness and health of
the family.
He thanked his wife and promised to change his behaviour. One year later, Karenzo

READING TEXT : PROTECTING YOUR MONEY
There are various possibilities for carrying money safely., but let‟s only talk about
three of them : personnal cheques from your country, traveller‟s cheques and credit
cards. It may be more convenient to carry traveller‟s cheques, which are insured
against loss. They should be either in dollars or in Euros, because only a few banks
do much business in foreign currencies. If your cheques aren‟t in dollars, it may take
you a long time to find a bank that will cash them.
In Burundi, most of the banks open either at 7 :30 a.m or 8 :oo a.m from monday to
Friday and close between 5 :30 p.m and 6.00 p.m. Some banks have longer work
hours in order to attract customers. They also open on weekends from 11 :00 a.m to
3 :00 p.m. The cash dispenser works 24 hours a day, it closes neither at night nor on
the week-end.
Credit cards can be cancelled if they are lost or stolen because they are widely
accepted, it is easy to use them to pay for lodging, transportation, meals and things
you want to buy from larger stores. Of course you can‟t get along without cash, but
you don‟t need to curry much with you.

READING COMPREHENSION TEXT : A SMALL HOUSE
We have rather a small house, with only one spare bedroom. You can imagine our
alarm, then, when Aunt Clara wrote to say that she was coming to stay with her
family for the weekend. Her family, I should explain, consists of four boys all under
the age of twelve. I sent off a telegram at once, protesting that our house was too
small.
Aunt Clara called us up the next morning : « I forgot to explain», she said in her
sweetest voice, « the boys will be bringing a couple of tents. » Even so, my wife was
far from reassured. It was true we had a large garden, but there was still the problem
of feeding for growing boys. « And what if it trains ?» She demanded ?
But Saturday morning turned to be bright and clear when I went to the station to meet
Aunt Clara. I managed to squeeze three of the boys ,together with the luggage, into
the back of the car. The yougest sat in the front, with Aunt Clara and me. «I didn‟t see
the tents among your laggage ». I remarked over my shoulder, to David, the eldest
boy. «The tents !» exclaimed Aunt Clara. «Hevens ! we left them in the luggage
van ».

The butterfly is an insect which is the nicest of all in the world. There are many
kinds of butterflies in this country, some large and some small, but have lovely
colours. Every day, especially after rain, you will see them flying here and
there flowers by flowers.
If you look at the butterfly, you will see that his body is in three parts : the
head, the thorax and the abdomen. His head has two eyes, one on each side.
These eyes are extremely wonderful. If you were able to see them from very
close, you would be able to see that each eye is not really one eye, like that of
a person, but is really made of many small eyes, about one thousand seven
hundred altogether.
So this insect is able to see in front and back at one time. A person must turn
his head if he wants to see behind him, but the butterfly can see on all sides
without turning the head.
Its wings have many colours which help to hide so that it can not be seen by
other insects or birds which would want to eat it.

Karenzo‟s wife tried to show her husband how Mahoro and his wife became
successful thanks to their cooperation : they pay their children‟s school fees, feed
them well, buy school materials for them … They do everything they can for the
happines and health of the family. He thanked his wife and promised to change his
behaviour.
Last year, Karenzo and his wife got a loan from TWITEZIMBERE project. The money

A parrot named Chiku was staying on a mango tree. Chiku was an intelligent bird. He
had a sweet voice and a natural gift of imitating the voice of many things such as
crying like a child, coughing like a person, barking like a dog, etc. Whoever passed
near that mango tree was pleased to hear him singing.
One day, as he was very thirsty, he flew around to search for water but could not find
it anywhere. He got very tired. While he was sitting on a tree, he saw a pot of water
under the tree and became very pleased. To his disappointment, he found that the
level of the water was very low and the neck of the pot was very narrow.
Unfortunately, his beak couldn‟t reach the level of the water.
While sitting on the neck of the pot, he saw small stones near the pot. He started
picking them up one by one and dropping them into the pot. The water started rising
and reached a very high level. Then, Chiku enjoys drinking the water and was happy
to save his life.
This story teaches that people should not be discouraged in a difficult situation but
must find how to overcome it.

READING COMPREHENSION : THE PET STORE
George is at the pet store, looking at what kind of pet he might want to get for his
birthday. George asked if he could have a horse, but his parents said no because
horses are too big. First, he sees dogs and cats. Baby dogs are called puppies. Baby
cats are called Kittens. George likes them because they are easy to take care of and
can play a lot, but they will get bigger. George wants a small pet.
Then, Georges sees animals that have to live in a cage. He sees rabbit, guinea pigs,
and mice. Mice are what you call more than one mouse. He likes these animals
because they are small. Birds live in cages, too. George sees a parrot and a canary.
156
He likes them all, but, he doesn‟t want to clean the cage. George sees the animals in
tanks. The tanks full of water, have fish and turtles in them.
He thniks about a goldfish, but decides he likes the turtles more. There are also tanks
with rocks and sand that have snakes, spiders and scorpions, but Georges is afraid
of them. George likes the turtles, best, but, they will not fit in the little fishbowls.
Turtles need bigger tanks, so they can suim sometimes and hide sometimes.
