How to hold the double-Bass.

The pupil should be erect, the leg. a trifle open, in such a way fhat the angle formed by the back and the upper spilt of the double-bass (on the 'ide of the 4th string) lean. on hi. left side, and that the: angle of the under split (011 the side of the 4~h string) touche. the left kneepan. The left hand should be placed on the head of the neck and hold it between the thumb and the other fingers, Sf) that these fingers are separ a t ed from one another and

(I·t .lring) and the 4·h on the B , ft$© , the hand is tltu a in the 1" position (I" degree). The fore-arm should descend nearly parallel vith the neck of the instrument, in order to avoid holding the elbow up and outwards. As it is impossible to hold the double-bass quite vertically, the pupil should incline it a little to himself.

How to hold and guide the Bow.

The bow is held in the right hand, so that the right side of the thumb i5 placed on the groove of the nut. 'Pile ring-finger au t the little finger should move nearer the middlt'-fill;.{er to twill the stick: the forefinger alone is lightly separated from the other fingers.

The bow should be placed horiz on t ally on the strings, at a distance of 3 inches trom the bridge, and inclined towards the fingerhoard; the nearer it draws to the bridge, the s tr onger gets

the sound. The fore-arm and the wrist guide the bow parallel with the bridge, which is essential to obtain a fine sonority.

The wrist rounded over tile st ri ngs, with a down-bow at the heel-end, g e ts str aigh ter as the bow Is drawn, and should Ior.u a straight line with the other parts of the arm. when the bow is at the point. With an up-bow, it is the reverse direction, and t h c wrist should come back to its original position. The mo veme n t s of the shoulder and the arm give bad results and the pupil sh uuld rigortlllsly avoid turning: the elbow outwards.

Attacking the strings "With the Bow.

To obtain a good attack, it is always necessary to weigh the bow down on the string wi t h the forefinger, before drawing the bow down or up, in order to make the note tell distinctly.

The inobservance of this principle is the great es t defect. It leads, because of the per pet uel rubbing of the how, to a confused performance, in which the sound at the notes is not perceived.

There is too the reverse defect, which consists in attacking loudly the note indicated r during its whole length and let the sound drop abruptly after the attack. Tbis defect becomes (exceptionally) a quality, when a note is indicated [p,
