Abstract: The Finite Difference Time Domain Method is a numerical method based on the discretization of Maxwell equations in time and space domains. This method is often used for electromagnetic radiation problems (electromagnetic compatibility, mines detection, antennas), for analyzing the electromagnetic absorption in human tissues, for designing microwave circuits, and also in optics. The principal advantages of this method are the robustness of the algorithm, a simple concept, and the possibility to obtain frequency domain results in a wideband by using the time domain results. The objective of this course is to get familiarized with the fundamentals of the method: finite difference, Yee algorithm, numerical dispersion, stability, boundaries conditions, PML, thin wire formalism, far field calculation. At the end of the presentation, a mini-project will be given, where an FDTD code will be developed for a simple problem. Halim Boutayeb received the "Diplme dIngnieur" (B.Sc. degree) in signal processing and telecommunication from the Institut de Formation Suprieure en Informatique et Communication (IFSIC) Rennes, France, in 2000 and the French D.E.A. (M.Sc. degree) and Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Rennes, France, in June 2000 and December 2003, respectively. From March 2004 to December 2006, he was with INRS-EMT, Montreal, QC, Canada. Since January 2007, he has been a Researcher at cole Polytechnique de Montreal, QC, Canada. He has been also a member and the executive coordinator of the research center CREER which groups 34 professors/researchers of Quebec in electromagnetism and RF technologies. His main fields of interest are electromagnetic bandgap structures, FDTD method, antennas, microwaves circuits, radars, local positioning systems, and phased-arrays.
