Le Futur

The Future Tense is used to express an event or describe a condition

that will take place in the future.  

Je partirai à 8
ex : I shall leave at 8 a.m.
heures.
She will be singing. Elle chantera.
They will do it. Ils le feront.
Tu le verras lorsqu’il
You will see him when he arrives.
arrivera.
Nous
We will start as soon as you come. commencerons dès
que vous arriverez.
There will be many people at the Il y aura du monde au
stadium. stade.

In English, the future tense is represented by the verb shall/will +

another verb :
example : shall leave, will be singing, will do, etc…

In French, you take the main verb (example : leave, sing, do …) and change it to the
future form. (refer to the formation below) ÷

Formation du verbe au futur simple  :

 (i)  For all the verbs ending in ‘-r’, take the infinitive form of the verb
and add the future          endings: ai, as, a, ons, ez, ont

 Example:

  arriver finir
Je ______ ai J’arriverai Je finirai
Tu ______ as Tu arriveras Tu finiras
Il/Elle/On  ______ a Il arrivera Il finira
Nous ______ ons Nous Nous finirons
Vous ______ ez arriverons Vous finirez
Ils/Elles ______ ont Vous Ils finiront

Ils arriveront

 (ii)     For verbs ending in ‘-re’, the final e is dropped before adding
the future endings : Example :  
 Infinitif : le futur :
attendre è attendr_ J’attendrai
prendre prendr_ Tu attendras
écrire écrir_ Il attendra
lire lir Nous attendrons
mettre mettr_ Vous attendrez
Ils attendront

 (iii)      Irregular forms :

            Attention:   falloir:      Il faudra

                            pleuvoir:  Il pleuvra                

  (iv)   Verbs which have ‘_è_’ or ‘_ll_’ in the present tense as in

j’achète and j’appelle, etc, will retain the ‘è’ or double
consonants in the future tense form.

j’achèterai je me promènerai j’appellerai je jetterai
tu achèteras tu te promèneras tu appelleras tu jetteras
il achètera il se promènera il appellera il jettera
