The previous editions of this publication emphasized the responsibility of Lcole de design
Nantes Atlantique in the placement and follow-up of its graduates. It is no longer enough
to have creative students churning out high-quality degree projects to prove the quality
of a teaching establishment. Today it is about assessing the quality of the jobs they find after
graduation. If by any chance graduates were not fit for the profession of designer,
then the school would have failed in its mission.

Il ne suffit plus davoir des tudiants cratifs dont on aurait lou la qualit du projet
de diplme pour prouver la qualit dun tablissement. Il sagit de mesurer la qualit
des emplois trouvs lissue de la formation. Si daventure les diplms ntaient pas
aptes la profession de designer, alors lcole aurait irrmdiablement failli.

The aim of professionalizing courses offered by the Lcole de design has led us
to evaluate the design professions and how they have evolved. New responsibilities are being
entrusted to designers: sharing ideas, working with others, facilitating exchange,
but also bringing together, uniting and winning over all those involved in the projects.
Design has become a management discipline and designers have become exceptional leaders
expected to drive change.

Cet objectif de professionnalisation des formations de Lcole de design


nous a conduits nous interroger sur les mtiers du design et notamment leur volution.
De nouvelles responsabilits sont confies au designer: celles de partager les ides,
de travailler avec les autres, danimer des sances dchanges, mais aussi de rassembler,
de fdrer et de faire adhrer lensemble des personnes impliques dans les projets.
Le design est devenu discipline de management et le designer, ce leader remarquable
dont on attend quil conduise le changement.

The 19th and 20th centuries saw the prominence of engineers then of marketing and finance
personnel in driving businesses forward. The 21st century could well be the age of designers,
at a time when it is necessary to modify the rules governing the organization of structures
to unleash creativity and devise new styles of company organization to keep up with the times.
The 21st century will be the age of designers, provided they are ready to assume these
new responsibilities, and in particular this leadership of transdisciplinary teams whose goal
will be to imagine and create tomorrows world.

Les 19e et 20e sicles ont vu la prminence des ingnieurs puis du marketing
et de la finance pour conduire les entreprises. Il se pourrait que le 21e sicle soit celui
des designers, au moment o il sagit de modifier les rgles dorganisation des structures
pour librer la crativit et inventer des organisations propres sadapter sans cesse.
Le 21e sicle sera celui des designers, sils sont prts par ailleurs assumer de nouvelles
responsabilits, et notamment ce leadership dquipes transdisciplinaires dont lobjectif
sera dimaginer et de crer ce que peut tre demain.

It will be their century provided that designers do not just have ideas that someone else
goes on to develop they must become entrepreneurs of their own ideas. What the world
really needs is not so much design thinkers as design doers: the builders of tomorrow
who are aware of their responsibility as entrepreneurs.

Il le sera si les designers ne se contentent pas davoir des ides pour les laisser
dvelopper par dautres mais deviennent entrepreneurs de celles-ci. Ce nest pas
tant de design thinkers dont le monde a besoin, mais plutt de design doers,
des btisseurs de demain conscients de leur responsabilit entreprendre.

of Impacts which bears witness to the quality of the work done in this school and of which
the staff, particularly the teachers, can be proud of. Together, stone by stone, we build

For David, who designs interactive projects


at the Passion for Innovation Institute, sparking
peoples imagination and fulfilling dreams
are his catchwords. This department puts
the technology used in Dassault Systmes
at the service of research, education and artistic
creation. One of a wide variety of programs,
David designed the Martin Solveig Music Game
at Futuroscope. This game turns the queue
for the attraction Dance with Robots into a collective
and interactive experience.
Even though the programs developed are highly
technological, David always strives to put people
at the center of the project.
Despite the time spent doing administrative
and legal tasks, confides the designer who works
on tangible and perceptible digital objects,
I get the chance to meet outstanding artists
and work in prestigious locations.
As a student, David made a name for himself
by winning three prizes at Laval Virtual,
the international festival of virtual reality.

sont les devises de David qui conoit des projets
interactifs linstitut Passion for Innovation.
Ce dpartement met la technologie de lentreprise
Dassault Systmes au service de la recherche,
de lducation et de la cration artistique.
Parmi une grande diversit de programmes,
David a conu le Jeu Musical Martin Solveig,
au Futuroscope. Ce jeu transforme la file dattente
de lattraction Danse avec les Robots en une exprience
collective et interactive.
Mme si les programmes dvelopps sont hautement
technologiques, David sattache toujours placer
lhumain au cur du projet .
Malgr le temps pass aux tches administratives
et lgales , confie le designer qui travaille
sur des objets numriques tangibles et sensibles,
jai la chance de rencontrer des artistes exceptionnels
et dinvestir des lieux prestigieux.
tudiant, David sest illustr en recevant trois prix
lors du festival international de ralit virtuelle
Laval Virtual.

On her business card is written happiD Design,


for practical design. And when Sarah presents
her projects, she takes pride in adopting a global
approach to design. Design should be grounded in
the real world and accessible to all explains Sarah,
freelance designer since 2008. It is exactly this kind
of cross-disciplinary approach to design combining
space, product and services which she has just
put into practice in a joint project for a nursing home
in Paris for the Humanis group.
Special attention has been given to the functionality
of the place bearing in mind the residents sensory
disabilities. To help people find their way in the
building and its surroundings, Sarah has named each
living unit after a district of Belleville past or present.
This global approach thus gives a real identity
to a brand new building and improves the quality
of life for the residents and staff.
Designers are creative people with their feet firmly
on the ground, says the young designer enthusiastically.
In the future she wants to make everyday constraints
more enjoyable, but she also aspires to live in a more
people-centered society.

Sur sa carte de visite, on peut lire happiD Design,


pour un design concret . Et lorsque Sarah prsente
ses projets, elle revendique une approche globale
du design. Le design doit tre ancr dans le rel
et accessible tous explique Sarah, designer
indpendante depuis 2008. Cest dans cette approche
transversale du design qui relie espace, produit
et services quelle vient de collaborer la cration
dun EHPAD* Paris la demande du groupe Humanis.
Une attention particulire a t porte la fonctionnalit
du lieu au regard des dficiences sensorielles
des rsidents. Afin de se reprer plus facilement dans
ltablissement et lextrieur, Sarah a attribu
chaque unit de vie des noms qui voquent le quartier
de Belleville pass et prsent. Cette approche globale
donne ainsi une vritable identit un btiment
flambant neuf et amliore le quotidien des rsidents
et du personnel.
Le designer est un cratif ayant les pieds sur terre ,
affirme la jeune designer enthousiaste. lavenir,
elle souhaite rendre plus agrable ce qui nous
contraint au quotidien , mais aspire aussi vivre
dans une socit plus ouverte sur lhumain .

In mass-market retailing, creation happens because


of constraints, announce Damien, lise and Arthur,
designers at Kingfisher (the parent company
of Castorama), and its a real challenge! The economic
impact is really important, so the design has to be
adapted to the price and not the other way round
as this factor is critical and inflexible, explain
the trio who freely describe themselves as very
pragmatic designers.
It is with this in mind that they designed a complete
range of cutting tools and a lawnmower ready to use
in ten seconds. Putting yourself in the users shoes
is a recurring principle for the three colleagues
who work with a large variety of products from
paintbrushes to barbecues.
Most days, they acknowledge having to explain
their profession before their project as for many
people, design is still synonymous with contemporary
decoration. They find it a shame having to constantly
educate people to explain what the design process
really is. The three friends, who all have a healthy dose
of self-mockery, share the same taste for simple objects
without unnecessary detail. In the coming years
they hope to keep this passion which binds them
to their profession and to carry on making products
that are even smarter!

Dans la grande distribution, on cre grce


aux contraintes lancent Damien, lise et Arthur,
designers chez Kingfisher (dont dpend Castorama),
et cest un vrai challenge ! Les impacts conomiques
sont trs importants, aussi le design doit sadapter
au prix et non linverse car cet lment est
dterminant et incompressible explique le trio
qui nhsite pas se dfinir comme des designers
trs pragmatiques .
Cest dans cette dmarche quils ont conu
une gamme complte doutils de taillanderie
et une tondeuse prte en dix secondes .
Se mettre dans la peau de lutilisateur est un principe
rcurrent pour les trois collgues qui interviennent
sur une grande diversit de produits qui va du pinceau
au barbecue.
Ils reconnaissent au quotidien devoir expliquer leur
mtier avant leur projet car le design incarne encore
pour beaucoup la dco contemporaine . Ils regrettent
de devoir souvent faire de la pdagogie pour
expliquer ce quest vraiment le processus du design .
Aussi, les trois complices qui ne manquent pas
dautodrision, partagent le got des objets sobres
sans dtail superflu. Ils esprent dans les annes
venir garder cette passion qui les relie leur mtier
et continuer rendre les produits plus malins !

We want to create a brand which reflects


the new trends in catering: creative and uninhibited,
explain co-founders of Dinettes, Benjamin Charles
and Simon Joyau. Together, the two designers
develop and produce mobile workstations
for professionals in nomad, event and
commercial catering.
The Dinettes story is a series of professional
opportunities which began with winning a prize
in the competition Mini Maousse 5, ma cantine
en ville. Since this distinction received with
Thibault Vallet, and in light of the current enthusiasm
for these emerging food trends, Benjamin
and Simon have been contacted by many clients.
We want to position ourselves as leaders in this
rapidly expanding niche market, they explain,
by offering a bold, creative and diversified vision
of cuisine.
The idea is to incorporate the discipline of traditional
cuisine and its norms into an elegant and modular
product, add the duo, who dream of working
for the greatest figures in the restaurant business
in the coming years.

Nous voulons crer une marque qui soit limage


des nouveaux modes de restauration : cratifs
et dcomplexs affirment Benjamin Charles et Simon
Joyau, cofondateurs de Dinettes. Ensemble, les deux
designers conoivent et fabriquent des structures mobiles
pour les professionnels de la restauration nomade,
vnementielle et commerciale.
Lpope de Dinettes est une suite dopportunits
professionnelles qui a commenc avec le prix
du concours Mini Maousse 5, ma cantine en ville .
Depuis cette distinction, obtenue en collaboration
avec Thibault Vallet, et devant lenthousiasme
que suscitent ces modes alimentaires mergents,
Benjamin et Simon ont t sollicits par de nombreux
clients. Nous souhaitons nous placer comme
des rfrents dans ce march de niche en pleine explosion
expliquent-ils en proposant une vision audacieuse,
crative et diversifie de la cuisine.
Lide est dintgrer la rigueur de la cuisine traditionnelle
et de ses normes un produit lgant et modulaire
dveloppe le duo qui rve dans les prochaines
annes de travailler pour les plus grands noms
de la restauration .

was already collecting packaging at the age of 12.
Today she is a freelance artistic director specialized
in Branding and Packaging, and still has the same
passion for volumes and graphic design but she
has also developed a taste for strategy. Defining
the brand identity, choosing the angles of attack
and analyzing the competition are strategic issues
which Claire takes on every day. You always
have to look in different directions, she explains,
question your way of doing things: curiosity
helps you define new universes.
Called on by the agency Extrme Paris, she won
the campaign to reposition the Pampryl brand
and went on to redesign a new identity
and new packaging for the company. Packaging
has to adapt to changing consumer habits
and incorporate major ecological issues,
claims Claire, who systematically offers
her clients solutions that are consistent with
sustainable development.
Claire is thinking about one day becoming
a headhunter to ensure the optimal match between
teams and projects. The perfect way to put
her expertise in strategy to work for agencies.

analyser la concurrence sont des enjeux stratgiques
dont Claire sempare au quotidien. Il faut toujours
regarder ailleurs, explique-t-elle, se remettre
en question, cest la curiosit qui amne dfinir
de nouveaux univers .
Sollicite par lagence Extrme Paris, elle a remport
la campagne de repositionnement de la marque
Pampryl pour qui elle a imagin une nouvelle
identit et un nouveau packaging. Le packaging
doit sadapter aux changements de consommation
et sinscrire dans les grandes problmatiques
cologiques dfend Claire qui propose systmatiquement
ses clients des options qui vont dans le sens
du dveloppement durable.
Claire songe se reconvertir un jour en chasseur de ttes
afin doptimiser ladquation entre les quipes
et les projets . Une belle faon de mettre son expertise
de la stratgie au service des agences.

As soon as she graduated, Galle got a job


as designer in the R&D department at Dorel,
specialists in childcare products.
She has just developed the electric breast pump
Natural Comfort. A handy product which lets mothers
express their breast milk easily and discreetly.
I try to design products which make life easier
for young parents, explains Galle, who devotes
a lot of her time to managing projects. You need
to know exactly what you want to do and be extremely
persuasive to get people to follow you, especially
with innovative projects, admits Galle.
Enthusiastic and determined, she has successfully
established herself as a specialist in textile design.
Im lucky as I get to work on a wide variety
of products at Dorel, she enthuses. To fuel
her creativity, she constantly monitors trends
and developments on childcare blogs and trade
fairs. She also gets plenty of inspiration from
daily life with her little girl.
Galle has a BTS (2-year advanced vocational
diploma) in industrial creation and a Masters degree
in design, and her advice to future designers
is to stand out from the crowd and really master
the technical side in order to be taken seriously!

spcialiste des produits de puriculture.
Elle vient de dvelopper le tire-lait lectrique
Natural Comfort. Un produit pratique qui permet
de recueillir le lait maternel en toute discrtion.
Jessaye de concevoir des produits qui facilitent
la vie des jeunes parents explique Galle
qui consacre beaucoup de son temps la gestion
de projets. Il faut savoir o lon veut aller
et tre extrmement convaincant pour que les gens
nous suivent surtout sur des projets innovants
reconnat Galle.
Enthousiaste et dtermine, elle a dailleurs russi
simposer comme une spcialiste du design textile.
Jai de la chance car jexplore une grande diversit
de produits chez Dorel se rjouit-elle. Et pour nourrir
sa crativit, elle est en veille constante sur les blogs
et les salons professionnels. Elle sinspire aussi beaucoup
de son quotidien avec sa petite fille.
Titulaire dun BTS Assistant cration industrielle
et dun Diplme de design bac+5, Galle conseille
aux futurs designers de se dmarquer des autres
et de bien matriser la technique pour gagner
en crdibilit !

Finding contortionist models, doing a fashion shoot


for a luxury brand, designing new packaging:
the tasks entrusted by Malherbe Design Agency
to Adrien, artistic director, are so varied it is difficult
to describe them. I try to find new stories to tell
in pictures, explains this jack-of-all-trades designer.
With the agencys artistic team, he designed a surreal
living room for the AD Intrieurs exhibition. It was
exciting to have carte blanche as it meant taking
a cross-functional approach to the management
of the project, explains Adrien, and I had to approach
some pretty incredible craftsmen as well as performers
and contemporary dancers.
Design is a way of making sense of the world,
says Adrien, regardless of the type of product.
He remembers a project on gravestones which
introduced him to some original funeral rites.
You cant have preconceived ideas as the design
process is the same for a tombstone as it is for
a luxury product, muses Adrien, who also made
a name for himself during his studies, with his flat
wine bottle project.

assez incroyables mais aussi des performeurs
et des danseurs contemporains .
Le design est une faon de sapproprier le monde,
estime Adrien, quimporte lunivers du produit .
Il se souvient dailleurs dun projet dtude de pierre tombale
qui lui avait fait dcouvrir des rites funraires indits.
Il ne faut pas avoir de prjugs car entre une pierre
tombale et un produit de luxe, la dmarche du design
est la mme samuse Adrien, qui sest aussi illustr
en formation, avec un projet de bouteille de vin plate.

The question of data confidentiality on the Internet


has become an explosive one. Global surveillance
by internet mammoths and states is pushing users
to protect the security of their communications
and online searches as much as possible, explains
Jessica who specializes in online security and identity
issues at AVG Technologies.
The Burnrchat project led by Jessica and her team
with the Privacy & Identity Lab (University of Radboud)
looks at the issues of secure communication.
Weve studied existing solutions which make it possible
to encrypt the sending of images and messages,
describes Jessica, and highlighted the sticking points.
The majority of difficulties stem from cryptographic key
exchange. The application which she has created
facilitates this exchange between two smartphones
without the user needing to know the underlying rules
of cryptography.
Interaction design helps us make complex technology
simple and improve user experience, particularly
with regard to social issues such as privacy,
reassures Jessica, who sees herself as lead designer
in a few years time.

La majorit des difficults rside dans lchange de cls
cryptographiques . Lutilisation de lapplication quelle
a cre facilite cet change entre deux smartphones
sans que lutilisateur ait besoin de connatre les rgles
de la cryptographie sous-jacentes.
Par le design dinteraction, on peut simplifier
les technologies complexes et amliorer lexprience
utilisateur notamment sur des sujets de socit tels que
le respect de la vie prive assure Jessica, qui simagine
dans quelques annes comme lead designer.

Setting up your own company means having


freedom, say Jehane El Zein and Morgane Leonard.
After a successful experience at LOral Luxe
and Chanel, they set up their own agency Leonard
El Zein, specialized in product and spatial design.
For the past three years, the two young professionals
who combine determination, sensitivity and elegance,
have worked in a multitude of fields.
We share the same taste for purity and for simple,
minimalist things, explain the duo. This is the spirit
that characterized their creation of jewelry displays
for the jewelry brand Esther Vina 1950 . Inspired by
snakes, the emblem of the brand, they designed
graphic yet discreet stands in different sizes.
We try to find the formula which fulfills our clients
brief, while bringing a touch of poetry, confide
the well-suited designers.
For the years to come, we want to continue
working on meaningful projects we are passionate

bijoux pour la marque de joaillerie Esther Vina 1950.
Inspires par le serpent, emblme de la marque,
elles ont imagin des perchoirs graphiques et discrets

la recette qui viendra satisfaire le cahier des charges
de nos clients, en apportant de la posie confient

How to transform cooking from a chore into


a pleasure this is the challenge faced by Amina,
UX designer at af83 agency. Her interface project
for SEB group explores new ways of cooking
and supplies. This service offers users a boost
to their well-being and everyday life through
the use of a connected ecosystem, explains Amina,
passionate about her profession.
Amina has become a specialist in user experience
design, a rapidly-growing sector in companies.
The young designer already had a promise
of employment in Germany before she had completed

reckons Bryony, senior designer at Steelcase,
world leader in office furniture. You always need
to see the big picture but have an eye for detail.
Bryony applies this methodology everyday while
designing her projects. Work modes have changed
drastically in companies, she notes. In response
to this, she redesigned a range of modular products
launched ten years ago by incorporating new
management issues. Encouraging teamwork, boosting
well-being, creating a new working atmosphere

as it really makes you think about the complexity

Hong-Kong is a city that lives at 100 miles per hour;


its futuristic side is a real source of inspiration,
describe Frantz Lasorne and Nicolas Guyon,
co-founders of the agency Visionaries 777 Ltd.,
specialized in interaction design. Fascinated
by Kavinsky, the artist behind the famous film Drive,
they designed the Kavinsky Game. This video game
which combines music, car chases and martial
arts fightings has currently been downloaded nearly
500 000 times.
During their studies, the idea of working together
soon became a no-brainer. After a successful
experience at Lego in Denmark, a dream job,
they decided to explore Asia. It was a gamble
but they made a success of it. Since then, they have
been selling innovative interaction concepts.
As long as there is a relationship between a human
and a machine, anything can be interaction! they
explain. And technology is still opening new doors
for us, they add. But you have to be constantly
aware of new technology as things move really fast.
Although they dont want to cut any corners,
Frantz and Nicolas see themselves one day heading
to the United States.

car tout va trs vite .
Mme sils ne veulent pas brler les tapes,
Frantz et Nicolas imaginent un jour se dployer

As a boy, Arthur used to build model airplanes


with his father. This painstaking work fuelled his great
attention to detail - a real advantage in his profession
of industrial designer. I feel like Ive come a long
way, explains this son of an artist and farmer
who is now an industrial designer at Fuseproject
in San Francisco.
With an atypical background (an advanced vocational
degree in Plastics Processing), he admits design
has taken a major part of my life. After two years
in China and the launch of a range of dish brushes
called Swashies which have already been sold
by millions, Arthur has just designed a connected
padlock called August Smart Lock in the heart
of the Silicon Valley. This highly sophisticated device
enables users to unlock their door instantly
and to send virtual keys via a mobile phone.
Simple, safe and sociable, this connected object
is an intuitive and smart way of sharing your house,
explains Arthur, who wants to set up his own
business in the Silicon Valley one day. This would be
a way for him to carry on making his talent known
all over the world and to have even more impact!

hautement technologique permet aux utilisateurs
de dverrouiller leur porte instantanment et denvoyer
des cls virtuelles via un tlphone portable.
Simple, sr et social, cet objet connect est une faon

Being a UX Designer is a bit like playing chess,


laughs Andrews-Junior, you have to be able to plan
several moves ahead and the more experience you
have, the better you are!. Thinking ahead is precisely
the daily challenge that faces Andrews-Junior,
a designer at Google in California.
Indeed, with Android Auto, this designer and his team
have tried to predict every possible function of
a telephone that a driver might want to use in the car.
With this new software, the built-in car screen takes
over from the phone and voice commands allow you
to control the car, listen to music and communicate
with others. The key constraint in this project
was security, explains Andrews-Junior, as we had
to measure the slightest impact on driving.
A Google employee for over 3 years, Andrews-Junior
considers himself lucky. He remembers the exact
words of the HR director when he was recruited:
You know youve got more chance of getting into
Harvard than being hired at Google!
Today, Andrews-Junior recognizes the great freedom
offered by the American giant as economic constraints
are not a central factor for projects and the impact
is staggering since we reach up to 100 million users
in the world!

avec autrui. La contrainte majeure dans ce projet rsidait
dans la scurit, explique Andrews-Junior, car nous devions
mesurer le moindre impact sur la conduite.
Salari de Google depuis plus de 3 ans, Andrews-Junior
se dit chanceux . Il se souvient dailleurs de cette phrase
lance par la D.R.H. au moment de son recrutement :
Vous savez que vous avez plus de chance de rentrer

Aujourdhui, Andrews-Junior reconnat la grande libert
quoffre le gant amricain car les contraintes conomiques

It was during her studies in China that Isabelle


discovered the appeal of food culture. Drawn by the
huge potential for innovation, on returning to France
she decided to concentrate on food design.
Its a way of exploring the endless possibilities
of an ephemeral but vital product and also of rethinking
the industrial system, explains Isabelle, who is
currently working as a food designer at Fleury Michon
(leader in the cold meats/ready meal sector).
Meeting consumers expectations, Isabelle was involved
in the Ball in Box project, an eating-on-the-go
concept. The duo of deep-fried potato and meatballs
has been on sale since January 2014 and has sold
over 450 tons.
In food design you have to fight to defend your ideas,
especially in this sector where there is still so much
to do! claims Isabelle, who dreams of integrating
traditional cuisine. Our function is to create a story
about the meal, to initiate an experience in order
to imprint on peoples imagination. Exactly like Proust
and his madeleine.

Our aim is to make drinking water accessible


to the 748 million people all over the world who
currently do not have access to it, explains
Alessandra, user interface designer at Charity: Water.
In this NGO, all the funds raised via our platform
are entirely dedicated to financing the projects
we run. And thats really quite unique!
Alessandra spends her days working on
the Dispatch Monitor platform which centralizes
the data collected by remote sensors. This initiative,
created through a partnership with google.org, makes
it possible to verify water flow in real time.
This project requires excellent knowledge of major
information flows and visual design, explains
Alessandra, since it must be accessible to everyone,
from users based in our offices in New York
to our local partners in countries like Ethiopia
or Bangladesh. Its a really exciting intercultural
project! In the future, Alessandra wishes
to continue putting her design at the service
of the common good.

dinformation et du design visuel, explique Alessandra,
car il doit tre accessible tous, des utilisateurs situs
dans nos bureaux New York jusqu nos partenaires
locaux dans des pays comme lthiopie ou le Bangladesh.
Cest un projet interculturel passionnant !
Alessandra souhaite continuer dans les annes venir
mettre son design au service du bien commun .

How can we represent the sometimes unpalatable


statistics which rule the lives of citizens? How can we
prioritize them? How can we give citizens the means
to interact with this data? These are the questions
which the Emerging Issues Commons project based
in North Carolina seeks to answer.
Swanny Mouton, interaction designer at Second
Story, part of SapientNitro, helped set up this
interface which features an interactive wall and
touch tables to make statistics more appealing
and educational. With this installation, citizens
can be informed of, collaborate and act on public
policies, explains Swanny. The projects entrusted
to the design studio Second Story are unique,
enthuses Swanny, we are in a constant process
of exploration and experimentation.
In the field of interactivity, designers have important
responsibilities, claims Swanny, who strives
to give meaning to each of his projects. The creative
potential is endless, he declares, but you have
to be aware of both the opportunities and the risks
when you reach a large public, you have to preserve
and communicate a form of ethics through design.
Id like to have a role closer to the public, especially
the younger public, to make them aware of these
digital ethics.

hirarchiser ? Comment donner aux citoyens les moyens
dinteragir avec ces donnes ? Cest ces questions
que rpond le projet Emerging Issues Commons, install
en Caroline du Nord.
Swanny Mouton, designer dinteractivit chez Second
Story, part of SapientNitro, a particip la cration
de cette interface qui permet, grce un mur interactif
et des tables tactiles, de rendre les statistiques
attrayantes et pdagogiques. Grce cette installation,
explique Swanny, les citoyens peuvent sinformer,
collaborer et agir sur les politiques publiques. Les projets
confis au studio de design Second Story sont uniques,
se rjouit Swanny, nous sommes constamment dans
lexploration et dans lexprimentation .
Dans le domaine de linteractivit galement, le designer
a dimportantes responsabilits soutient Swanny,
qui sattache donner du sens chacun de ses projets.
Le potentiel cratif y est infini , affirme-t-il, mais il faut
avoir conscience la fois des opportunits et des risques
lorsque lon touche un important public, conserver
et communiquer une forme dthique par le design.
Jaimerais participer plus prs du public, surtout
le plus jeune, pour le sensibiliser cette thique dans
le monde numrique .

I made a career out of my passion, enthuses


Aubin, lighting designer at Philips Lighting.
I get up every morning and feel proud to go to work.
Aubins passion is lighting. At the age of just 17,
this inquisitive designer created a blog devoted
to public street lighting. Lighting designers must
have an understanding of economic realities,
insists Aubin who illuminates sites as diverse
as the faade of a small village church to entire cities.
In this project for the R ATP (a French public
transport operator), Aubin created an innovative
ambiance for a train station. By changing
the color-scheme and creating broken graphic
lines, he brought a new dimension to this space
while taking into account use constraints,
speed of installation, ease of maintenance and
reduced energy consumption.
Aubin brings an illuminated and illuminating
perspective to the city. He states that lighting
shapes the urban landscape and enhances
attractiveness. He takes a keen interest in the impact
of lighting on social behaviors and takes part
in many conferences. The perfect way for him
to share his know-how and to pass on his passion.

La passion qui anime Aubin, cest la lumire.
Ce designer curieux de tout a dailleurs cr un blog
ddi lclairage public ds lge de 17 ans.
Le concepteur lumire doit avoir le sens des ralits
conomiques insiste Aubin qui met en lumire des sites
qui vont de la faade de la petite glise du quartier
lagglomration dune ville.
Sur ce projet de la RATP , Aubin a cr pour une station
de voyageurs une ambiance novatrice . Grce aux
changements de couleurs, la cration de lignes
graphiques disjointes, il a amen une nouvelle dimension
cet espace tout en intgrant les contraintes dusage,
de rapidit dinstallation, de facilit de maintenance
et de rductions nergtiques.
Aubin porte un regard clair et clairant sur la ville.
Il affirme que la lumire faonne le paysage urbain
et influence lattractivit . Il sintresse de prs
limpact de lclairage sur les comportements
sociaux et participe de nombreuses confrences.
Une belle faon pour lui de partager son savoir-faire
et de transmettre sa passion.

It was a real adventure in human relations,


reminisces Mathieu Servais, designer in the Schneider
Electric group, leader in energy management.
At the beginning, this flashing light project
was intended for Japan. I was working with Japanese
people who couldnt speak a word of English
we could only communicate using onomatopoeia.
So drawing quickly became the universal language!
laughs Mathieu.
This flashing light, the result of an unprecedented
collaboration for Mathieu, won the Red Dot Award.
The jury particularly appreciated its modernity
but also its durability, its high energy efficiency
and use of LED s.
In a few years, Mathieu has acclimatized well to life
in China which he describes as a really dynamic
country where opportunities are plentiful. It was
thanks to the Director of the Europe Design Lab
being present at his oral degree presentation
that Mathieu managed to get the job at Schneider
Electric. Lcole de design has an excellent
reputation in China, he remarks, as the students
are immediately operational. Our training program
is very specific which is a real asset for recruiters!

Ctait une vraie aventure humaine se souvient


Mathieu Servais, designer dans le groupe
Schneider Electric, leader en gestion dnergie.
Au dpart, ce projet de gyrophare tait destin
au Japon. Je travaillais avec des japonais
qui ne parlaient pas un mot danglais, nous ne nous
exprimions que par onomatopes. Alors le dessin
sest trs vite impos comme une langue universelle !
samuse Mathieu.
Ce gyrophare, fruit dune collaboration indite
pour Mathieu, a reu le Prix Red Dot. Le jury a salu,
entre autres, sa modernit mais aussi sa rsistance,
sa grande performance nergtique et lutilisation
de LED .
En quelques annes, Mathieu sest bien acclimat
la Chine, un pays super dynamique assure-t-il
o les opportunits sont nombreuses. Cest dailleurs
grce la prsence du directeur du Design Lab Europe
sa soutenance de diplme que Mathieu a russi
dcrocher ce poste chez Schneider Electric.
Lcole de design a une trs bonne cte en Chine,
constate-il, car les lves sont oprationnels tout
de suite. Notre formation, trs spcifique, reprsente
un vrai atout pour les recruteurs !

Luxury involves a wealth of details and requires


a very high level of precision, explain Mathilde and
Thibault, designers at MPA Communication agency.
Specialized in luxury cosmetics and perfume,
they have developed a global communication
and merchandising concept for Chlo Parfums.
Their project features gold and ivory hot air balloons
which conjure up the poetry of an enchanted journey
and embody the brands understated elegance.
We wanted to inspire people with the stories
we create around products, underline the duo
who wish to make a real impression with their
product and trigger sales.
Luxury brands are highly codified and the multitude
of parties involved often slows down the decisionmaking process, they explain with regret.
On the other hand, they appreciate the diversity
of products and the high level of autonomy they enjoy
when managing projects. According to Mathilde
and Thibault, their success at finding an opening
in their agency is due to the internship and final degree
project. Hence this precious piece of advice:
choose your internship very carefully and make sure
your research projects are tangible and practical.

cosmtiques et les fragrances de luxe, ils ont
imagin un concept global de communication
et de merchandising pour Chlo Parfums.
Dans ce projet, les montgolfires or et ivoire voquent
avec posie la ferie du voyage et incarnent
la sobrit et llgance de la marque. Il faut toucher
les gens par lhistoire que lon raconte autour
du produit insiste le duo qui souhaite marquer
les imaginaires pour dclencher la vente .
Les marques de luxe sont trs codifies
et la multitude des interlocuteurs retarde souvent
les dcisions regrettent-ils parfois. Cependant
ils apprcient la diversit des produits et leur
grande autonomie dans la conduite des projets.
Si Mathilde et Thibault ont russi se faire
une place dans leur agence, cest grce leurs
stages et leurs projets de fin dtudes.
Do ce prcieux conseil : tre stratgique
dans le choix de son stage et faire des projets
dtudes tangibles .
