Gravity
A force of attractionexists in every body in the universe. It has been investigatedby
many scientistsincluding Galileo and Newton. This gravitationalforce dependson the mass
of the bodiesinvolved.Normally it is very small but when one of the bodiesis a planet.like
the earth, the force is considerable.Everything on or near the surfaceof the earth is attracted
by the massof the earth. The greaterthe mass, the greateris the earth's force of attractionon
it. We call this force of attraction gravity.
Becauseof gravity, bodieshaveweight. We can perceiveweight only rvhena body resists
gravity. For example,r.vhenwe pick up a stone there are two forces involved. One is the
lifting force r.veexert, and the other is the force of gravity which attractsthe stoneclorvn',vards
and thus gives it rveight. When a body escapesfrom the influenceof the earth'sgravitational
pr.rll,it can become'weightless'.
For example,the centrifugalforceof a spacecraft
spirrningin
orbit round the earth cancels the effect of gravity. The crelv therefbre experiences
weightlessness.
One of the minor disadvantages
of weightlessness
is that normai pens'nvillnot
rvritebecausethe ink is not attractedby gravity to flow out of the pens.
