/:.v Sopranino l. Ténor SO

E X P L A N A T O R Y NOTE
II Notes comprising the múltiple sound. The predominating notes are generally those which can be
played separately (column VI).
Shortest d u r a t i o n for w h i c h i t is audible. Unless otherwise indicated the longest duration depends
only upon the length ofbreath ; the amount ofair needed is greater than for a «normal» note. Con
tinuous breathing (with a few exceptions) is impossible.
Certain múltiple sounds cannot be produced i f they are preceded or foUowed b y another múltiple
sound. The small note indícales the m i n i m u m length o f the notes or o f the preparatory múltiple
sound. Ex : Sopranino 1, Tenor 80.
The easiest to produce are those whose valué can be the shortest.
The easiest to join are those between which shakes are possible (column V).
III The quickest r h y t h m i n w h i c h a múltiple sound can be repeated. In certain unstable múltiple
sounds repetitions are made with varying degrees of intensity among their component notes.
Possible d y n a m i c levéis.
V N u m b e r o f the múltiple sounds w i t h w h i c h shakes are possible . Certain shakes may have a //.-
mited duration. Ex .sopranino, shake 1011102 : máximum duration 5".
Notes w i t h w h i c h shakes are possible . The latter can he ohtained h y m o d i f y i n g the fingering
in the manner indicated i n c o l u m n I V . Ex : *-Eb, -4, etc..
Certain shakes between notes and múltiple sounds may have a limited duration :
o- 6" l o 4" I f>- 3" I • ad libitum.
VI Certain c o m p o n e n t notes o f a múltiple sound can he played separately. / / these are ijt, b l(
they do not have the same tone-quality as with normal fingering. (See in column VI if they must
not be preceded by the múltiple sound).
VII Over and above the use o f múltiple sounds interposed between «normal» notes @ orjoinedto
other múltiple sounds yb) , i t is sometimos possible t o precede or foUow the muítiple sound h y
one o f its c o m p o n e n t notes hy using the fingering expecially indicated : c o l u m n I V Q .
The indication f o r the length o f the note thus e x t r a c t e d is that o f the shortest possible. Unless
otherwise indicated its length is limited only by one's breath.
The múltiple sound has the characteristics given i n columns I I and I I I . Unless otherwise indicated
the d y n a m i c levéis o f the extracted note are those given i n c o l u m n V I .
The r h y t h m given is the quickest possible, slowness o f t e m p o heing u n l i m i t e d (unless impossihility
is indicated).
The lenght given i n E ] applies t o instances i n w h i c h the simple sequence extracted note - múltiple
sound - extracted note is exceeded ( d ) .
This lenght in consequence applies as m u c h t o the múltiple sounds as t o the extracted note. It is pos-
sible to combine the different possibilíties of this column. For example, one may begin with one
the component elements and, having passed by the múltiple sound, end with another, if this can
low the múltiple sound .
The fingering sometimes allows the p r o d u c t i o n o f individual notes w h i c h are n o t t o he f o u n d i n the
corresponding múltiple sound. This is generally the case in the uppermost register and at the dyna-
mic level forte ( f ) .
The joining of the extracted note with the múltiple sound is more or less gradual (merging) rare
abrupt.
The múltiple sounds which contain the breath sign « S » (column III) can be alternated : breath /
múltiple sound. (j b,|^ -g- ^ -^^
Ex : Sopranino, 35.
