even in the night my heart exhorts me.

Composer Notes
Piano, organ, guitar, and cello frame this testament of faith and trust. Explore opportunities for
sustained sonorities without motion, but with accurate rhythm. For example: in verse 1, “my Lord
are you…” the six counts on “you” could be sustained without movement. Executing the rest on
beat three accurately cues in the pick-up note on beat four for the next phrase “O Lord, my
allotted portion…” Accurate, sustained accompaniment, without motion establishes a
subconscious “trust” between the instrumentalists and the vocalists, creating a reliable and
hospitable environment in which to participate in prayer and song.
This song is especially useful for: Easter Vigil (after second reading); 3rd Sunday of Easter (A);
13th Sunday in Ordinary Time (C); 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time (B); plus Funerals and
Reconciliation Services.
