(1) This chart is based on ASHRAE (1998) for type “L” refrigeration grade copper pipe.
(2) equivalent Length in meters represent “total equivalent lengths” including valves and fittings. Refer to TABLE - 5 for estimations of “equivalent lengths’ of valves and fittings.
(3) This chart is to assist the design engineer in selecting the appropriate diameter pipe to suit the duty and is not intended to be a substitute for best practice design.
(4) Duties are based on 40C SCT. Multiply required duty by the following factors for other condensing temperatures : 20C = 0.85, 30C = 0.91, 40C = 1.00, 45C = 1.05, 50C = 1.10.
(5) Nominal HP’s are to assist you to obtain a “rough” unit size at each evaporating temperature (@ 40C condensing temperature).
(6) Suction line ΔP loss should not exceed 3psi (5psi for R410a).
(7) Economics, pressure drop, noise, and oil entrapment require establishing feasible design velocities in refrigerant lines.
• Suction line 700 to 4000 fpm • Discharge line 500 to 3500 fpm
• Condenser drain line ≤ 100 fpm • Liquid line 125 to 450 fpm
