• One of the eight parts of speech , adjectives are a
type of modifier; that is, they modify or describe nouns in a certain way, it can be the size, shape, weight, color, nationality, or any other possible qualities of nouns. • Adjectives serve the same purpose in French and English, but they are very different in other respects. The major differences between adjectives in French and English are agreement and placement. In English, an adjective usually comes before the noun it modifies and it does not change. In French, an adjective is usually placed after the noun it modifies and must agree in gender and number with the noun. Gender and Number of French Adjectives
• English adjectives have a single form, but
French adjectives can have up to 4 forms, according to the gender and number of the nouns they modify. masculine singular masculine plural

The feminine is normally formed by adding an – e to the masuline form. Ex: Caroline est grande . But it does not take another e if the already ending in an e Ex: sympathique(m.s) sympathique(f.s) The plural is formed by adding – s to the singular form. Ex: ils sont grands Elles sont grandes But it does take another – s if already ending with –s Ex : il est gros ils sont gros Some examples 1. Manuel est grand . (noun) (adj.) 2.
