EDITORIAL COMMENTS

Measure numbers are found at the beginning of each system.

Text: Morgan assembled the text from several different sources, including publications by Occom, Cennick, and Watts. See
Appendix B of Bandel, Sing the Lords Song in a Strange Land, 1981 for an analysis of the text. I have added punctuation, mostly
following William Hausers Hesperian Harp , 1848.
m.1: In the Rudiments of Psalmody (p. 9 of the Federal Harmony ), the backwards C time signature indicates the third mode
of common time, which contains one semibreve [whole note] and two beats, one down and one up, two seconds [in total].
This definition was common to other books of the era.
m.32: In all editions before the modern era, the anthem alternates between E minor and Eb major. Karl Kroeger (1997) proposed that
Morgans intention was to alternate between parallel major and minor keys; here, E minor and E major are used.
m.32: In the Easy Instructor and subsequent shape-note editions, the counter/alto solo is in the minor key and the key change
comes at the beginning of the treble solo (m.45).
m.139: In shape-note editions, the Hark! solos alternate between 5-la (B) and 1-la (E), rather than 4-sol (A) and 1-la.
m.176: The counter/alto is silent on the word flames in the original. This may be a misprint, or perhaps it is word painting.
m.199: The first mode of common time indicated here contains one semibreve, or its quantity, between each single bar, and four
beats, two down and two up, four seconds of time [in total].
