5 ES EN 0 : Basis of Design 6
Section 1 General
5/31/2017
The general assumptions of ES EN 1990:2015 are: (ES EN 0 : 1.3)
ES EN 0 qualified, skilled and experienced personnel choice of the structural
system + design + execution;
Basis of Structural Design adequate supervision and quality control is provided during execution of
the work, i.e. in design offices, factories, plants, and on site;
construction materials and products are used as specified in other ES EN
Codes, standards, or product specifications;
structure will be adequately maintained; and used in accordance with
the design assumptions.

Principles and Application Rules (ES EN 0 : 1.4) ES EN 0 : 1.5 Terms and Definitions;
Principles comprise general statements and definitions for which there is no ES EN 0 : 4.1 Actions & Environmental Influences;
alternative, as well as; requirements and analytical models for which no
alternative is permitted unless specifically stated. Identified by the letter P
following the paragraph number.
Application Rules are generally recognized rules which comply with the
s
Principles and satisfy their requirements. Alternative design rules (other than the t
Application Rules given in ES EN) can be used, provided the alternative rules
accord with the relevant Principles and are at least equivalent with regard to
the structural safety, serviceability and durability which would be expected

It will not be damaged by events such as explosion, impact or the designing the structure to survive adequately the accidental removal of
consequences of human error, to an extent which is disproportionate an individual member or a limited part of the structure, or the occurrence
to the original cause. (ES EN 0: 2.1) of acceptable localized damage;
Defines ways by which potential damage can be avoided or avoiding structural systems that can collapse without warning;
limited. These include: (ES EN 0: 2.1) tying the structural members together.
avoiding, eliminating or reducing the hazards to which the structure may
be subjected;
selecting a structural form which has low sensitivity to the hazards
identified;

Section 3 Principles of Limit State Design Section 3 Principles of Limit State Design
Design according to the structural ES EN follows Limit State principles. Design situations under ULS shall be classified as follows (ES EN 0: 3.2) :
Principal limit states for which the structure needs to be designed are the persistent design situations, refer to the conditions of normal use;
ultimate limit state (ULS) and the serviceability limit state (SLS).
transient design situations, refer to temporary conditions applicable to the
structure, e.g. during execution or repair;
Ultimate Serviceability
accidental design situations, which refer to exceptional conditions
applicable to the structure or to its exposure, e.g. to fire, explosion, impact
Safety of people Proper functioning of structure or thereof
or the consequences of localized failure;
under normal use
seismic design situations, which refer to conditions applicable to the
Safety of the structure Comfort of people structure when subjected to seismic events.

Section 5 Structural analysis and design assisted by testing Section 6 Verification by the partial factor method
Structural analysis shall be carried out (ES EN 0: 5.1): In all design situations, no limit state is exceeded when design values for
using appropriate structural models, involving relevant variables; actions or effects of actions and resistances are used in the design
models. (ES EN 0: 6.1)
based on established engineering theory and practice.
(ES EN 0: 6.4)
Design may be based on a combination of tests and analysis. Testing
may be carried out (ES EN 0: 5.2):
if adequate calculation models are not available;
if a large number of similar components are to be used;
to confirm by control checks assumptions made in the design.
