cable bag and please transfer it to the new owner
if the charging cable is sold.

Safety instructions
To guarantee uninterrupted charging operation
with the charging cable with display unit, follow
the following instructions and recommendations:
- Before installation, check whether with the
present house installation the additional power
required for charging a vehicle can be made
available permanently. If necessary, secure the
house installation with an energy management
system.
- Only use the charging cable with display unit
on grounded power networks. The grounding
conductor must be installed properly.
- For new installation of the outlet, select an
industrial outlet with the largest possible power
(adapted to the electrical house installation)
and have it installed and put into service by a
qualified electrician.
- Dimension the electrical installation, insofar
as technically possible and legally permitted,
so that the maximum rated power of the outlet
used is permanently available for charging the
vehicle.
- To use the capacity of the charging cable with
display unit optimally and guarantee quick
charging, use NEMA outlets with the highest
possible current rating corresponding to the
power plug or industrial outlets according to
IEC 60320.
- When charging the high-voltage battery via the
household outlet, the electrical installation can
be loaded up to its maximum capacity. Volkswa-
gen Group of America recommends having the
electrical installation used for charging checked
regularly by an electrician. Ask an electrician
what inspection intervals make sense for your
installation.
WARNING
The use of a damaged or defective charging
cable or of a damaged or defective outlet,
improper use of the display unit or a failure to
heed the safety instructions can cause short-
circuits, electric shocks, explosions, fires or
burns.
• Do not use damaged and/or dirty charging
cables with display unit. Check the cable
and plug connector for damage and dirt
before use.
• Only connect the charging cable with
display unit to properly installed and unda-
maged outlets and electrical installations
that have no defects.
• Do not use an extension cable, cable
drums, multiple outlets or (travel) adap-
ters.
• Disconnect the charging cable with dis-
play unit from the power network during a
thunderstorm.
• Do not make changes or repairs to electri-
cal components.
• Never immerse the display unit and the
plugs in water or subject them to a direct
steam of water (e.g. pressure washers or
garden hoses).
• Only clean the charging cable if the dis-
play unit is completely disconnected from
the power network and the vehicle.
• Use a dry cloth for cleaning.
WARNING
Improperly installed outlets can cause electric
shock or fire when charging the high-voltage
battery via the vehicle charging connection.
• Installation and start-up of the outlet for
the charging cable with display unit may
only be performed by a qualified electri-
cian. The electrician is responsible here
for complete compliance with the existing
standards and regulations.

• Specify the cable cross-section of the feed
line to the outlet taking into consideration
the line length and locally applicable regu-
lations and standards.
• Connect the outlet used for charging via a
separately fused circuit that complies with
the local laws and standards.
• The charging cable with display unit is
intended for use in the private and semi-
public sector (e.g. private properties,
company parking lots).
• During unattended charging, unauthorized
people (e.g. children at play) must have
no access to the charging cable with
display unit and vehicle.
• Follow the safety instructions in the ins-
tallation instructions and in the vehicle‘s
owner‘s manual.
WARNING
Unsecured, improperly secured or incorrectly
positioned objects can slide during braking,
acceleration, change of direction or in case of
accidents; these can endanger passengers and
cause severe injuries.
• Never transport the charging cable with
display unit and adapter line(s)

• Use the included bag for the charging
cable to securely store the charging cable
with display unit and the adapter line(s).

Explanation of pictograms

Depending on the country, various warnings may

be affixed to the display unit:

Symbol Meaning
Operate and store the charging cable with display unit in a temperature
range of -22 °F (-30 °C) to 122 °F (+50 °C).
Operate and store the charging cable with display unit at an altitude of maximum
13.123 ft (4000 m) above sea level.

Only operate the charging cable with display unit on single-phase networks.

• To prevent overheating during operation, do
not permanently subject the display unit to
solar radiation. In case of overheating of the
display unit, the charging process is inter-
rupted automatically until the temperature
has dropped back into the normal range.

Operating instructions

NOTE
If used incorrectly, the charging cable with
display unit can be damaged.
• Always place the display unit on a firm
subsurface when charging.
• Volkswagen Group of America recom-
mends operating the display unit in the
wall bracket => page 9.
• Never immerse the charging cable with
display unit in water.
• Protect the charging cable with display
unit against snow and ice.
• Protect the charging cable with display
unit against being driven over, falling,
pulling, bending, and crushing.
• The charging cable with display unit may
only be operated in a temperature range
of -22 °F (-30 °C) to +122 °F (+50 °C).

Vehicle charging connections and vehicle
charging plug

Depending on the country equipment, there are
various vehicle charging connections -1- and ve-
hicle charging plugs -2-. This product is intended
exclusively for this variant with the
standard IEC 62196-2 Type 1.

For regular charging at optimal charging speed,
use only the following adapter lines. The maxi-
mum charge power that can be achieved is up to
7.68 kW (depending on the power network/house
connection and on-board charger).
Adapter lines for household outlets
In the figure -3- depicts outlets, plugs, standard
and designation of the adapter lines to be used
for household outlets.

The plug of the adapter line is disconnected from
and plugged into the top end of the display unit.
Prerequisites
- The charging process of the high-voltage batte-
ry has ended.
- The vehicle charging plug has been disconnec-
ted from the vehicle charging connection.
- The power plug has been disconnected from
the outlet.
Disconnecting the adapter line:
- Pull adapter line Fig. 4 -1- out of the display
unit -2-.
Fastening the adapter line:
- Plug adapter line Fig. 4 -1- into the display
unit -2- as shown. Make sure that the adapter
line is plugged in completely
(Fig. 4, magnifying glass).
WARNING
Danger of severe or deadly injuries due to
electric shock.
• Before changing the adapter line, discon-
nect the adapter line from the outlet and
remove the vehicle cable from the vehicle
charging connection.
• Only change the line in a dry environment.

- Plug the power plug into the outlet. The control

lamp lights up red briefly.
Display unit - Plug the vehicle charging plug into the vehicle
charging connection. The control lamp on the
display unit lights up blue. For information about
connecting the vehicle cable to the vehicle
charging connection => see owner’s manual for
the vehicle.
- Charging starts automatically. The control lamp
on the display unit flashes blue. Charging is
controlled by the vehicle. The charge status can
be read off in the vehicle.

The control lamp -1- indicates the operating

WARNING

• Always adhere to the specified sequence
when charging.
• Do not unplug the vehicle cable from
the vehicle charging connection when
charging. Finish charging before unplug-
ging the vehicle cable from the vehicle
charging connection.
• Do not unplug the charging cable with
display unit from the outlet when charging.
• Possible errors are indicated via the
control lamp => Fig. 5 -1- through different
colors, lights, and flashing => page 10.

Charging current limitation

The display unit automatically detects the voltage

and current available.

Grounding conductor monitoring
The grounding conductor is always monitored.
The error message about interrupted or missing
grounding conductor is displayed on the display
unit => page 10.
WARNING
Using the charging unit with display unit without
active grounding conductor monitoring can
cause short-circuits, electric shocks, explosi-
ons, fires or burns.
• Only use the charging cable with display
unit on grounded power networks.
Charging times
For information about charging times => see the
owner‘s manual for the vehicle.
Duration of charging
The duration of charging can vary depending on
the following factors:
- Current carrying capacity of the outlet used
(household outlet or industrial outlet).
- 120 V or 240 V supply voltage.
- Fluctuations in the supply voltage.
- Environmental temperature of vehicle and char-
ging cable with display unit. At temperatures
in the limit ranges of the permissible ambient
temperature, charging times may be
longer => page 6.
- Temperature of the high-voltage battery and
display unit.
- Pre-air conditioning of the interior temperature
is activated.
Volkswagen Group of America recommends
a Volkswagen partner since they have trained
workshop personnel and the required parts and
tools.
Transport
Before driving, store the charging cable with
display unit safely in the vehicle => see owner‘s
manual for the vehicle.
WARNING
Unsecured, improperly secured or incorrectly

Information about plugging in and removing the

vehicle charging plug into/from the vehicle char-
ging connection and about the charging and con-
nection status on the vehicle charging connection
