General and guidance

Measurements and tests methods for optical fibre.

FOREWORD

1) The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) is a worldwide organization for standardization

comprising all national eletrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of the IEC is to
promote international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic
fields. To this end and in addition to all other activities, the IEC publishes International Standards. Their

preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt
with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental
organizations in liaison with the IEC also participate in this preparation. The IEC collaborates closely with the
International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement
between the two organizations.

2) The formal decisions or agreements of the IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible,
an international consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has
representation from all interested National Committees.

3) The documents produced have the form of recommendations for international use and are
published in the form of standards, technical reports or guides and they are accepted by the
National Committees in that sense.

4) In order to promote international unification, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC
International Standards transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional
standards. Any divergence between the IEC Standard and the corresponding national or regional
standard shall be clearly indicated in the latter.

5) The IEC provides no marking procedure to indicate its approval and cannot be rendered
responsible for any equipment declared to be in conformity with one of its standards.

6) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this International Standard may be
the subject of patent rights. The IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such
patent rights.

International Standard IEC 60793-1-1 has been prepared by subcommittee 86A: Fibres and
cables, of IEC technical committee 86: Fibre optics.

This second edition, cancels and replaces the first edition published in 1999 and its
amendments.

The text of this standard is based on the following documents:

1 Scope and Object

The object of this document is to list, and give an overview of, the documents giving the
uniform requirements for measuring and testing optical fibres, thereby assisting in the
inspection of fibres and cables for commercial (mostly telecommunications) purposes.

The individual measurement and test methods are contained in a series of documents that are
sections of this standard. They are identified as IEC 60793-1-X, where "X" is an assigned
section number, indicating its affiliation to IEC 60793-1. See tables 4-7 for a complete listing
of all attributes, the assigned document numbers, and the corresponding, previously assigned
number for each method:

♦ optical;
♦ dimensional;
♦ mechanical;
♦ environmental.

In general, measurements and tests methods apply to all class A multimode fibres and class
B single-mode optical fibres covered by IEC 60793-2, although there may be exceptions.
Clause 1 of each sectional document contains the scope for each particular attribute.

2 Normative references
The following normative documents contain provisions which, through reference in this text or
in the text of the subsidiary Sectional specifications, constitute provisions of this part of IEC
60793. For dated references, subsequent amendments to, or revisions of, any of these

publications do not apply. However, parties to agreements based on this part of IEC 60793
are encouraged to investigate the possibility of applying the most recent editions of the
normative documents indicated below. For undated references, the latest edition of the
normative document referred to applies. Members of the IEC and ISO maintain registers of

3 Categories of measurements and test procedures
The categories are:

a) Parameter measurements;

b) Performance measurements;
c) Compliance tests.

4 Standard atmospheric measurement and test conditions

Standard atmospheric conditions need to be controlled within some range to ensure proper
correlation of data obtained from measurements and tests conducted in various facilities.
Conduct measurement and test conditions under the following atmospheric conditions unless
otherwise specified. In some cases special ambient conditions may be needed and can be
specified in the detail specification.

Table 1 gives the standard range of atmospheric conditions for carrying out measurements
and tests:

Condition Standard

Temperature 23 °C ± 5 °C
Relative humidity (45 ± 25) %
Atmospheric pressure
Site ambient

(limits are inclusive)

Table 1 - Standard range of atmospheric conditions

Keep variations in ambient temperature and humidity to a minimum during a series of

measurements.

5 Calibration guidance

The process of calibration may be defined as the set of operations which establish, under
specified conditions, the relationship between values indicated by a measuring system and
the known values of a reference material. Once established, this relationship may be used to
adjust the measuring system to correct for measurement bias. Adjustment of the system may,
for example, take the form of hardware or a software adjustment.

Follow the instructions given in the test procedure documents as may be necessary for

calibration and adjustment of the apparatus to ensure successful application of the

documents. If suitable reference materials do not exist then consideration should be given to
an appropriate strategy to minimise measurement uncertainty.

Record relevant information of the calibration process, such as the calibrated value and

uncertainty of the reference material or test equipment used.

6 Definitions

The definitions of IEC 61931 apply.

60793-1-1 Ed. 2/CDV  IEC 7

7 Reference test methods

Several attributes have an agreed-upon reference test method (RTM). This is the method that

shall be used to settle disputes.

8 Categories of optical fibres

8.1 Class A - Multimode fibres
Fibre categories are based on g, the refractive index profile parameter.
The normalized index profile is expressed as :
δ (x) = 1 -xg

n( x) − n(1)
where : δ (x) =
n(0) − n(1)
and: n(x) = refractive index at x
x= r o ≤ r ≤ a
a

where a = core radius

Category Material Type Limits

A1 Glass core/glass cladding Graded index fibre 1≤g<3

A2 Glass core/glass cladding Quasi step index fibre 3≤g<∞
A3 Glass core/plastic cladding Step index fibre 10 ≤ g < ∞
A4 Plastic core/plastic cladding Step index fibre 10 ≤ g < ∞

Table 2 - Categories of multimode fibres

Note: Attention is drawn to the index profile as stated in the detail specification. For some applications, g may be

specified as a function of x. The fibre category is determined on the basis of the g value which best fits the
normalized refractive index profile, falling within the category defined above.

60793-1-1 Ed. 2/CDV  IEC 8

8.2 Class B - Single-mode fibres

The categories of single-mode fibres currently in use are given in the table below :

Category Type Description

B1.1 Dispersion This dispersion unshifted single mode fibre is optimized for use
unshifted in the 1310 nm region but can be used in the 1550 nm region.
Depending on link length and bit rates, dispersion may need
accommodation in the 1550 nm region.
B1.2 Cut-off shifted This category of dispersion unshifted single-mode fibre is
optimized for low loss in the 1550 nm region, with cutoff

wavelength shifted above the 1310 nm region.
B1.3 Extended band This category of dispersion unshifted single-mode fiber is
intended to extend the range of possible transmission signals,
using 1310 nm band power budgets, to portions of the band
above 1360 nm and below 1530 nm. Chromatic dispersion in
this band may impose requirements either on the maximum link
length, or on the need for accommodation.
B2 Dispersion shifted This dispersion-shifted single-mode fibre is optimized for
single-channel transmission in the 1550 nm region. Multiple
channels can only be transmitted if care is taken to avoid the
effects of four-wave mixing by, for example, moderating the
power levels or appropriate spacing or placement of the
channels.
B4 Non-zero This non-zero dispersion-shifted fibre is optimised for multiple
dispersion-shifted channel transmission in the 1550 nm region with cutoff
wavelength that may be shifted above the 1310 nm region. The
dispersion coefficient is required to be non-zero throughout the

band from 1530 nm to 1565 nm, but may be either positive or
negative. Depending on the dispersion characteristics, multiple
channel transmission may be possible at bands either above or

below the normal 1550 nm region.

Table 3 - Categories of glass core/glass clad single-mode fibres

9 Packaging
For handling and shipping of optical fibres the packaging device shall meet the following

requirements :
a) Winding techniques shall enable the optical fibre to withstand transport and specified
environmental conditions.
b) The possibility of measuring the dimensions, transmission and optical characteristics
of the optical fibre without removal of the fibre from the packaging device shall be
indicated.
c) Standard reel dimensions (for future consideration).
