Les responsables de la programmation d’été à
SKOL présentent An Atlas, une exposition
itinérante d’artistes engagés dans la « cartographie
radicale ». L’exposition est présentée en parallèle à
la publication An Atlas of Radical Cartography,
(Journal of Aesthetics and Protest Press, Los
Angeles.) L’exposition durera du 20 juin au 8 juillet
; le vernissage aura lieu le vendredi 20 juin. Les
commissaires Alexis Bhagat et Lize Mogel seront
présents le 18 juin et le 9 juillet pour animer les
rencontres hebdomadaires du groupe de lecture à
SKOL.
La cartographie radicale est une pratique
artistique qui combine les cartes, la géographie et
l’art dans une démarche d’activisme social. Les
artistes, les architectes et les collectifs qui
participent à l’exposition emploient et
déconstruisent les conventions de la cartographie,
comme les formes géographiques, les panneaux
de signalisations et les perspectives aériennes,
dans le but de sensibiliser le public à des sujets
d'actualité qui vont de la mondialisation à la gestion
des déchets.
Bien que la cartographie en tant que pratique
artistique ait surtout été utilisée dans les champs
de la technologie et de la performance, An Atlas
met en évidence l’aspect traditionnel de la carte
comme œuvre sur papier, ainsi que son rôle
d’acteur politique à part entière. Ce rôle est
d’ailleurs souligné par les idéaux de justice sociale
des producteurs eux-mêmes dans leurs pratiques
personnelles.
Les œuvres présentées incluent le schéma détaillé
de Ashley Hunt sur les effets sociaux des
complexes carcéraux industriels ; une mise en plan
des ouvriers qui gèrent « la machine à ordures » à
New York par The Center for Urban Pedagogy ;
le dessin de Jane Tsong sur la confrontation de la
nature et de la culture à la confluence des eaux à
Los Angeles ; et le tracé des parcours aériens des
vols secrets de la CIA par Trevor Paglen et John
Emerson.

The directors of SKOL’s summer programming are
proud to present An Atlas, a traveling exhibition of
radical cartography. Curated by Alexis Bhagat and
Lize Mogel, the exhibition is a companion to the
publication, An Atlas of Radical Cartography (Journal
of Aesthetics and Protest Press, Los Angeles). The
show will run from June 20 – July 8; the vernissage
will be on Friday June 20. The curators will host
special editions of SKOL’s summer reading group on
June 18 and July 9.
Radical cartography links art, geography, and
activism in order to recast maps and mapping as tools
for social change. The participating artists, architects,
and collectives in the exhibition play with cartographic
conventions, such as geographic shapes, wayfinding
symbols, and aerial views, in order to take on issues
from globalization to garbage.
While mapping in art practice has expanded into
technological and performative realms, An Atlas
focuses on a traditional aspect of the map as a work-
on-paper, and, importantly, its function as a political
agent. The latter is underscored by the mapmakers
themselves, who are committed to social justice within
their own diverse practices.
Works include Ashley Hunt’s intricate diagram of the
social effects of the global prison-industrial complex;
the Center for Urban Pedagogy’s mapping of the
people who make and manage the “garbage machine”
in New York City; Jane Tsong’s drawing of how
nature and culture clash in Los Angeles’ watershed;
and Trevor Paglen and John Emerson’s route map
of CIA rendition flights.
