Construction Sequence
4.1 Rover Base:
1. Obtain material (acrylic plastic) required for the construction of base as directed in material
section.
2. Check dimensions of material regarding the rover base drawing (Picture 4)
3. Using pencil and ruler outline the dimensions on acrylic plastic piece.
4. Using bandsaw cut the acrylic plastic base according to dimensions.
5. Re check to confirm dimensions of base is correct.

4.2 Axle Bearings:

1. Obtain 3D printing material required for axle bearing.
2. Input dimension values in printing machine.
3. Re check to confirm dimensions are correct according to design.

4.3 Axle:
Gather the required amount of material (aluminium rod).
Cut the rods according to the measurements given on table (Table 2: Dimension Summary 1)
Repeat this process once more for the second axle. One for front set of axle bearing and one
for rear axle bearing.

4.4 Wheels (CD):

1. Obtain the number of CDs required (24 CDs: 3 on each wheel).
2. Using super glue and firm precision glue all 3 CDs to each other to one wheel. Repeat for
next wheels.
3. Wait 8 10 minutes for glue to set and dry.
4. Using pen/marker of choice clearly mark out the correct locations and dimensions of points
to be drilled.
5. Using electric drill, drill the marked-out points.

4.5 Wheel Hub:

1. Obtain 3D printing material required for wheel bearing.
2. Apply measurements as stated in drawing (picture2).

4.6 Bottle Compartment:

1. Gather material (balsa wood) for compartment base and walls with correct amount as stated
in table (Bill of Material summary 1).
2. On the balsa wood, mark out dimensions for the 3 walls and 1 base according to dimension
specifics in table (Dimension Summary 1)
3. Using bandsaw cut out each section as mention in bold font above.
4. Using high strength super glue stick one wall to the base at one time. Make sure the wall
produce a 90 degree angle with base.
5. Wait 3-4 minutes before gluing each wall section to base.
6. After all 4 wall sections have been glued to base, allow the structure to set and dry for 8 10
minutes.

4.7 Velcro straps:

1. Gather the required amount of Velcro material as stated in
table (Bill of Material summary 1)
2. Using clear, noticeable marker outline the correct dimensions of the 2 Velcro straps.
3. Note: Usual pen/markers may not be visible on Velcro surface.

Attachment of Velcro straps to bottle compartment:

Using Industrial stapler, firmly staple the 2 strips to one side of one of the longer walls of
compartment. Refer to picture 5a and 5b for correct locations and dimensions.
Using super glue, stick one grip strip for each Velcro strip on opposite/parallel wall. Test first
make sure the Velcro strip comes to contact with grip strip when looped over the bottle
compartment.

Attachment of wheel bearings to base:

Using screws firmly screw the wheel bearings on to base according to drawing number 2
and 8

Attachment of wheel hub to wheels:

Using cup head bolts, screw in the bolts through the appropriate locations of the wheels as
illustrated on drawing 2 and 3

Assemble of axel into wheels:

Thread axel through the each set of parallel wheel bearing.
Bolt both side of wheel with bolts along the axel so wheel is held firmly in place. Please refer
to drawing 2

Attachment of bottle compartment to rover base

Refer to drawing 4 for locations for screws to be drilled through.
According to measurements on drawing 4 plot screw locations on compartment base.
Using Screwdriver, firmly screw bolts through screw locations.
Using nuts, secure the bolts in place

Risk Management Plan

Client: Mars formula

Date: 4/03/2017

Risk Assessment and Management Plan
1.0 Introduction
This document deals with the risk assessment and management of the Mars Rover project.
The plan overs two stages of the project: design and construction.
2.0 Design phase
2.1 Hazard identification
Several hazards were identified for the design stage including: damage to computers
or storage devices, team members getting sick, and conflict amongst team members.
2.2 Risks arising
The potential risks which could arise from the hazards identified above, were all rated
as high. Given this rating, actions must be taken to mitigate them.
3.0 Construction phase
3.0 Hazard identification
The hazards identified for this stage were: unclear instructions, misuse of equipment
and safety guidelines not being followed.
3.2 Risks arising
The potential risks for this stage included injury of team members, damage to
university property and the build team not being able to construct the rover.

Depth Description of Criteria
Professionalism In this criterion, a high level would be evidently demonstrated by the
weekly progress indicating an attendance of 75% and above while covering 4 or more hours
in the weekly group meetings
Time Management- To demonstrate a high level, the tenderer must meet the requirement of a
document demonstrating the tenderer meeting all deadlines of the task assigned and must be
approved and signed by fellow members.
Communication skills The tenderer must demonstrate an email transcript whereby; the
replies are within 24 hours or less.
Capabilities- Staff need to have experience in interpreting AutoCAD designs. Staff contain
experience in safely handling power tools like drill, circular saw. The tenderer must contain a
high school report where it indicates an experience of working with wood, or a referee
approving of work experience in working with wood fabrication.
Risk Management Each team members must be aware of risk that is expected and should
mitigate the risks with suggested plans.
