Early in the year, we invited the residents of Winnipeg to a public meeting for the
Lyndale Drive retaining wall. Information in French was provided on the website
so that residents could access relevant information on this major project in the
official language of their choice.
In the spring, the City of Winnipegs Bilingual Service Centre moved to Accs-Access
Saint-Boniface at 170 Goulet Street, allowing the City to connect with a larger
clientele. Going forward, residents who have an appointment at the Centre de
sant or Manitoba Families will also be able to access municipal services after
their meeting, without even having to step foot outside the building.
The City has also made efforts in its technological innovations, introducing two
initiatives whose French and English components were launched concurrently.
The first was the peggo card, Winnipeg Transits new electronic transit fee col- Matt Allard
lection system, implemented in July. Residents can purchase their peggo card Council Francophone Liaison
in person at the St. Boniface Bilingual Service Centre. The second was the Know
Your Zone app, a free application that can be downloaded in French.
The 2016 annual budget included the creation of a new full-time French Language
Services Manager position, a role which was filled in the fall. As part of her duties,
the Manager will create new French language services policies, ensure that these
policies are followed, as well as liaison with other levels of government and com-
munity groups. From an organizational standpoint, the French Language Services
Manager falls under the Customer Service and Communications Division of the
Office of the CAO.
