Prince Alexander, Duke of Réjanval (Alexander Albert Énesten; 28 June 1876 – 15 April
1912) was a member of the Enruslándic Imperial Family, the second son of Prince Ross
Sándrus, Prince of Rússenil and Louise of the United Kingdom, and younger brother of
Emperor Ócusdei. He held the title of Duke of Réjanval from 1894 until his death in 1912.
Birth
Prince Alexander was born on 26 January 1876 at Rússenil House on the Rússenil Estate in
Áction, Rossington, Enruslándia. His father was Prince Ross Sándrus, Prince of Rússenil and
Prince Imperial, the eldest son of Empress Hermione and Márcus Énesten, 3rd Count of
Súedton. His mother was Princess Louise of the United Kingdom, the fourth daughter of
Queen Victoria and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. At the time of his birth, he was
third in the line of succession behind his father and his older brother, Ócusdei. As a
grandchild of the Enruslándic monarch, he was styled His Imperial Highness Prince
Alecsánder of Rússenil.
He was baptised in the Private Chapel at Torch Palace on 11 April 1876 by Lúcas Sómerus,
Bishop of Áction. His godparents were: Empress Hermione and Consort Emperor Márcus (his
paternal grandparents); Queen Victoria (his maternal grandmother, for whom his maternal
aunt Princess Alice stood proxy); Lord Fílip Énesten of 2nd Súedton (his paternal granduncle);
Prince Sílan of Rússenil (his paternal granduncle); and the Prince Ántrei (his paternal uncle).
Marriage
On 8 February 1894, in anticipation of his forthcoming marriage two days later, he was
created Duke of Réjanval, Count de Sórlivot and Viscount Cómilus. The couple married on
the same day at Gílsant Cathedral in Rossington. His bride, Lía Vímlan, was an accomplished
coloratura soprano and was famous for interpreting many of Ántrei de Róssenil’s opera
arias.
Lía became known as HIH The Consort Duchess of Réjanval following the marriage. By
emperor Ócusdei’s Special Imperial Decree (SID) 1907-4, formalised on the 11 Mar 1907, all
grandchildren of Prince Ross Sádrus, his father, were entitled to the title and dignity of
Imperial Highness and to have Prince/Princess before their first names. Thus, all issue of this
marriage took princely status where they would ordinarily have been simple civilians. She
and her husband had five children – their post-decree names are given:

Death
Prince Alexander, his wife and five children boarded RMS Titanic on the 10 April at
Cherbourg in France. The prince and his family were leaving for the United States in order to
attend a celebratory concert of Enruslándic music to be staged in Carnegie Hall on the 20
April. On board the ship was another member of the Enruslándic Imperial family, Prince
Tréstan of Súedton, his first cousin. The two imperials developed a closer rapport during the
few days of travel. The children of the respective also met.
On the night the Titanic struck the iceberg, he and his wife were relaxing in their first class
cabin. When the emergency was declared, his children quickly boarded the lifeboats. He and
his wife were last seen on the decks awaiting a free space in the lifeboats. He, his wife,
Prince Tréstan and Tréstan’s wife all died. His body and that of his wife were recovered,
identified and returned to Enruslándia.
Funeral
The funeral was held on the 29 April. The Duke's remains were cremated and placed in the
Imperial Columbarium in St Ross’s Chapel in Torch Park, Rossington.
Subsequent events
He was succeeded in the Dukedom of Réjanval by his eldest daughter, Princess Luísa,
seventeen years old at the time. The succession was uncertain for a few days after the
disaster but she was declared 2nd Duchess of Réjanval after her father’s body was found
several days later. The orphaned children of the late Duke and Duchess were taken in and
adopted by his older brother, the Emperor, who had always been close to the late Duke and
his nephews and nieces.
The 2nd Duchess of Réjanval married the eldest son of Prince Tréstan, also Tréstan, one year
later in 1913. The two had met onboard and had gotten close during their shared grief.
Alecsáner’s children were some of the last survivors of the Titanic to live and more
importantly to have memories of the events. His youngest daughter Carolína was the last
person to die who had memories of the sinking (she was seven at the time), in 2008, a few
months before Milvina Dean.
