following questions.

Germs are small forms of life which can be seen only

through a microscope. They are present everywhere.
Just like people, some germs are good, some are bad, and
some are neither good nor bad. We are very lucky that there are
more good germs than bad ones.
Millions of good germs help farmers by turning dead trees,
plants and animals back to soil. Another kind of good germs give

16
food flavor to cheese and butter. Vinegar and ―nata de coco‖ are
made by the action of another kind of germs.
There are also those that help textile manufacturers by
separating the good fiber of abaca and piña from the weak ones
before they can be made into sinamay, linen, ropes, or doormats.
No chemical substitute can do this kind of work.

What is It
Did you know that we note details when we take note of
specific parts of a passage, including the sequence of these
parts? A good researcher is skilled in noting details and also in
selecting details relevant to the main idea. Details usually answer
the questions that start with Who, What, When, Where, and Why.
The answers are usually directly stated in the selection.

17
Here are some tips you must remember in noting significant
details.
1. Significant details in a story center on who, what, where,
when, why, and how. These key words tell you what to look for in
the story.
2. Look back at the selection to find an answer. Do not depend
on your memory.
3. The answer to a question may not use the exact words in
the story. Remember the same idea or event but differently said.
4. When you come to a word you don’t know, look for other
words in the paragraph that explain the unknown word.

Publication Corporation, 1988

What ’s More

Directions: Read the paragraph carefully and then answer the

questions that follow.
As COVID-19 strikes the Philippine nation, people rise
together to counter it. At the forefront of the fight against the
virus are our healthcare workers and various frontliners. Daily,
they face the hazard of infection with their mantra: ―We go to
work for you. Please stay at home for us.‖
Healthcare workers who directly work with COVID-positive
patients are outnumbered; and due to their first-hand exposure,
some staff require quarantine themselves - reducing their
numbers. Another big challenge for frontliners is the lack of
medical supplies including Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs).
Community quarantine and social distancing has not
hindered our kababayans in looking for ways to help with the
battle. Different groups, individuals, classmates, colleagues -
groups big and small - have come together, despite limited

The Sick Lion

An Aesop Fable
There once was a very old lion who lived in a cave. He was
so old, he could no longer go out to hunt for his prey. The lion
thought very hard about his problem. He knew he must eat, and
he was getting very hungry. He came up with a plan.
Many animals passed by the lion’s cave every day. ―Oh, I am
so sick and lonely,‖ the lion would say, loud enough for the

19
animals to hear. ―Won’t some come in and talk to me?‖ Most took
pity on the great beast and entered his cave.
Soon a clever fox came along. The lion asked her to enter.
―Please clever fox, come entertain me with your stories,‖ the lion
said. ―I am all alone in my cave and cannot leave.‖
The fox was too clever to fall the lion’s trick. ―I am not
coming any closer,‖ she said. ―I see many footprints going into
your cave. However, I do not see any footprints coming out. I will
stay right here.‖

When Ana and her family go out for dinner, they always go
to their favorite restaurant. Their favorite restaurant is Italian
inspired. And they usually go once a week. Ana always gets
pesto, and her little sister always gets carbonara. Their parents
like to try different things.
One week when they were getting ready to go out for dinner,
Ana’s father suggested to eat in a different restaurant. Ana and
her sister Gaea groaned. The new restaurant was Filipino

The two are not a fan of grilled food. ―Let’s try it once, and if
you don’t like it, we will go back to your tried and tested favorite
restaurant next week.‖
The two children got into the backseat of the car.
When they arrived at the restaurant, a host met them at the
door, greeted them and led them to a table and said, ―Happy to
serve, we hope that you will love what is on the menu tonight.‖
The restaurant was very nice and their servers as well. The
waiter came out with the food that they ordered. The two
children did not notice how big their smiles were when they saw
the viands being served. There was kare-kare, fried chicken and
pork barbeque.
The family was full in no time. ―I think I have another

Mr. Santos and His Morning Exercises

Mr. Santos was a likeable neighbor that we had for years.
One day, he woke and didn’t feel so well. He decided to go to see
Dr. Ramos to see what problem might be. Dr. Ramos is the best!
Dr. Ramos did some blood work on Mr. Santos. He found
out that his blood contains very little vitamins and minerals. He
recommended that Mr. Santos begin to eat more fruits and
vegetables. In addition, he wanted Mr. Santos to exercise three
times a week for thirty minutes every time.
Mr. Santos wanted to feel better, so he followed the good doctor’s
advice. Every morning he woke up, he followed the same routine.
First, he ate a grapefruit and drank a glass of water. He would
then walk two miles. He would end off with a full body stretch.
Then he would ride his bike to work.

As months went on, Mr. Santos felt a ton better. He began

to help his wife prune their garden every night after work. As
form of payment, his wife would always make a healthy dinner
for him.

Eating Healthy
Ethan loved eating chicken nuggets, pizza, fries, and
burgers. For drinks, he always liked milk teas, cola or sugary
drinks. The sweeter it was the more he liked it. His mother said.
"You eat too much sugar. Look at what you're eating for
breakfast." Ethan looked at the food in front of him. He had juice,
Rainbow Sugar Krispies, and a donut.
He smiled and took a bite of his glazed jelly-filled donut. He
chewed and then stopped when his teeth began to ache. "You
have to go to the dentist if you're getting cavities.‖ Mom said.
"Why do the delicious things have to be bad for me? I can’t eat
broccoli forever. I am not a rabbit." Ethan replied.
"I know. But you don't get all the vitamins and minerals you
need from the stuff you like to eat. All that food is sugar and fat.
You need good food for healthy teeth, eyes, and even your brain!"
His mother explained "If you can't start making healthy choices
more often, I won't buy any junk food or sweets to keep in the
house for snacks." Ethan frowned.
"Snacks are occasional treats, not your regular meals. I
should have bought more healthy breakfast foods for you.
Tomorrow you will have eggs, toast without jam, bacon, some
fresh fruit, and a glass of milk," His mom explained. "That
doesn't sound too bad" Ethan replied.
―I am not going to put all these sweets in your lunch
anymore, either. You will get yogurt, raisins, or fresh fruit for
your dessert in your lunch, okay?" Mom explained. Ethan did not
want to agree. But his mom's suggestion wasn't really that bad.
Maybe his teeth wouldn't hurt so much anymore, either. He
really did not like trips to the dentist.

Wearing a Mask
Sometimes adults and kids need to wear masks to protect
other people from getting sick. This might be something new for
me!
Masks might feel kind of uncomfortable at first, but I will
get used to it! Even when I wear a mask it is still important to
stay 6 feet away from other people. It is still okay to touch and
hug my family. I usually don’t need to wear a mask at home.
If I go to a store or to an appointment, I need to wear a
mask. If I go somewhere with my family and there are other
people around, I should wear a mask. A mask can protect other
people if I cough or sneeze. It will also protect me from others! It
is still important to wash my hands or use hand sanitizer.

34
Doctors are working hard to find ways to make COVID-19
go away. Once it is gone, I won’t need to wear a mask anymore.
Wearing a mask is different but it will be okay!

What is It

Did you know that sequencing refers to the identification of

the components of a story, such as the beginning, middle, and
end? It is also the ability to retell the events within a given text in
the order in which they occurred.
The ability to sequence events in a text is a key comprehension
strategy, especially for narrative texts. Finding meaning in a text
depends on the ability to understand and place the details, the
sequence of events, within some larger context—the beginning,

35
middle, and end of a story. The ordering of events in a story,
along with connecting words such as once upon a time, then,
later, afterwards, and in the end, are good examples of textual
features, an understanding of which gives the reader a way of
integrating the story's individual parts into its larger framework—
and thereby understanding the author's purpose.

Why is it Important to Wash my Hand?
Right now, some germs are called Coronavirus makes a lot
of people sick. Germs can be passed on other people who are
well, then they can become sick too.
One of the ways I can stay healthy and not become sick is
by washing my hands before and after I touch things, including
my face. I must also wash my hands carefully after I cough,
sneeze, and use the bathroom. This will help to keep the germs
away so I stay healthy. When I wash my hands, I need to use
soap and count to 20 while I wash. I could even sing Happy
Birthday to help me know how long to wash for. When I have
washed my hands, it is very important that I dry them properly. I
can use a dryer or a paper towel which I can put in the trash
when I am finished.
I will try hard to remember to wash and dry my hands a lot
when I am at home and at school. I will try to keep the
Coronavirus germs away.

Thermometers
Harold was not feeling well. In fact he had a fever. He
decided to go the hospital. When the nurse came in, they checked
his height and weight. Then, they checked his temperature.
The thing was, this thermometer the nurse used was very
different from the one his mom used at home. His mom used a
white plastic one with a silver tip. He put the tip under his
tongue and sat around until it beeped. Then he read the digital
display to see his temperature. This one was different. The nurse
took a beige wand style thermometer with what looked like a
suction cup at the end and ran across his forehead. It beeped
and showed the temperature in just a second or two.
―Wow!‖ Harold exclaimed. ―That’s cool, because it’s so fast.‖
The nurse grinned at him. ―Yup, it’s quick and painless.‖ She
agreed, frowning at the reading of his temperature.
Harold was suddenly curious. ―Are there any other kind of
thermometers?‖ She nodded sagely. ―We used to use the glass
ones long ago, but they took a long time under the tongue and
could break. Now we mostly used this forehead checking ones.
They’re fast but not most accurate.‖
―What is the most accurate then?‖
―Rectal temperature.‖ She informed him.
―What’s that?‖
