Introduction
Introduction SOLIDWORKS Composer
About This The goal ofthis course is to teach you how to use the SOLIDWORKS
Course Composer software to create 20 and 3D output from CAD design data.
SOLIDWORKS Composer is such a robust and feature rich application
that it is impractical to cover every minute detail and aspect of the
software and still have the book be a reasonable length. Therefore, the
focus will be on the fundamental skills and concepts ceiilral to the
successful use of SOLlDWORKS Composer, You shollld View the
training course manual as a supplement to, not a replacement for, the
system documentation and onrline help. Once you have developed a
good foundation in basic skills, you can refer to the onrlilie help for
information on less frequently used command options.
Objectives Tlie objectives of this course include:
Laboratory Laboratory exercises give you the opportunity to apply and practice the
Exercises material covered during the lecture/demonstration ponion of the
course. They are designed to represent typical Situations you may
encounter in your use ofthe SOLIDWORKS Composer application
You should note that many students work at ditrerent paces. Ifyou
finish ahead ofyour classmates, we encourage you to practice the
material independently or assist your classmates who may be
struggling
Windows The screen shots in this manual were made using the SOLIDWORKS
sofiware running a mixture ofwindows“7 7 and windows it). You may
notice slight ditl‘erences in the appearance ot‘the menus and windows.
These differences do not affect the performance of the software.

Lesson 2 SOLIDWORKS Composer
Getting Started
What is the SOLIDWORKS Composer revolutionizes the way you create product
SOLIDWORKS deliverables. Intelligent views and interactive content convey complex
Composer product procedures using a minimal amount oftext.
Application? SOLIDWORKS Composer publishes 2D and 3D output from 3D CAD
data. The data can come from many 3D CAD systems. You do not need
any CAD knowledge to use SOLIDWORKS Composer.
SOLIDWORKS Composer exports industryasmndard tile formats,
including:
a 2D vector graphics images: SVG and CGM
- 2r) higheresolution raster images: TIFF, 1m PNG and BMP
- 3D interactive content: PDF, HTML, and AVI
SOLIDWORKS Composer permits you to document the product while
it may still be incomplete. You later update all deliverables without the
need to rework them. SOLIDWORKS Composer requires no
programming skills or other specialized capabilities to publish any of
its output formats.

I Viewport
The viewpon is the “stage" on which the application displays the
actors. This is sometimes referred to as the graphics area.
I Views
Views represent a snapshot ofthe actors. Views capture the noneneiitral
properties and positions ofall the geometry actors and collaborative
actors. Views also record the orientation ofthe camera, the visibility of
the actors, and the noneneutral properties ofthe viewpon.
Note For those with CAD knowledge, note that the views in SOLIDWORKS
Composer are different from CAD views. Views in SOLIDWORKS
Composer include much more than the orientation of the camera.

order ofthe actors in SOLIDWORKS assemblies matches the CAD
system. Click Alphabetic sort it to list the actors alphabetically.
Select the check mark next to the actor's name to show it in the
viewport: clear the check mark to hide the actor, Rightrclick an actor to
access functions such as copy, paste, and delete.
Scenarios
Describes the animation ot‘a set of actors. Under certain circumstances,
it is possible to use scenarios from one group of actors on another
group of actors so you do not have to recreate an animation. See
Scenarios on page 157.
Views
Lists the views in the file. This is useful for switching views while the
Assembly tab is active. More commonly, you use the Wews tab. See
Views Tali on page l8.
Layers
This function is used mainly by actors that have been imported from
the CATIA v4 application. The imponed layers control the visibility of
the actors. lfyou do not have layers imported from CATIA V4 in your
SOLIDWORKS Composer file, then use views to control the visibility
of the actors.

supported CAD systems
Selection sels
Lists selection sets of geometry actors. It is useful to create a selection
set for actors that you plan to select repeatedly as a group. See
Selecimns on page 98.
Note The Assembly tah shows selections containing only geometry actors.
The Collaboration tab shows selections containing collaborative
actors or a combination of geometry and collaborative actors.
Holspos
Hotspots are groups ofactors, similar to selection sets, with shared
highlight, tooltip, and link properties that can supersede those oflhe
individual actors. Their primary purpose is for defining custom

Creating Cove! and Detail lrrrages
Overview ln this lesson, you create two raster graphics images. One ofthe images
might be used on the cover ora manual and the other image employs
demil circles to highlight cenain actors.
Views views represent a snapshot orthe actors. views capture the nonrneutml
properties and positions of all the geometry actors and collaborative
actors. views also record the orientation of the camera, the visibility of
the actors, and the nonrneutral properties ofthe viewport.
Creating views with the proper appearance and location ctfall the actors
is important for creating good 2D output. once your views are set up
properly, then the process of getting good ZD output shrinks to setting
the proper output options.
There are special types ofviews, called custom views, that capture a
subset ofthe demils ofa particular view. See Custom Vlewx on page 71.
One type ofa custom view is a camera view. Camera views only
capture the camera orientation and zoom level.

Custom Views Many of the views that you have created so far recorded all nonrneuual
properties nfthe current viewport. 1hese “nomin! views" record the
nunrneutral pusitinn and properties ofthe actors, the camera position
and zoom scale, and so on.
Custom views, sometimes called intelligent views, record only specitie
properties ofviews. When you apply an intelligent view to a normal
view, only the specific properties are applied. Camera views, for
example, are a type of custom view that records only the camera
position. You can apply this custom view to several normal views to
make the camera position the same in all ofthem. Custom views appear
in the views tah, hut they have a shaded overlay to indicate they are an
intelligent view.
Next, we create custom views to capture the exploded and collapsed
positions ofseveral groups oractors.

Lesson 5 SOLIDWORKS Composer
Creating Bills Mustensls
Overview ln this lesson, we create three views with Bills orMateriats and
callouts. Then, we puhlish the views as vector graphics tiles.
Bill of Materials A bill of materials (BOM) is a list nfthe components that make up an
assembly. Another common name for this is a pans list. A BOM can be
used by a company to keep track ofthe materials needed to create a
product. Also, a BOM can be used by a consumer to make sure that
everything was included with a product they purchased.
ln SOLIDWORKS Composer, BOMS include three columns by
default: ID, description, and quantity. You can add to or reorder these
Columns.
BOM IDs BOM IDs are the unique identifiers assigned to the various geometry
actors in an assembly. BOM le appear in the BOM and also in
callouts, or balloons, to identify the parts. You can assign BOM le
individually to one actor at a time or in a batch to selected geometry
actors.
Note BOM IDs are VieWrspeCific. You can assign a different BOM ID to the
same Component in difi'erent views.
Note lfyour SOLIDWORKS assembly contains a BOM, you can import that
BOM when you open the assembly in SOLIDWORKS Composer.

properties such as the actor‘s name. You also have the opportunity to

Location Keys Location keys record the location ofacmrst The location ot‘the actors
describes how the actors are exploded or collapsed. Location keys
control the location ofboth geometry and collaborative actors.
Several location keys can exist at the same time. At any time, a key can
control the location nfseveral actors. You use filters to idenlify the keys
for specific actors. See Fillers on page I28.
Auto-Keys When Auto-keys is selected “1 the Timeline toolbar, the application
records a key at the current position of the Timebar when you change
the location ofan actor. For example, ifthe Timebar is at 3 seconds and
you move an actor, Auto-keys places a key to record its location.
Using Auto-keys makes it easier to create an animation but remember
to use with caution. If you move an actor to get a closer look at what is
behind it, Auto—keys places a key at the current position ofthe Timebar
to record the actor's new location. So remember that Auto-keys
records all location and property changes.
118
someoRKs Composer Lesson 3
creating an Animation
Also, you should note that Auto-keys does not record the status quo. If
you want an actor to move from 5 to 7 seconds, you must manually set
a location key at 5 seconds. Auto-keys cannot record that the actor
must stay put until 5 second“
General Procedure This procedure shows the steps you most commonly use to animate a

Updating SOLIDWORKS Composeririies
When you update from one assembly to the next, the NetGuid ofevery
part must match for SOLIDWORKS Composer to consider the part as
changed. If SOLIDWORKS Composer encounters a new NetGuid in
the updated assembly, then it treats that as a new part. If
SOLIDWORKS Composer cannot find a match for an existing
NetGuld m the updated assembly, then it treats that as a deleted part
and removes it from the assembly.
Warnings for the As you are starting to see, using consistent tile names and CAD
Update Function structure are very important for the update function. In addition, there
are other things to take into account to make your update process go
smoothly.
I When you open the CAD file into SOLIDWORKS Composer, use
the same import settings for the original and the updated assembly.
For example, lt‘you select Merge file into one actor per part for
the original assembly, but not for the updated assembly, then the
update process will fail because the Nethids will be different. Set
the Import profile on the Open dialog box to SOLlDWORKS
(default) every time unless you have a reason to change the
settings.
a The names ofthe original CAD files (assemblies, subrasselnblies,
and pans) cannot be changed. If you clear Merge file into one
actor per part, then the names ofthe bodies in a multlbody part
cannot be changed either.
I The actors cannot be rearranged in the Assembly tab. They cannot
be dragged to a different subrasselnbly or cannot be inserted into a
new assembly group. The update function will try to recreate the
original CAD structure. Recall in Lesson 11: Adding Spt’ciat when
in Animalitms that we created an assembly group to facilitate
compound motion. Ifyou update that assembly, the update fimction
will try to recreate the original CAD structure, thereby breaking the
compound motion animation.
I Actors that you merge into an assembly using the Merge into the
current document option on the Open dialog box are removed
during the update process. This is hecause their NetGulds do not
exist in the updated assembly and are treated as old, to be deleted,
pans. Recall in Lc tan 5: Creating Additional Exploded Virwr that
we merged a retai ng ring tool into the assembly. If you update
that assembly, the update function will delete the retaining ring
tool.
I Detail vtews that you create with the Digger, the High Resolution
workshop. or the Technical Illustration workshop do not update.
You must manually update the content in the detail views.
in this lesson, we update the holder with changes in the CAD tiles.

punishing [mm sounwonxs Campaser
Overview So far we have covered the basics of publishing files. You saved images
and animations as m; raster graphics images. SVG vector graphics
images, and AV] animations.
[n this lesson, we learn how to publish to PDF and HTML documents
and puhlish inside Microsofi Word. This will allow us to include 3D
content that the user can interact with while viewing documents. We
customize the templates and add ActiveX code to control the output in
the various formats.
Preparing a File There are some things you may want to consider before sharing files
for Publishing for viewing with sounwonKs Composer Player: number ot‘tiles,
security ot files, and rights within SOLIDWORKS Composer Player.
I Number Dl files. Ifyou used SOLIDWORKS Composer product
files with .smngl, .smgGeom, ismgSce, and .smgView files, as
well as thumbnail Images, then you can save a SOLIDWORKS
Composer product as a .smg file to combine all the product files
into a single file. This makes it easier to distribute the content.
- Security of tiles. When you publish 3D data, viewers may be able
to measure the geometry. However, you may have proprietary data
that you do not want them to be able to measure. SOLIDWORKS
Composer includes tools that distort the geometry to hinder viewers
efforts to measure the files. Also, you can add a password or
expiration date for the file to add another layer ofseciirity.
I Rights within SDLIDWDRKS Composer Playeri When you
publish with the intention orviewing in SOLIDWORKS Composer
Player, you can determine what rights the viewer \Vlil have. For
example, you can allow Viewers to measure, annotate, View the
assembly tree, and so on.
Note The steps in this section are optional. You can share a SOLIDWORKS
Composer product without any security or rights ifynu choose. You do
not have to do the tollowing steps to be able to publish to PDF and
HTML and publish inside Mlcmsofl Word.
To begin this lesson, we will prepare a SOLIDWORKS Composer
product for publishing.
