General marking instructions

These notes to examiners are intended only as guidelines to assist marking. They are not offered
as an exhaustive and fixed set of responses or approaches to which all answers must rigidly
adhere.
Good ideas or angles not offered here should be acknowledged and rewarded as appropriate.
Similarly, answers which do not include all the ideas or approaches suggested here should be
rewarded appropriately.

Of course, some of the points listed will appear in weaker papers, but are unlikely to be
developed.

1. Text A and text B

This question asks candidates to compare a letter from NK Narayana Murthy to his adult daughter,
written for and published in Legacy: Letters from eminent parents to their daughter, 2013, to a
cartoon titled “Constant”, created by Christopher Grady and published on the Lunarbaboon website
in September 2014.

An adequate to good analysis will:

• note that while both texts present fathers engaging with their children in a manner that reflects
both change and constancy within the family unit over time, the letter, while open in nature,
offers a specific account of a particular family while the comic explores the topic in a much
broader fashion
• comment on the audience and purpose of the two text, seeing both the public and the personal
nature of the letter to exhort a daughter as she embarks on life as a wife and mother and the
more generic approach of the comic to amuse a wider audience and inspire reflection on the
cyclical nature of life
• explore some of the characteristics of the letter: the use of first person, the focus on the father
and his perceptions and thinking, the nature of the letter which is largely explanatory of events
in the past in order to underscore the values the father and mother hoped to impart to their
children (and the implication that the daughter will pass these values on to her daughter)
• explore some of the characteristics of the comic: the constancy of the couch and the book
(perhaps a family album) juxtaposed to the shifting nature of the human beings, the generic
portrayal of a father, mother, and children until the son’s replacement of the father on the couch
with his daughter, the dialogue, some of the tiny details in the drawings.

A good to excellent analysis may also:

• offer a more detailed, in-depth and balanced comparison of the two text types, discussing the
levels of specificity and ambiguity found in each, and how that is suitable for their respective
audiences
• offer a more thorough and detailed analysis of the two texts and how their various techniques
and approaches engage the readers in different ways: e.g. in A, the use of balanced and
parallel syntax, the use of detail, the shifts of tone as the father recounts his thinking as a father
and grandfather, the formal nature of the letter, especially at the end, which underscores the
father’s concern that a parent be a guide and appropriate role-model for a child; in B, the
disappearance of figures to the right as life moves on, the changing details in the drawings
indicating the passage of time and how they add to a humorous tone (changing sizes and
shapes, body language, facial expression, hair, mobile phone)
• consider how both texts contribute to the reader’s understanding of both the specific struggles
of raising children and the cyclical nature of this process and of life in general
• draw some conclusions regarding how the divergent text types shape meaning: one in a fairly
detailed and introspective way, the other in few words and simple drawings
• comment on the cultural contexts and the presentation of family structure and of gender roles in
the two texts.

2. Text C and text D

This question asks candidates to compare a news article from USA TODAY, 8 Dec 2017,
regarding the impact of climate change on a northern Norwegian town, to an entry posted on the
MOSJ website under the auspices of the Norwegian Polar Institute, as updated on 16 March 2018,
tracking the melting of permafrost in the same region of Norway and its consequences.

An adequate to good analysis will:

• note that while both texts are concerned with the consequences of climate change on the
Norwegian island of Svalbard, Text A focuses on the human angle and B takes a more
scientific approach to the common topic
• comment on the audience of the two texts, recognizing that the news article appeals to a
broader, lay audience, while the MOSJ website caters to those specifically interested in the
science and changing climate of Svalbard
• comment on the purpose of the two text types, seeing that the key purpose of the news article
is to make readers aware of some of the lesser known impacts of global warming, while the
purpose of the MOSJ article is to serve as a source of up-to-date factual and scientific
information
• comment on some of the characteristics of the news article and their effects on the reader: the
use of an intriguing title, the use of visuals to emphasize the immediate setting and its
darkness, the geographic location of the town, the paradox of a town where the inhabitants
wish for colder weather, the impact on a specific person, the use of quotations from both
experts and citizens, details of the human cost of the warming temperatures, and emotive word
choices (e.g. “havoc”, “frustration and anger”)
• comment on some of the characteristics of the MOSJ website and this particular entry: the
visual of a scientific tracking device in a snow-covered region, the logical division of the
information into four parts, the use of graphs to provide specific details to the investigative
reader, the summary comments and explanations for the more casual reader.

A good to excellent analysis may also:

• offer a more detailed, in-depth and balanced comparison of the two texts, commenting on the
news article’s focus on the impacts on human life, and the MOSJ website’s focus on monitoring
changes to the permafrost and reporting the effects of its thawing on the natural world and on
local infrastructure
• offer a more thorough and detailed analysis of the two texts, clearly showing how choice of
style and technique impact the reader and reflect the audiences being addressed: in A, for
instance, the first person account of the reporter and the somewhat positive ending of the last
paragraph; in B the use of impersonal third person language which puts the emphasis on the
data, as well as the specific analysis of data regarding the melting of permafrost and its
potential impacts
• analyse how both texts establish credibility: for instance, the mention of the scientists’ and
residents’ names in A, the statistics, graphs and factual tone in B, the website headings in both
• draw some conclusions regarding how these two texts shape meaning in different ways for
different readers on the same point of concern.
