L’Impératif

(The Imperative Mood)

 L’impératif (the imperative) is used to give orders or advice to one or more people.
 The imperative mood only exists in the tu, nous and the vous form.
 The imperative mood is conjugated in the same way as the present tense, but the subject
pronouns are omitted.

 Par exemple :

 Regular Verbs

1. Parler (To speak)

Tu parles Parle! (Speak!)

Nous parlons Parlons! (Let’s speak!)

Vous parlez Parlez! (Speak!)

2. Visiter (To visit)

Tu visites Visite! (Visit!)

Nous visitons Visitons! (Let’s visit!)

Vous visitez Visitez! (Visit!)

(Note : In the ‘tu’ form of verbs that have ‘es’ in the ending, we cut the s from the ending. Check the
above mentioned example.)

4. Finir (To finish)

Tu finis Finis! (Finish!)

Nous finissons Finissons! (Let’s finish)

Vous finissez Finissez! (Finish!)

5. Remplir (To fill)

6. Vendre (To sell)

Tu vends Vends! (Sell!)

Nous vendons Vendons! (Let’s sell!)

 Irregular Imperative Forms :

1. Être : To be

Tu es Sois! (Be!)
Nous sommes Soyons! (Let’s be!)

Vous êtes Soyez! (Be!)

2. Avoir : To have

Tu as Aie! (Have!)

Nous avons Ayons! (Let’s have!)

Vous avez Ayez! (Have!)

3. Aller : To go

Tu vas Va! (Go!)

Nous allons Allons! (Let’s go!)

Vous allez Allez! (Go!)

4. Vouloir : To wish/To want

Tu veux Veuille ! (Wish!/Kindly!)

Nous voulons Veuillons ! (Let’s wish!)

5. Savoir : To know

Tu sais Sache! (Know!)

 Negative of Imperative Mood :

The negative form of the imperative mood is formed by adding ne or n’ before the verb and pas
after the verb.

• Avoir (To have)

N’aie pas! (Don’t have!)

N’ayons pas! (Let’s not have!)

N’ayez pas! (Don’t have!)

• Visiter (To visit)

Ne visite pas! (Don’t visit!)

Ne visitons pas! (Let’s not visit!)

Ne visitez pas! (Don’t visit!)
