This edition is based on facsimile copies of the following two 16th century prints:
My primary source was a), which uses the clefs G2, C2, C3 and F3. Bar lines follow b). I have
transposed the piece down a whole tone to make it more convenient to sing and to fit it to the lute part
for a lute in G. Accidentals given within the staff stem from source a). The accidentals given above
the staff are considered "musica ficta" in a), but can be derived from source b), because the lute
tablature uniquely specifies accidentals.
Source b) gives two lute intavolations: one in D and on in F (assuming a lute in G). As the version in
D is too low to work with mixed voices, I have based my lute accompaniment accompaniment on the
version in F, which I have made more consistent with the voice parts. Even though the lute part is
optional, it enhances the music in my opinion, especially when the piece is sung one per part.
