AUA COUNCIL 2022-2025 WOMEN IN ARCHITECTURE

 AFRICA UNION OF ARCHITECTS
Female students in architecture face unique
challenges, and it’s important to create a space for
them to share their experiences and support each
other. In this webinar, a panel of female students
and a female lecturer from different regions of Africa
will be discussing these issues and propose how to
overcome them. Having a speaker from each region
and different cadre would help to give a more
holistic view of the issues of gender equality and
equity in the architecture industry in Africa. It would
also allow for a more diverse range of perspectives.
The webinar will start with a brief presentation by the
first speaker which will focus on the role of
education, mentorship, and role models in inspiring
inclusion and equity. The speaker will also give the
importance of creating policies and practices that
promote equity and inclusion, and the impact that it
can have on the built environment in Africa. The
speaker will also highlight some examples of women
and girls who have made an impact in the
architecture industry in Africa.

Les étudiantes en architecture sont confrontées à
des défis uniques et il est important de créer un
espace où elles peuvent partager leurs expériences
et se soutenir mutuellement. Dans ce webinaire, un
panel d'étudiantes et une enseignante de
différentes régions d'Afrique discuteront de ces
problèmes et proposeront comment les surmonter.
Avoir un conférencier de chaque région et des
cadres différents contribuerait à donner une vision
plus globale des questions d'égalité et d'équité
entre les sexes dans l'industrie de l'architecture en
Afrique. Cela permettrait également un éventail de
perspectives plus diversifié.
Le webinaire débutera par une brève présentation
du premier conférencier qui se concentrera sur le
rôle de l'éducation, du mentorat et des modèles
pour inspirer l'inclusion et l'équité. L'orateur
soulignera également l'importance de créer des
politiques et des pratiques qui favorisent l'équité et
l'inclusion, ainsi que l'impact que cela peut avoir sur
l'environnement bâti en Afrique. L'orateur mettra
également en lumière quelques exemples de
femmes et de filles qui ont eu un impact dans
l'industrie de l'architecture en Afrique.

WEAAM TAHIR,
Third-year student at the University of Khartoum,
pursuing a degree in Architecture, is deeply
passionate about architecture and the arts. Hailing
from Sudan, Weaam is not only dedicated to her
studies but also actively involved in various aspects
of the architectural field. Alongside her pursuit of a
degree in Architecture, Weaam explores her
creativity through different artistic mediums,
showcasing her versatility and imagination.
As a union worker, she contributes to various
committees, leveraging her organizational skills and
passion for collaboration to make a difference. With
experience in organizing architectural competitions
and being part of a team that earned an honorable
mention, Weaam demonstrates her commitment to
excellence and innovation in both academia and
the professional realm. Her drive to create
meaningful contributions to the world of architecture
and art fuels her journey as she continues to evolve
and inspire.

BERENICE ILONDO,
Professional Architect working in the Democratic
Republic of Congo. Specialized in the in-depth study
of projects, project management as well as the
development and analysis of tender documents, she
has 6 years of experience in the profession.
Determined, meticulous and familiar with the
teamwork coordination, she is active in the
profession’s protection and is a member of
associations that defend its cause by participating in
several activities related to it.
Active member of the Association of Women
Architects of Congo as well as of the Gender
Commission of the National Order of Architects of
Congo; she held the position of General Secretary of
the Electoral Commission of the Association of
Women Architects of Congo 2023 and is Secretary of
the Gender Commission of the National Order of
Architects of Congo. To her credit, we can mention
the organization of events, the intervention in
conferences and active involvement in the
promotion of the profession of architect practiced
by woman.

Démocratique du Congo. Spécialisée dans l'étude
approfondie de projets, la gestion de projets ainsi

d'offres, elle possède 6 ans d'expérience dans le
métier. Déterminée, minutieuse et familière avec la
coordination du travail d’équipe, elle est active
dans la protection de la profession et est membre
d’associations qui défendent sa cause en
participant à plusieurs activités qui y sont liées.

; elle a occupé le poste de Secrétaire Générale de
la Commission Electorale de l'Association des

DR NNEZI UDUMA-OLUGU,
FNIA B.Sc (First |Class), M.Sc (Arch/UNN), M.L.A
(Manitoba), Ph.D. (Unilag), FNIA, FSLAN, ASLA,
AARCHES.
A First Class, chartered architect and a Gold medal
landscape architect, Dr. Nnezi Uduma-Olugu is an
Associate Professor, a member of NIA and ARCON,
and a Canadian Commonwealth Scholar, who has
previously served as the Vice President of Society of
Landscape Architects of Nigeria (SLAN). She is a
Fellow of NIA, SLAN as well as a member of the
American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA)
and AARCHES (Association of Architectural
Educators).
A former Head, Department of Architecture, Unilag,
She, Along with others, pioneered the Master of
Landscape Architecture programme – a first of its
kind in sub-Saharan Africa, and was once a
Coordinator of the programme. She has written
three books on landscape architecture and co-
authored a book on marriage. With more than 3
decades of practice in both fields, she is widely
published in both local and international journals.
She is enthusiastic about publicising landscape
architecture, impacting lives and mentorship. Dr
Nnezi’s area of specialization, apart from Biophillic
Architecture and design, is landscape, urban
recreation and tourism studies.

Architecte agréé de première classe et architecte
paysagiste médaillé d'or, le Dr Nnezi Uduma-Olugu
est professeur agrégée, membre de la NIA et de
l'ARCON et boursier du Commonwealth canadien,
qui a auparavant été vice-président de la Society of
Landscape Architects du Nigéria (SLAN). Elle est
membre du NIA, du SLAN ainsi que de l'American
Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) et de
l'AARCHES (Association of Architectural Educators).
Ancienne directrice du département d'architecture
d'Unilag, elle a été, avec d'autres, la pionnière du
programme de maîtrise en architecture de paysage,
le premier du genre en Afrique subsaharienne, et a
été autrefois coordinatrice du programme. Elle a
écrit trois livres sur l'architecture paysagère et est co-
auteur d'un livre sur le mariage. Avec plus de trois
décennies de pratique dans les deux domaines, elle
est largement publiée dans des revues locales et
internationales. Elle est enthousiaste à l’idée de faire
connaître l’architecture paysagère, d’avoir un
impact sur la vie et le mentorat. Le domaine de
spécialisation du Dr Nnezi, outre l’architecture et le
design biophiliques, concerne les études du
paysage, des loisirs urbains et du tourisme.

AR. MIRANDA NKUNIKA MULAGA
Chairperson: Architects & Quantity Surveyors Board
Malawi
Miranda is a practising Architect. She runs a
consultancy called Green Arch Designs. She is the
current Chairperson of the Architects and Quantity
Surveyors Board and works very closely with the
University (Malawi University of Business and Applied
Sciences) to ensure that the University delivers within
the set standards.
She also frequently delivers lecturers and participate
in design crits at the University to both
Undergraduate and Honors degree students.
Architect Miranda is a recipient of the Woman of
Substance Award (2023) under the Category of
Malawi Institute of Architects- Plan International and
Pan African Learning and Growth Network. In 2023,
she was named among the 100 Inspiring Women in
Malawi by the Wealth Magazine.

Miranda est architecte de profession. Elle dirige le
