The cervical rachidial segment supports and orients the cephalic extremity
in space. lt is the most mobile portion of the rachis, and thus the most
vulnerable. oarticular in trauma.
The author, by comparing the first two cervical vertebrae with the lower
cervical rachis, distinguishes the five functions of the cervical column: the
functions of strut (anthropological evolution, the acquisition of cervical lordosis),
of resilience (axial constraints taken mainly by the discocorporal complex,
mechanisms of cervical herniated disk), of flexibility (the cervical segment is
most mobile of the rachis), of protection of the bone marrow, the roots and
the vertebral artery, and of very rich nociceptive information interlinked with
the shoulder region (recapitulation of the four types of pain: nociceptive,
neurogenic, neurogenic referral from the posterior articulation starting point,
and psychogenic).
