EXPLAIN

Children learns best when the significant adults in their lives, parents, teachers, and other family and
community members work together to encourage and support them. This basic fact should be a
guiding principle as we think about how schools should be organized and how children should be
taught. Schools alone cannot address all of a child’s developmental needs.
The need for a strong partnership between schools and families to educate children may seem like
common sense. Teachers and parents were often neighbors and found many occasions to discuss a
child’s progress. Children heard the message from teachers and parents and understood that they were
expected to uphold the same standards at home and at school.
As a society has become more complex and demanding, though, these relationships have all too often
fallen by the wayside. Neither educators nor parents have enough time to get to know one another and
establish working relationships on behalf of children.

FAMILY
 The first educators of their children and they continue to influence their children’s learning
and development during the school year and long afterwards.
SCHOOL
 Responsible in helping to nurture and teach future generations and families trust schools to
provide educational foundations for their children’s future. At the same time, schools need to
recognize the primary role of the family in education.

FAMILY –SCHOOL PARTNERSHIP

 Collaborative relationships and activities involving school staff, parents and other family
members of students at a school. Effective partnerships are based on mutual trust and respect,
and shared responsibility for the education of the children and young people at the school.
 Family involvement in schools is therefore central to high quality education and is part of the
core business of schools
 The aim of Family-School and Community Partnership is to encourage sustainable and
effective partnerships between all members of the school, community, including teachers,
families and students.

IMPORTANCE OF FAMILY-SCHOOL PARTNERSHIP

1. View each partner as making equally valuable contributions, while respecting different
contributions.
2. Respect student needs and preferences
3. Address barriers to involvement in schools by families, in particular Indigenous Families and
actively help previously uninvolved families to become involved
4. Create better programs, opportunities and learning for students
5. Give families appropriate opportunities to contribute to school decision-making and
governance; and contribute to professional satisfaction to principals and teachers
6. Children can get many academic and social benefits

KEY DIMENSIONS OF FAMILY-SCHOOL PARTNERSHIP

The Family-School Partnerships Framework identifies seven dimensions as guidelines for planning
partnership activities. These seven dimensions are:
1. Communicating
2. Connecting learning at home and at school
3. Building community and identity
4. Recognizing the role of the family
5. Consultative decision-making
6. Collaborating beyond the school
7. Participating

WAYS TO INVOLVED AT YOUR CHILD’S PRIMARY SCHOOL
There are often lots of opportunities to be involved in primary schools, because they tend to be
smaller than secondary schools. We can get involved by:
1. Volunteering – for example, helping with classroom activities like reading groups or
excursions or in the school canteen
2. PTA/HPTA – attending parent groups or committees, for example, school councils, parents
and citizen committees
3. Extra Co-Curricular Activities – working on school fundraising, programs, events
