WHAT I NEED TO KNOW

Can you imagine the world without colors, lines and shapes?
Every time we go out of our home, we see colors that make us see the
beauty of nature and lines that define the shape of objects. When we
think of the good things we get from these images, we are able to
develop good thoughts and share better words with our friends.

This module allows you to develop the ability to read, write and
interpret visual images. This lesson relates to art and design but its
application is on communication. This is all about language,
communication and interaction. Not only has this lesson enriched
your understanding of media but your enjoyment too.

This module includes three lessons. These are:

Lesson 1: Interpreting the meaning suggested in visual media through a

focus on visual elements: colors, lines, and shapes.
Lesson 2: Interpreting the meaning suggested in visual media through
a focus on visual elements: gestures, lighting, and symbols.
Lesson 3: Interpreting the meaning suggested in visual media through
a focus on visual elements: angle, gaze, framing, and
distance.

At the end of the module, you will be able to interpret visual

media through a focus on visual elements such as colors, lines, and
shapes.

After studying this module, you should be able to:

• describe a painting, picture, cartoons, diagram, and

illustration according to visual elements;
• decode meaning of visual images through the visual elements
such as lines, shapes, and colors;
• write a caption that tells about the meaning of the visual
images seen in the varied activities; and
• show interest in doing the activities.

8
WHAT I KNOW

Before you begin studying this module, take this pre-test to find out how
much you already know about interpreting visual images.

Take a look at this painting and answer the questions below. Use
complete sentences to give a description of what you see.

Image 1

1.What shade of colors are found in the painting?

2.What lines do you see that seem to move?

3.Which one do you feel while looking at the painting?

joy fear anger excitement happiness sadness trouble

4.Do the shapes show repetition? What shapes do you see?

5.Does the painting show peace or disorder? How can you tell?

Now that you are able to answer all the questions, then you have
an understanding of the images that you see. Even without texts or
words, you have described the images and have related them with your
feelings. Write a caption that will describe the image here:

WHAT’S IN

Have you tried looking at a diagram but did not understand

because no text could be read? Was it confusing because you were not
familiar with the image?

Maybe the details were not enough. I hope the images below are
familiar to you. Match the visual clues in Column A with the images in
Column B. Write the letter of the correct answer.

10
WHAT’S NEW

There are questions that come to our minds when we look at

images such as:
• How do we understand images?
• What can we see in them?
• How does it make you feel looking at the images?
• What is the image trying to tell us?”

Then we begin to examine the details of what we are looking at.

Let us learn these words so it will be easy for you to proceed to

the next activities.

A. Directions: From the box below, pick out the appropriate word being
described in each sentence.

Shapes Lines Colors

1. These are geometric figures that you recognize in

the image. Figures that repeat give meaning. They show pattern that
may show order or chaos.

2. They make shape of the image clear. They could

be broken or unbroken and create a reading path for our eyes.

3. The lighter shade used in the image gives a

feeling of calmness and coolness. Darker shades give a stronger feeling
on the viewers such as fear or anger.

B. Directions: Take a look again at the images below. Name each visual
element. I know you can do it.

11
WHAT IS IT

VISUAL ELEMENTS

Do you enjoy looking at the pictures in books? Perhaps you have enjoyed the
murals and big drawings in the walls of your school and laughed at the
animated cartoons shown on television. Each image gives a meaning that you
can interpret based on its colors, lines and shapes.

There are different elements that make an image come alive and contribute
to the viewers or readers understanding. These are colors, lines, shapes,
symbols, gaze, gestures, angle, framing, lighting and distance.

We will focus on the first three visual elements such as colors, lines and
shapes so you will be able to interpret the meaning of visual images easily.

Visual images include pictures, drawings, comics, cartoons and diagrams.

Other examples are paintings, maps, signs, posters and wallpapers. They can
help the readers clarify meaning while reading in many ways. By
understanding the colors, lines and shapes found in the images, a reader or
viewer will be able to interpret their meaning.

Visual elements such as colors, lines and shapes help us interpret the
meaning of the images that we see around us. Lighter colors like yellow,
pink, green, blue and orange give us calmness, abundance, energy and hope.
Darker colors such as violet, red, maroon, brown and gray give us a feeling
of mystery, fear, anger and dullness.

Horizontal lines suggest a feeling of rest while vertical lines give us a sense of
height. Diagonal lines give a feeling of movement while curve lines mean soft
and sensual. Shapes and form define the objects in a space. We can tell the
height, width and depth of object we see in visual images making us understand
what the image is about.

Directions: Identify whether the given image is a picture, drawing, comic, cartoon
diagram, painting, map, sign, poster or wallpaper.

have not identified all of them, it’s fine because there are still a lot of
things to learn in the succeeding pages of this module. As you view
each image, take time to think of the visual clues which you have

looking at, focus on these elements to help you describe, compare and
estimate objects. These are:
