VOCABULAIRE – OÙ HABITES-TU?
1. J’habite en ville / I live in a town

6. J’habite dans un village du sud de la France / I live in a village in the South of France
• The most informal way: « Tu habites où? » is just a statement and you will raise your
voice at the end of the question. Best used orally.
• Common way: « Où est-ce que tu habites? » - est-ce que turns a statement into a
question and is used a lot. Used both orally and in writing. Note there is a hyphen
between est and ce.
• More formal way: « Où habites-tu? », there’s an inversion of the verb and the subject
compared to a normal statement. Used both orally and in writing. Note there is a hyphen
between the verb and the pronoun.

AUX + pays J’habite aux États- « aux » is used because Etats-Unis is a plural
pluriel Unis noun
• Towns, cities and regions: Nouns ending with an –e are usually feminine but not
always! If you look up a word in the dictionary it will tell you if it’s nf (nom féminin)
or nm (nom masculin)

3. Like a subway but faster and it covers longer distances and doesn’t have as many stops. /

If you don't follow the verb with a place, you have to use « Y ». Example: J'y VAIS. (Je vais is
not a sentence in French.)
1. Are you going to the swimming pool today? No, I'm going (there) tomorrow. / tu vas a la
piscine aujourd’hui? Non, j’y vais aller demain
2. We're going to the cinema. Do you want to go (there)? / nous allons au cinema, tu veux y
