GRAMMAR
Masculine/Feminine
Key points
Most nouns referring to men, boys and male animals are masculine;
most nouns referring to women, girls and female animals are feminine.
The ending of a French noun often changes depending on whether it refers to a male or a
female.
Generally, words ending in -e are feminine and words ending in a consonant are masculine,
though there are many exceptions to this rule.
Ex, Maison(house) – feminine- even it ends with a consonant
Indefinite Article
The indefinite articles are un (masculine singular) (a),
1 –un
une (feminine singular) (a),
Number one
and des (both masculine and feminine plural) (some).
Un chien – a dog
Une chienne – a dog – female
Des chiens – dogs – male/plural
Des chiennes – dogs female/plural

In French, when you state your profession, you just say Je suis. . (I am. . .) and then name
the profession.
For example, Je suis professeur - means I am a teacher, professor.
To identify someone else’s profession, use the construction Il/Elle est. . . (He/She is. . .).
Il est ingénieur. He is an engineer.
Notice that in these constructions, you don’t use the article un (a, an), as you do in English
(I am a teacher, for example, or he is an engineer).
