ELICIT Activity 1 (10 mins)

Direction: Determine the roots of each quadratic equation using
any method.

1. x2 + 7x + 12 = 0 x 1= ____ , x 2 = ____

2. 2x2 – 3x – 20 = 0 x 1= ____ , x 2= ____

1. How did you find the roots of each equation?

2. Which method of solving quadratic equations did you us in
finding the roots?

ENGAGE Paper Plane (5 mins)

Let the students fold the paper that they had use in doing
activity 1 into a paper plane. In unison, they will all throw their
planes and pick the nearest plane that landed. For 5 minutes
they will analyze the answers of their classmate.
a. Compare your answers with your classmates. Did you arrive at
the same answer? If NOT, explain why?

EXPLORE Activity 2 (5 mins)

Direction: Solve for the sum and product of the roots. Complete
the following table.

Quadratic Equation Sum of Roots Product of Roots

x2 + 7x + 12 = 0
2x2 – 3x – 20 = 0
EXPLAIN (10 mins)
The product of the roots of the quadratic equation ax 2 + bx + c =
0 can be determined using the coefficients a, b, and c.
Remember that the roots of a quadratic equation can be
determined using the formula

−b ± √ b −4 ac
2
x=
2a

−b+ √ b2 −4 ac
From the quadratic formula, let x 1= and
2a
−b−√ b −4 ac
2
x 2= be the roots. Let us now derive the formula for
2a
the product of the roots.

( −b+ √ b −4 ac
)(
−b− √b −4 ac
)
2 2
x 1 x 2= ×
2a 2a

(−b+ √ b −4 ac )(−b−√ b −4 ac )
2 2
x 1 x 2=
(2 a)(2 a)

x 1 x 2=¿
(−b ) (−b ) + (−b ) ( −√ b2−4 ac ) + (−b ) ( √ b2−4 ac ) +(√ b2−4 ac )(−√ b2−4 ac )
(2 a)(2 a)

b2 +b √ b2 −4 ac−b ( √ b2 −4 ac ) −( √ b2−4 ac )
2

x 1 x 2=
(2 a)(2 a)

b2 +b √ b2 −4 ac−b ( √ b2 −4 ac ) −( √ b2−4 ac )
2

x 1 x 2= 2

2
b2 −( √ b2 −4 ac )
x 1 x 2= 2

b2−( √ b2−4 ac )
2
(b¿ ¿2−4 ac)
x 1 x 2= 2
x1 + x 2=b 2− 2

4a 4a

b2−( b2−4 ac ) b2−b 2+ 4 ac

x 1 x 2= 2
x 1 + x 2 = 2

ELABORATE Solve the Product of Roots (20 mins)

Example 1. Find the sum of the roots of 2 x2 + 8x – 10 = 0

c c −10
Product of the roots = → = =−5
a a 2

The product of the roots of 2 x2 + 8x – 10 = 0 is -5

Example 2. Use the values of a, b and c in finding the roots of

the quadratic equation.

The values of a, b, and c in the equation are 1, 7 and -18,

respectively. Use this value to find the sum and the product of
the roots of the equation.

c c −18
Product of the roots = → = =−18
a a 1

The product of the roots of x 2 + 7x – 18 = 0 is -18

Direction: Find a partner. Determine the product of the roots.

1. x2 −2 x−6=0
2
2. x =10 x −36
2 2
3. x +2 x−5=04. 4 x +8 x +6−0
