Plusieurs philosophes grecs réfléchirent à l'idée de
changements dans les organismes vivants.
Anaximandre (610-546 av. J.-C.) proposa que les
premiers animaux vivaient dans l'eau et que les
animaux terrestres en étaient issus[1]. Empédocle
(490-435 av. J.-C.) écrivit une origine non-
surnaturelle des êtres vivants[2], suggérant que
l'adaptation n'avait pas besoin de guide ou de cause
finale. Aristote résuma cette idée : « Ainsi donc,
toutes les fois que les choses se produisent
accidentellement comme elles se seraient produites
ayant un but, elles subsistent et se conservent, parce
qu'elles ont pris spontanément la condition
convenable ; mais celles où il en est autrement ont
péri ou périssent... » bien qu'Aristote n'approuvât pas
cette idée[3]. Le reste de la théorie de l'évolution
d'Empédocle est rudimentaire : il estimait que les
organes avaient existé de façon indépendante en
multiples combinaisons aléatoires (des jambes sans
corps, des têtes sans yeux, etc) et que seuls les plus
adaptés auraient survécu. Même si cette base est
aujourd'hui peu crédible, le concept fondamental
d'évolutionnisme s'y trouve bel et bien.

15. Selon Réda Benkirane, en islam, l’évolution et la
contingence sont inscrites au cœur même de la
révélation coranique. Ainsi selon la tradition
islamique (Sunna), la raison coranique telle
qu’elle s’est elle-même révélée à l’être adamique
est donc éminemment évolutive et non linéaire.
Par ailleurs, même en partant d’une création
divine du monde, la conception islamique où
Dieu travaille continuellement à sa création,
souligne que l’évolution biologique ne crée pas
d’impasse métaphysique particulière aux
musulmans. Le Créateur y reste
incommensurable, inconnaissable, quand « Il
n’engendre pas et n’est pas engendré » et que
« Nul n’est égal à Lui. » (Coran : 112, 1-4). La
notion théologique de renouvellement de la
création (tajdid al-khalq) est ici spécifique de la
tradition islamique. C’est parce que « tout ce qui
est sur terre est périssable » que le processus de
création est en fait une re-création permanente
(« Chaque jour, Il est à la tâche », (Cor. LV : 29).
Création divine et évolution biologique ne
s’excluent donc pas l’une l’autre.
