FRENCH GRAMMAR

PARTICIPE PRE̒SENT(PRESENT PARTICIPLE)

It is formed by dropping the –ons ending from the present tense nous form and adding -ant.
PAR EXEMPLE:
ER GROUPE:

❖ Chanter (To sing)

nous chantons (we sing) -- Chantant ( singing)

❖ Bavarder (To gossip)

nous bavardons ( we gossip ) – bavardant ( gossiping)

IR GROUPE:

❖ Choisir (To choose)

nous choisissons (we choose ) --- choisissant (choosing)

❖ Réussir ( To win/ successed)

nous réussissons (we win) --- réusssissant ( winning)

RE GROUPE:

❖ Répondre(To answer)

nous répondons ( we answer) – re̒pondant (answering)

❖ Apprendre ( To learn)

nous apprenons ( we learn) – apprenant( learning)

Some spelling changes with –cer and –ger verbs:
➢ Annoncer( To announce)

➢ Nous annonçons – (we announce) --- annonçant( announcing)

➢ Déplacer ( To move )

➢ Nous déplaçons ( we move) – déplaçant ( moving)

➢ Protéger ( To protect /safeguard )

➢ Nous protégeons ( we protect ) --- protégeant (protecting)

➢ Rédiger (To write / draft )

➢ Nous rédigeons (we write) – rédigeant (writing)

Three verbes have irregular participle present:

❖ Être – étant

❖ Avoir – ayant

❖ Savoir- sachant

PRONOMINAL VERBS :
⮚ Se promener ( To take a walk)

me promenant nous promenant

te promenant vous promenant walking
se promenant se promenant
GERONDIF ( THE GERUND)
When the participle présent is introduced by en ,it is referred as gérondif(gerund).

⮚ La régle: Gérondif =en + participe présent

When talking about two actions that happen simultaneously , you can use gérondif.
We use gerund in everyday language to express simultaneous action, condition,
contradiction and manner.

PAR EXEMPLE:

1. Changer – nous changeons – changeant - en changeant

2. Attendre – nous attendons – attendant – en attendant

3. Finir – nous finissons- finissant – en finissant

4. Être – nous sommes – étant – en étant (exemption )

Quelques exemples:
1)Elle a perdue son sac à main en voyageant dans le bus.
2)Il mange en regardeant la television.
3)Elle a fait son devoir en parlant avec ses amis.
