Lesson Writing a reaction about a character
2 in a story read.

It is very important for us to know all about the characters as

an element in a story. It will help us react and find evidence that
will justify their role.
A character is any animate figure within a story. So, things
like plants and non-living objects would not normally be
considered characters, unless of course these things have been
personified and brought to life.
A character’s development speaks of the depth and
complexity of a character. It’s possible that a character starts out
thoroughly developed, or it may be that the author chooses to
slowly develop that character as the plot unfolds. It can also be the
case that a character starts out highly developed, but the reader is
not made aware of certain aspects of their development until later.

5 DO_Q4_ENGLISH4_LESSON2
Main characters are essential to every story. Main characters
are the characters with the most amount of influence on the plot
or the characters that the plot has the most influence on.

There are a few different ways in which you can classify main
characters in a story: flat or round characters, protagonist, or
antagonist, and dynamic or static characters.

● Flat characters are often described as characters that are

two-dimensional. Meaning that they lack real depth or are not
super complex, nor do they show much development throughout
the story.

●Round characters can be thought of as three dimensional.

These are the characters that are realistically complex and have
depth that is identifiable and distinctly humanlike.

●A protagonist is always a main character in the story. The

protagonist prompts a story’s action and captivates the reader’s
attention.

●The antagonist is directly opposite to the protagonist. The

antagonist works against the protagonist. They are usually the bad
guy or girl in the story.

●Dynamic characters are directly connected to character

development and refer to a character who undergoes change within
a story. They are characters that the reader watches develop. Most
often a protagonist is a dynamic character. For example, a
character may start out closed off, and throughout the course of
the story they begin to let some of those walls down.

Characters are essential part of any literary work. They make the
story possible based on how the character is built can help to bring
the story to life.

His parents were worried as to how to teach him about kindness
and sharing.
Then, one day Leo was returning from school on his new
bicycle. As Leo was watching, a boy fell into a ditch and hurt
himself. The boy cried, “Ah! I can’t move my arm.”
Leo would never help anyone but that day, he felt sad for
the boy. So, he rushed to him and helped him stand. He said to
the boy “Looks like you have a fractured hand. Sit behind me and
I’ll carry you to the hospital.”
Later that evening, the boy’s parents visited Leo and

as fact or opinion. Write on your paper F if the
sentence is a fact, write O if it is an opinion.

This coming vacation, my family decided to start raising

chickens. Chickens make great pets because they are adorable.
This will also give us food and meat. They are very sociable
animals, so they like to live in groups. A group of hens is called a
breed. When hens are healthy, they will lay a lot of eggs during
spring summertime and fall. But when there is less sunlight, like
in the wintertime, they stop laying eggs. Freshly laid eggs are the
most healthy and delicious that you will ever try.
Even though they are fun pets, chickens are sometimes
gross. For example, chicken manure is very stinky. A lot of people
use chicken manure as a fertilizer in their garden because it has a
lot of nitrogen in it, which is healthy for plants. Our chickens eat
disgusting things, like bugs. But they also eat grains, seeds, fruits,
and vegetables. We buy chicken feed for only 45 pesos per kilo at
the pet store near our house. If you have no pets at home, you
must try to raise chickens too.

Why is PH lagging behind in Covid-19 vaccination?

Senators ask
by: Christia Marie Ramos

MANILA, Philippines — Some senators on Thursday have

questioned why the Philippines seems to be lagging behind its
vaccination program, saying that the delivery date of vaccines to
the country remains unclear amid the absence of any signed
supply agreement.

“We’ve already had days of practice but until now we don’t have
the vaccines yet and they can’t give us a definite date when it is
coming” Senator Nancy Binay said in an interview with ABS-CBN
News Channel.

19 DO_Q4_ENGLISH4_LESSON5
The mere fact that we only have term sheets at the moment and
we have yet to sign any supply agreement, the delivery of the
vaccines will always be a question. At this point the only thing that
is sure is that it is still unsure when the vaccines will arrive.
Senator Nancy Binay said in an interview with ABS-CBN News
Channel.

The government targets to roll out its Covid-19 mass immunization

program within the first quarter of the year, eyeing to vaccinate at
least 70 million Filipinos to achieve herd immunity and
significantly arrest the transmission of SARS-CoV-2, which causes
the potentially fatal respiratory illness.

“I think from day one when we had this problem, we have always
been reactionary. That’s why at this point, we can’t keep up in
solving our problem with Covid-19”. Binay also said.

Senate Minority Leader Franklin Drilon also lamented that “It is

very disappointing. I am worried for the future of our country,” he
said in a statement. “Each day we fail to start the vaccination

EDITORIAL - Resuming education

Classes were among the first to be disrupted by the coronavirus

disease 2019 pandemic. As in the difficult balancing act between
public health and economic health, stakeholders are struggling to
balance the need between protecting people from a contagion and
resuming formal education.

21 DO_Q4_ENGLISH4_LESSON7
The COVID-19 pandemic struck as public schools were entering
the final weeks of the schoolyear. Graduation proceedings remain
in limbo; authorities have yet to decide whether there will be a
universal promotion of all students to the next level, or whether a
remedial period for the missed lessons will be required before
students can move up to the next grade.

At this point, a regular school opening in June appears to be out

of the question. With the country increasing capabilities in COVID
testing, contact tracing, isolation and quarantine, however,
stakeholders are tossing around the possibility of starting the next
schoolyear in August.
Health experts are likely to caution against any haste in reopening
schools. While children are not considered at high risk for COVID
infection, they are not immune to the disease: children as young
as a few weeks old, toddlers and teenagers have succumbed to the
coronavirus.

As education stakeholders weigh their options, authorities can

boost efforts to promote online learning. Amid the enhanced
community quarantine, the Department of Education has
launched on online platform called DepEd Commons, which allows
distance learning through digital technology.

DepEd Commons offers online review materials and open

educational resources prepared by teachers who are experts in
particular subjects. DepEd officials say most public school
teachers and students have computers or cell phones that can
facilitate online learning. The problem is that internet access in the
country is only at about 48 percent.

While acknowledging the limitations of the program, DepEd says:

“In this extraordinary situation we find ourselves in, we must walk
before we run.” Those who cannot avail themselves of the program
can opt for paper-based homework to complete the requirements
of the schoolyear.

With scientists still trying to develop a COVID-19 vaccine and any

possible cure still several months away from mass production, the
consequences of reopening classes in the country’s crowded
schools need careful consideration. Technology allows remote

accessible. With the public health threat expected to persist for
months, alternative learning modes must be promoted.

by or on behalf of an editor that gives an opinion on an issue.
A. It has an introduction, body, and conclusion.

1) Introduction: states the problem

2) Body: expresses an opinion
3) Conclusion: summarizes the main issue and suggest a solution

Let us study this.

23 DO_Q4_ENGLISH4_LESSON7
a. What was the paragraph all about?
b. Was there a PROBLEM or an ISSUE that was raised with
Christian Bautista’s public performance?
c. What is your reaction about this issue?
d. What type of editorial do you think is this kind of issue?
e. What is your reaction, opinion, and comments about the
issue?
f. How many paragraphs does it have?

B. Here are several kinds of editorials.

1. Editorial of Information- gives information on facts unknown to

the reader
2. Editorial of Criticism- it states the good and bad features of a
problem and may suggest a solution.
3. Editorial of Commendation- it praises, commends, or tributes to
a person, and organization
4. Editorial of Special Occasion- it gives information and meaning
to special events such as holidays and other significant events.

C. Tips in writing an editorial:

1. Before writing, be sure to understand thoroughly the situation

or problem which you are going to write about. Research your
topic if needed.
2. Plan a catchy and interesting introduction. This is the news
peg, the situation, the problem about which the editorial is
centered.
3. Build up your arguments in a logical sequence. Explain your
reactions to the problem. Give examples to support your
arguments. This is an effective way to drive home your point.
4. The last part of the editorial should tie up with your
introduction. Suggest either a solution or present a challenge.

D. In writing you should follow correct mechanics such as:

1. indention 4. capitalization
2. neatness and orderliness 5. margin
3. punctuation marks

24 DO_Q4_ENGLISH4_LESSON7
The editorial is a conversation, representing the viewpoints
of the topic. It should be like the author is talking to the reader.
Unlike opinion writing where we use opinion such as “I think and,
in my opinion,” we avoid these in an editorial and we don’t use a
pronoun in the first-person point of view. We use pronouns in the
third person point of view.

Notes to the Teacher: Aid the pupils in understanding what an

editorial is. Explain its difference from writing an opinion. Review
also rules on pronouns and first- and third-person point of view.
