THE NECKLACE
by Henri Rene Albert Guy de Maupassant

INTRODUCTION

Henri René Albert Guy de Maupassant's 'the Necklace' is a short

story that describes the tale of Mathilde Loisel and the
experience she had with a diamond necklace. Mathilde's
character was introduced as one who is not happy about her
social standing. The author managed to highlight the travails of
life one entertains as a result of being class-conscious. This story
mirrors the author's understanding of the French society of his
time.
SUMMARY
"The Necklace" is a short story written by Guy de Maupassant. The plot
revolves around a middle-class woman named Mathilde Loisel, who dreams
of a luxurious life but is discontent with her modest circumstances. When
she receives an invitation to a high-society event, she borrows an exquisite
necklace from a friend to enhance her appearance. After the event, Mathilde
realizes she has lost the necklace. In a desperate attempt to replace it
without revealing the loss, she and her husband go into debt to buy a new
one. Years later, they manage to repay the debt, but only then does Mathilde
confess that the original necklace was a fake, revealing the irony of her
pursuit of social status and the tragic consequences of her actions.
ANALYSIS
The short story's use of symbolism is evident through the

necklace that Mathilde borrowed from Madame Forestier. It

symbolizes man's continued reliance and hold to material things.

Rather than focusing on the intangible things, it becomes a

motivation that people seek to pursue. This remains to be the case

for Mathilde that eventually led to further problems

ANALYSIS
However, Mathilde should not be blamed for dreaming a luxury of life. She

is just a victim of the materialistic values of the French society. In a culture

affected by materialism and even existentialism, the Loisels have many

unethical options in the face of this misery. But they accept the consequence

of their carelessness and act stoically to clear their conscience as well as to

preserve their dignity. They do not blame each other for what happened.

They do not try to interpret the agony as the folly or mistake of anybody, but

face life as it is.

ANALYSIS

Mathilde even deserves sympathy because when she loses

the borrowed necklace, she never thinks of denying that.

Instead, she has the strong sense of responsibility to repay

the necklace to her friend, even it takes her rest life for

the repayment
CONCLUSION
Though "The Necklace" is a very short piece, it is a rich example of a morality tale
that encourages readers to appreciate what's truly valuable in their lives and to
approach mistakes with honesty and humility. The story ends in a very ironical tone.
The falsehood of the necklace lays bares the truth about the whole system of social
hierarchy. Just like the false diamonds, anything that looks precious is valued in that
society. The universality in this literary piece lies in the fact that it applies to any
society where people have to hide behind clothes and commodities in order to assert
respect. In this story, Guy de Maupassant establishes his genius not only as a
storyteller but also as a social critic.
THE LAST LEAF
BY O. HENRY
All in all, The Last Leaf is such a well written story that can
touch different emotions. The title suggests that the leaf is the
most significant aspect of the story. On one side, the leaves
lead Johnsy to believe she will die, and it is also the last leaf
that allows her to survive, so it makes sense. This story is full
of values and a very inspiring one. This short story gives a
huge message and moral lesson to never lose hope, and there
will always be someone in our life who are willing to sacrifice
and ready to do anything for you. The Last Leaf leaves an
impact particularly on readers because of the twist ending, for
which O Henry is famous
O. Henry, a.k.a. Willian Sydney Porter, is a well-known
American short story author. "The Gift of the Magi," "The
Duplicity of Hargraves, " and "The Ransom of Red Chief"
are among Porter's works. His stories are noted for their
unexpected endings and witty storytelling. O. Henry's short
story "The Last Leaf" was first published in 1907 in his
collection The Trimmed Lamp and Other Stories. The plot
takes place in Greenwich Village and at the height of a
pneumonia outbreak. The Last Leaf demonstrates the
strength of faith and to get people to believe in human life,
it's a story that has a lot of values and can touch your
emotions and feelings.
“The Last Leaf” is a story of Johnsy, a poor young
woman who is critically ill due to pneumonia. She
believes that when the ivy vine on the wall outside
her window would lose all its leaves, she would die
too. However, her neighbor, Behrman, an artist, tricks
her by painting a leaf on the wall. Johnsy recovers.
Despite the fact that the story had a sad ending, I like the way
how it ends and I found it to be very inspiring and a very well
written story. I like Behrman's character as he is very inspiring.
He did what he needed to do to save Johnsy, he risked his life
and wouldn't care what would happen to him. This story shows
how a single good deed can have a significant impact. I was
astounded by how the story ends, the plot twists and turns, and
the conclusion is unexpected. The conclusion is tragic; what is
predicted does not occur.
