Saints and Beloved of God

Edition #30139854

Composer Notes
The Church is a community, a company of pilgrim companions on our way to God’s eternity. Our
companionship doesn’t end with our lifetime, but reaches back through time and includes not only
those men and women recognized by the Church for their exemplary holiness, but also those among
our friends and family who have inspired us to walk closely with God.
To that end, the final verse (6a–6c) is designed to allow a community to honor a particular saint,
patron, or family member, and to allow for the inclusion of names having a different number
of syllables.
(a) This note structure is designed primarily for names with two syllables, the most common
among names, e.g., Mary, Joseph, Agnes, Andrew, etc. With a small adjustment this form can
also be used for three-syllable names accented on the first syllable, e.g., Anthony, Benedict,

w
Angela, Monica, etc.
(b) This note structure is for saint names having only one syllable, e.g., Luke, John, Joan, Clare, etc.
(c) This final note structure is primarily for names of three syllables accented on the second
syllable, e.g., Ignatius, Augustine, Theresa, etc. This can also be used for four-syllable names,
e.g., Veronica, Bartholomew, Elizabeth, etc.

ie
Even though Verse 6 is listed as the final verse, it should be sung at whatever is judged to be the
most appropriate place in the sequence of verses. Likewise, although six verses are provided, it
would be rare that all these verses would be needed at a particular liturgy. It would be completely
reasonable to select which verses are most appropriate for the celebration of the feast, holy day,
funeral, or memorial.
