note explicitement qu'il omet des textes.

The importance of the « Vulgate » commentary for our understanding of the transmission and
study of Ovid during the Middle Ages was signalled as early as 1920 by L. Castiglioni in a brief
study which he published on manuscripts housed in the Biblioteca Riccardiana (1). Despite
this commendation, little or no scholarly research has been conducted to date into either the
textual tradition of this work or its approaches to the explication of Ovid's text. F. Ghisalberti,
in his two studies of Arnulf of Orléans and John of Garland, did briefly allude to this commentary
(as the « commentario Vulgato », whence my title) and identified the six copies of the work then
known: Paris, B.N. lat. 8004, 8011, 8012, Milano, Ambros. P 43 sup., Vat. lat. 1598, and
Firenze, Riccard. 624 (2) ; further, F. Munari has published useful summary descriptions of
the manuscripts of the Metamorphoses including those mentioned by Ghisalberti (3). While a
* I would like to express my gratitude to various organizations which provided generous financial help in the
writing of this article. The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (formerly the Canada
Council) awarded me a travel grant to examine Metamorphoses manuscripts in European libraries during 1981.
The Hill Monastic Manuscript Library, Collegeville, Minnesota, also provided a fellowship to examine their
microfilmed holdings from Austrian libraries. I would like to thank Professor Richard Tarrant of Harvard
University for valuable criticisms of an earlier draft of this paper, and Professor Richard Rouse for his opinion
on the dates of the Berlin and Wolfenbuttel manuscripts. Finally, Mme J. Fohlen and the staff of the IRHT in
Paris were unfailingly generous in providing access to their invaluable collection of microfilms and notes.
