The Story behind Malgré Tout

1. What does it make you feel or think by listening to it?

This song makes me feel sad but with a feeling of betrayal or something
similar, as it is a thought-provoking rhythm, like for a research situation. It is
a feeling of loneliness mixed with guilt, it is difficult to interpret but negative
emotions and somewhat mysterious.

2. What does the title "Malgré Tout" mean?

In Spanish the title means “A pesar de todo”, named after a famous piece by
the author's friend made in 1898.

3. Who composed Malgré Tout?

Manuel M. Ponce in homage to his friend.

4. Who sculptured "Malgré Tout"?

Sculptor Jesús F. Contreras

5. What is the relationship between the sculpture "Malgré Tout" and the song?

The musical work was composed to be played on the piano with only the left
hand and bears the name of a famous piece by Contreras made in 1898,
due to the fact that the sculptor lost his right arm due to an illness.

6. In which museum can you see this sculpture?

Today it is part of the collection of the National Museum of Art, Mexico.

7. Describe the sculpture and include what does it tell you?

I see a woman on the floor representing slavery, tied up and quite
devastated, being completely deprived of her freedom, and with no
opportunity to do anything.
