Bonjour à tous et bienvenue au NMPSP et plus précisément dans

notre exposition temporaire exceptionnelle : « MMI ».
Je m’appelle donc Louis et je serai votre guide pour cette courte
visite...
Voici donc les deux tableau que je vais vous présenter aujourd’hui :
donc 1èrement, un autoportrait sans titre de Van Gogh qui est
vraiment rare mais ça, je vous le dirai tout à l’heure ainsi qu’un
autoportrait de l’artiste « not well know » Jasper Johns.

Hello everyone and welcome to the NMPSP! More precisely to our

outstanding temporary exhibit: “MMI”.
My name is Louis, I will be your guide for this short visit…
Thus, these are the two paintings of which I’m going to dwell on
today: to begin with, we are confronted to an untitled self-portrait
from VG which is undeniably out of the ordinary. As well as a second
self-portrait of the not well-known Jasper Johns.

- Alors, le tableau de VG est très très très particulier et
extrêmement rare donc c’est immense chance que vous avez de
le découvrir aujourd’hui.

- Il a été découvert cette année dans le musée de « National

Galleries of Scotland » par une étude au rayons X. au dos d’un
tableau très connu : celui-ci : Portrait d’une Paysanne. Cet
œuvre jusqu’alors inconnue était recouverte par des couches
de colles et de carton. « We can state that » VG était connu
pour avoir réutilisé des toiles afin d’économiser de l’argent.

- L’autoportrait montre un homme barbu, assis avec un chapeau

sur la tête et un foulard autour du cou. « On top of that », on
peut clairement voir son oreille gauche que le peintre s’est
coupée en 1888. Cela signifie donc qu’il l’a peint avant :
probablement pendant qu’il vivait à Paris : entre 1886 et 1888.

- Le musée est désormais en train de réfléchir à comment

séparer des deux œuvres sans les abîmer.
 - Then, VG’s painting is tremendously distinct as well as ever so
rare, Hence, you are hugely lucky to have discovered it right
now!

- It has been detected in the museum of “NGS” by an X-ray study

on the back of a world-famous art piece: Portrait of a Peasant
Woman. This hitherto unknown work was covered with layers
of glue together with carboard. We are cognizant of VG was
known for reusing canvas to save money.

- Let us return to the matter at hand. The self-portrait shows off a

bearded man, seated with a hat on the head / in addition to a
scarf around his neck. On top of that, we are unquestionably
able to see his left ear which the painter cut off in 1888. This
therefore means that he painted it before. Probably when he
was living in Paris; from 1886 to 1888.

- Lastly, we can gather that the museum is now considering how

to separate the two visionary works without damaging them.

- L’autre tableau est aussi très spécial et bien plus qu’étrange.

- Pour faire son tableau, Jasper Johns s’est enduit le visage et les
mains d’huile et s’est appuyé sur une feuille en papier comme
s’il était derrière une vitre.

- Avec cela en tête, on peut tout à fait distinguer les mains ici, ses
oreilles et son visage.

- C’est donc une œuvre qui sort vraiment du lot et qui est très
particulière mais très intéressante en effet, il a possiblement
voulu se représenter simplement sans que l’on puisse le
reconnaître

- Il a sans aucun doute eu l’intention de fait penser au linceul de

Jésus, vous savez, le linge que l’on a mis sur Jésus dans son
tombeau.
 - The other canvas is without the shadow of a doubt exceedingly
special and much more than peculiar…

- To create his painting, Jasper Johns coated his face and hands
with oil and leaned on a sheet of paper as if he were behind
glass.

- With this in mind, we can wholly make out the hands here, his
ears likewise his face.

- It’s therefore a masterpiece that really stands out as well as is

truly peticular even so it’s rather gripping. Indeed, I seems to
me that he aimed at epitomizing himself merely without being
able to recognize him.

- It is obvious that he intended on to make think about the

shroud of Jesus. You know! The linen that was put on Jesus in
his grave.

En tout cas, je suis fermement convaincu que ce sont vraiment deux

œuvres unique et « awe-inspiring ».
Anyway, I’m utterly convinced that / these are really two unique and
"awe-inspiring" works.

- Pour les comparer, ils n’ont pas du tout été peints à la même
époque : VG entre 1886 et 1888 / JJ en 1962. Soit près d’un
siècle d’écart !!!

- Profils de peintres totalement différents : VG : peintre

Néerlandais plus impressionniste avec bcp de travail dans ses
œuvres / JJ : Américain inspiré par le pop art : il prend pour
sujet des objets de la vie quotidienne

- En ce qui concerne les couleurs on ne peut pas les voir sur le

tableau de VG car c’est une vue en rayon X / dans celui de Johns
sobriété et simplicité : noir et blanc

- L’autoportrait de JJ est bcp moins travaillé que celui de VG, en

effet, il s’est seulement appuyé contre une feuille alors que VG
a sans aucun doute dû peindre pendant des heures et y a mis
énormément de détails.
 - To compare and contrast them, they were not at all painted at
the same time: on the one hand, the VGs one has been drawn
between 1886 and 1888. (And) on the other hand, the JJs one in
1962. This is almost one century apart!

- Similarly, we are presented with profiles of through and

through different painters: Vg Is a more impressionistic Dutch
painter who puts a lot of work in his pieces. However, JJ is an
American Pop-art artist: he takes everyday objects as his
subject.

- As far as the colors are concerned, they cannot be seen on VG’s

portrait owing to it’s an X-ray view. Contrariwise, in John’s one,
sobriety in addition to simplicity are favored. That is why his
work is in black and white.

- And to close out this visit, I would tend to believe JJ’s self-
portrait is much less elaborate than VG’s one: he only leaned
against a paper sheet while VG undoubtedly had to paint for
hours and put a lot of detail into it.

QUESTIONS :

Pour répondre à la question de l'oreille, il se l'est coupée en 1888

après une violente dispute avec Paul Gauguin à Arles, en France.
Et pourquoi ils ont fait une étude sur ce tableau ??? Et bien avant de
l’amener à Édimbourg pour une exposition. Ils ont eu l’occasion de
réaliser ce contrôle et c’est à ce moment-là qu’ils ont pu découvrir
cette merveille.

VVG était malade mentalement et peu reconnu de son vivant.

Il est décédé en France à l’âge de 37 ans après s’être, on en n’est pas certain,
pris une balle perdue de deux ados jouant aux cowboys. Il aurait dit qu’il
avait voulu se suicider pour protéger les garçons.
Il a réalisé plus de 2000 peintures, dessins et croquis au total.
Il a régulièrement peint des autoportraits, dont 37 étaient connus jusqu’à
présent. Ils sont le reflet de l’évolution de son art.
To answer the ear question, he cut it off in 1888 after a violent
argument with Paul Gauguin in Arles, in France.
And why did they do a study on this painting? Well, before bringing it
to Edinburgh for an exhibition. They had the opportunity to achieve

wonder.

VVG was mentally ill and little recognized during his lifetime.

bullet from two teenagers playing cowboys. He reportedly said he wanted to
kill himself to protect the boys.
He made more than 2000 paintings, drawings, and sketches in total.
He regularly painted self-portraits, of which 37 were known so far. They reflect
the evolution of his art.
