How to express feelings.

◦ ça va ? - are you ok?

◦ je suis content(e)* - I am happy
◦ je suis triste - I am sad
◦ je suis fâché(e)* - I am cross/angry
◦ je suis fatigué(e)* - I am tired
◦ je suis malade - I am sick

* In French, adjectives agree in gender and number with the noun they describe.
The agreement of adjectives will be covered later on in this course.

Please note that when writing cent in letters, cent takes an -s when it is
multiplied, but not followed by another number. However, when it is followed by
another number, it does not take an -s.

EXPRESSION D'UNE DÉCENNIE

◦ les années soixante - the sixties
◦ les années soixante-dix - the seventies
◦ les années quatre-vingts - the eighties
◦ les années quatre-vingt-dix - the nineties

LES NOMBRES EN -AINE

Certain numbers which include the suffix -aine are used to express an
approximate quantity.

◦ dix (ten) → une diz aine (around ten)

◦ douze (twelve) → une douzaine (a dozen)
◦ quinze (fifteen) → une quinz aine (around fifteen)
◦ vingt (twenty) → une vingt aine (around twenty)
◦ trente (thirty) → une trentaine (around thirty)
◦ quarante (forty) → une quarantaine (around forty)
◦ cinquante (fifty) → une cinquant aine (around fifty)
◦ soixante (sixty) → une soixantaine (around sixty)
◦ cent (one hundred) → une cent aine (around one hundred)

▸ une centaine de personnes

▹ around a hundred people

▸ une douzaine d’œufs

▹ a dozen eggs

Please note that de becomes d’ in front of an h or a vowel.

You could also express an approximate quantity by using environ (roughly).

▸ cent personnes environ

▹ around a hundred people

▸ quarante pommes environ

▹ around 40 apples
