Lalique et l’Alsace
En 1920, René Lalique s’installa
avec sa famille dans un petit village
alsacien, Wingen-sur-Moder. Un an
plus tard, non loin de la villa qu’il
venait de faire construire, René
Lalique ouvrit sa manufacture de
verre qu’il nomma La Verrerie
d’Alsace, laquelle allait acquérir une
renommée mondiale.
Dès le premier jour, René Lalique
se sentit proche de l’Alsace et de
ses vins. Ainsi, dès 1922, il créa
pour le viticulteur alsacien Pierre
Weissenburger, toute une collection
en verre – bouteilles, carafes et verres
à vin – sous le nom du domaine Clos
Sainte-Odile.
Preuve du lien fort qui unit René
Lalique à l’Alsace et ses vins, la
plupart des services de verres
portent des noms de villes et villages
alsaciens : Strasbourg, Colmar,
Riquewihr, Mulhouse et bien d’autres.
A l’instar de René Lalique il y a
presque cent ans, il nous tenait à cœur

de témoigner notre respect à l’Alsace,
à l’héritage viticole de la région, aux
viticulteurs alsaciens et à leur travail.
Après deux ans de vastes travaux de
rénovation, l’ancienne résidence de
René Lalique a rouvert ses portes en
septembre 2015, fidèle à la bâtisse
d’origine. Elle s’est transformée en
hôtel de luxe doté d’un restaurant
gastronomique et d’une superbe
carte des vins.
La cave de la Villa René Lalique
recèle, outre les nombreux
crus d’autres régions de France
et du monde entier, un choix
incomparable de vins d’Alsace,
dont des bouteilles rares et des
trouvailles insolites. Ces vins ont été
soigneusement sélectionnés par
Romain Iltis, sommelier alsacien de
la Villa René Lalique, qui a été élu «
Meilleur Sommelier de France 2012
» et « Meilleur Ouvrier de France
2015 ».
Les vins de la région, trop souvent
méconnus, méritent d’être
découverts et dégustés. J’ai donc
souhaité, avec le concours de
James Suckling, célèbre critique de
vins, éditer un guide complet des
meilleurs vins d’Alsace.

Lalique and Alsace
In 1920, René Lalique settled with
his family in the little village of
Wingen-sur-Moder in Alsace. Not far
from his newly built villa he opened
his glass factory, which he named La
Verrerie d’Alsace. It was to become
famous throughout the world.
From the very first day, René Lalique
felt a close affinity with Alsace
and its wines. As early as 1922, he
created an entire glass collection
for the Alsatian winemaker Pierre
Weissenburger. This collection,
comprising wine bottles, carafes
and glasses, was named after the
producer’s estate, Clos Sainte-Odile.
As evidence of the strong bond
linking René Lalique with Alsace
and its wine, most of the services he
created in glass bear the names of
cities, towns and villages in Alsace:
Strasbourg, Colmar, Riquewihr and
Mulhouse, to name but a few.
Just like René Lalique almost
100 years ago, we wanted to
pay due respect to Alsace, to the
winegrowing traditions of the region,
to the winegrowers and to their work.
René Lalique’s former residence was
opened to the public in September
2015, after two years of intensive
renovation work, true to the original.
The villa was given a new purpose
and transformed into a hotel and
restaurant, offering the highest
standards of gastronomy and one of
Europe’s finest wine lists.

sommelier de France 2012” and
“Meilleur ouvrier de France 2015”.
The wines of Alsace, often insufficiently
recognized, deserve to be more
widely known and appreciated. That
prompted me to join forces with the
celebrated wine critic James Suckling
to publish a comprehensive guide to
the best wines of Alsace.
I would like to thank James Suckling for
selecting and rating the 650 excellent
wines of Alsace which are classified
in the guide. Alsace has terroirs of
great quality and the region abounds
with excellent wines and magnificent
domains which I hope this guide will
help to promote – for the pleasure of
wine connoisseurs everywhere.

 Grands vins d’Alsace
Ce guide est le premier d’une
longue série je l’espère mettant
en avant les meilleurs vins que
l’Alsace peut offrir aujourd’hui.
Non seulement ces vins sont
extraordinaires en tout point mais je
ressens aussi un lien émotionnel fort
pour la région du fait de ma relation
avec la Maison Lalique, un des
fleurons de la cristallerie française
qui, depuis près d’un siècle, fabrique
toutes les pièces en cristal dans sa
manufacture à Wingen-sur-Moder.
Ensemble, nous avons conçu la ligne
de verres Lalique 100 Points par
James Suckling et aujourd’hui, la
ligne NEO par James Suckling.
Bien sûr, je n’en suis pas à mon coup
d’essai avec les vins d’Alsace, étant un
critique professionnel de vins depuis
près de 34 ans et un amoureux des
vins depuis presque toujours. Dans
mes jeunes années en Californie du
Sud, mon père avait toujours des
vins d ‘Alsace dans sa cave qu’il avait
la gentillesse de partager avec moi,
les mettant en compétition avec les
meilleurs vins de Bordeaux et de
Napa Valley. De plus, j’ai couvert
les vins d’Alsace pour le magazine
américain « The Wine Spectator » de
la fin des années 1980 aux années
1990 et ai dégusté des centaines de
vins d’Alsace chaque année en plus
de visiter la région. J’ai d’ailleurs
toujours dans ma cave des douzaines
de vins blancs d’Alsace pour ma
consommation personnelle!
Lorsque j’ai quitté mes fonctions
de Chef du bureau européen de
« The Wine Spectator » en 2010,
j’ai décidé de fonder ma propre
entreprise de media du vin –
www.jamessuckling.com. Cinq ans
après, nous enregistrons près de
3 millions de lecteurs avec un haut
pourcentage d’entre eux provenant
de pays asiatiques comme la Chine
et la Thaïlande. Bien que je voyage
toujours en Europe régulièrement, je
suis résident de Hong Kong depuis
déjà quelques temps. C’est d’ailleurs

là-bas que j’ai commencé ma
collaboration avec la Maison Lalique.
Ce n’est cependant que depuis
cette année que je suis revenu en
Alsace pour étudier la région en tant
que critique de vins et journaliste
et je suis très heureux de l’avoir fait.
L’évolution de la production de vins
haut-de-gamme a été monumentale
lors de ces 10 à 15 dernières années.
Bien sûr, beaucoup de domaines
produisent toujours des vins simples
et commerciaux mais l’augmentation
du nombre de vins fins représentant
des terroirs uniques d’Alsace est
pour le moins impressionnante. Et
cela se constate autant avec les vins
blancs que les vins rouges dont un
grand nombre bénéficie de la culture
organique ou biodynamique de leurs
raisins. En effet, le travail de précision
exercé par les meilleurs producteurs
d’Alsace équivaut ou dépasse parfois
même les autres grands terroirs
établis de France et du Monde.
Ce guide présente un certain nombre
d’articles portant sur le paysage actuel
de la viticulture et de la vinification en
Alsace et également ma liste des 100
meilleurs vins d’Alsace parmi les 650
vins dégustés dans la région en 2015.
Cette dernière met essentiellement
en avant ma sélection personnelle des
meilleurs vins d’Alsace avec l’aide de
mon équipe de JamesSuckling.com et
également l’aide du très professionnel
Romain Iltis, Chef Sommelier de la
Villa René Lalique.

Great Wines of Alsace
This guide is the first of what I hope
will be many on the best wines
Alsace has to offer. Not only are
these wines extraordinary in every
sense of the word, but I feel an
emotional connection to the area
because of my relationship with
Lalique, one of the crown jewels
of France’s crystal industry, which
produces all crystal pieces at the
unique manufactory in Wingen-sur-
Moder. Together, we conceived
the original Lalique 100 Points by
James Suckling stemware collection
and now the NEO Lalique by James
Suckling range.
Of course, I am not new to the wines
of Alsace, having been a professional
wine critic for almost 34 years as well
as a wine lover for most of my life.
When I was growing up in Southern
California, my father always had
wines from Alsace in his cellar he was
kind enough to share with me, pitting
them against the best of Bordeaux
and Napa Valley. In addition, I actually
covered Alsace for the American
wine magazine the Wine Spectator in
the late 1980s and 1990s and tasted
hundreds of wines from Alsace each
year as well as visited the region. I
have dozens of Alsace whites still in
my cellar for drinking!
When I left my position as European
Bureau Chief of the Wine Spectator in
2010, I decided to found my own wine
media – www.JamesSuckling.com. Five
years later, and we now count almost
three million readers with a high
percentage of readers in such Asian
countries as China and Thailand. In
fact, though I continue to visit Europe
regularly, I have been a resident of
Hong Kong for quite some time now,
during which I began collaborating
with Lalique.
However, it wasn’t until this year that
I came back to Alsace to study the
area as a wine critic and journalist,
and I am certainly happy I did. The
evolution in premium winemaking has
been monumental in the last 10 to
10
15 years. To be sure, many wineries
still make simple, commercially made
wines but the increase in uber-fine
wines that represent their unique
terriors in Alsace is impressive to say
the least. And this pertains to both
white and red wines, many of which
are produced from organically or
biodynamically grown grapes that
often contribute to their greatness.
Indeed, the sheer precision in
winemaking from the best domaines
in Alsace equals or betters what is
already well noted within France’s
– and thus the world’s – other great
terroirs.
As well as featuring a number of
articles framing the current viticultural
and winemaking landscape in Alsace
today, this guide also includes a list of
my top 100 wines of Alsace in 2015
following various tastings on-site of
more than 650 wines. In essence,
this is my personal selection of the
best wines of Alsace with the help of
my team at JamesSuckling.com as
well as the sommelier of Villa Rene
Lalique, the very professional, Romain
Iltis. Thanks to them as well as my
colleagues at Lalique for making this
guide possible.

L’Alsace est en ce moment-même
la région viticole la plus excitante
de France. Aucun autre endroit
n’offre une telle diversité de vins
provenant d’une large gamme de
cépages, de sols, de microclimats
et de producteurs qui proposent
en retour au consommateur des
vins uniques qui sont parmi les
plus complexes de la planète. Voilà
pourquoi je suis venu en Alsace plus
de trois semaines cette année et ai
dégusté plus de 650 vins différents.
Je suis également venu pour créer
une liste de mes 100 meilleurs vins
d’Alsace dégustés en 2015.
Les vins à base de riesling dominent
le top 100 de cette année et
proviennent des meilleurs vignobles
d’Alsace. Je suis toujours convaincu
que ce cépage est le communicateur
incontesté des meilleurs sols et
microclimats de la région. Voici la
raison pour laquelle près de la moitié
des vins sélectionnés dans mon
Top 100 sont des vins à base de
riesling qui proviennent de vignobles
exceptionnels, en appellation grand
cru ou non.
Mon vin d’Alsace de l’année illustre
mon propos. La famille Trimbach
sort un nouveau vin issu d’un
vignoble bien défini ou « lieu-dit »
(en anglais « single vineyard »),
le FE Trimbach Riesling Alsace
Grand Cru Geisberg, qui est un
riesling sec phénoménal montrant
toute la profondeur, l’intensité
et le caractère que ce coteau
extraordinaire peut produire.
C’est aussi un exemple louable

du nombre important de grands
producteurs d’Alsace qui adhèrent
à cette idée de mettre en bouteille
des vins issus de « lieux-dits »
offrant au monde du vin des crus
uniques d’endroits exceptionnels qui
sont en compétition avec les meilleurs
produits du monde entier. En fait,
presque tous les vins du Top 100 ont
en quelque sorte une désignation
provenant de « lieux-dits ».
Un autre point important dans mon
Top 100 est l’inclusion d’un grand
nombre de vins à base de pinot noir.
Les grands vins rouges d’Alsace
issus de ce cépage font partie des
meilleurs et des plus distinctifs du
monde. Ils allient la finesse et la
complexité des meilleurs Bourgognes
avec une minéralité qui leur est
propre et une structure linéaire qui ne
peut être reproduite nulle part ailleurs
sur la planète.
Cette liste étant très personnelle, j’ai
tendance à favoriser les vins secs,
sans pénaliser les vins mi-secs et doux
pour autant. Cette liste ne retranscrit
pas simplement l’ordre des vins les
mieux notés parmi les centaines de
vins que j’ai dégustés en Alsace cette
année. C’est une combinaison entre
les vins ayant reçu les meilleures
notes et ceux que j’ai trouvé les plus
remarquables lors de la dégustation,
et qui représentent les crus d’Alsace
parmi les meilleurs et les plus
intéressants en 2015.

My Top 10Alsace
Alsace is France’s most exciting
wine region at the moment. No
other area offers the diversity of
wines from such an array of grape
types, soils, microclimates and
producers, which in return gives
consumers some of the most
complex and unique wines in the
world. That’s why I came to Alsace
this year for over three weeks and
tasted more than 650 different
wines. I also came to create a list
of my 100 Top Alsace wines in
2015 from the wines I tasted.
Riesling dominates this year’s Top
100 list and from some of the best
vineyards in Alsace. I still believe
that the grape type is the best
communicator of the best soils and
microclimates of the region. This is
why almost half the wines in the Top
100 list are rieslings, and they are all
from superb vineyards, regardless if
they are rated grand cru or not.
My Alsace Wine of the Year
illustrates my point. A new single
vineyard bottling from the Trimbach
family, the FE Trimbach Riesling
Alsace Grand Cru Geisberg is a
phenomenal dry riesling showing all
the depth, intensity, and character
that this amazing hillside vineyard
can produce. It’s also a praise-
worthy example of how so many
of the top producers of Alsace are
embracing single vineyard bottles,
giving the wine world more unique
wines from unique places that
compete with the best anywhere in
the world. In fact, nearly all of the
wines in the Top 100 had some sort

of single vineyard designation.
Another important point in my Top
100 was the inclusion of so many
pinot noirs. The great reds of Alsace
are now some of the best and most
distinctive pinot noirs in the world.
They combine the finesse and
complexity of the best of Burgundy
with a special minerality and linear
structure that cannot be duplicated
anywhere else in the world.
As the list is very personal, I tend to
favor dry wines, although off-dry and
sweet wines were not penalized.
The list is not simply an order of the
top scoring wines from the hundreds
of Alsace wines I tasted this year.
It’s a combination of the top scoring
wines, and wines that I think are
the most exciting to drink. And, of
course, they represent some of the
best and most interesting wines in
Alsace in 2015.

MON CLASSEMENT DES 100 MEILLEURS VINS D’ALSACE
1. F E Trimbach Riesling Alsace Grand Cru Geisberg 2009
Superbes arômes d’aiguilles de pin, de minéraux, de mangues
coupées et de silex. Corsé et très mûr avec des fruits secs comme 98
de l’ananas, de la pêche ou encore du citron. Fabuleuse longueur; points
un vin sérieux. C’est le premier millésime d’un vin phénoménal de
la Maison Trimbach. Seulement 3,000 bouteilles produites.
Superb aromas of pine needles, minerals, sliced mango and flint. Full-bodied
and very ripe with dried fruits such as pineapple, peach and lemon. Fabulous
length and seriousness. This is the first vintage of a phenomenal wine with
Trimbach. Only 3,000 bottles made.
2. Domaine Zind-Humbrecht Riesling Alsace Grand Cru Rangen 2013
de Thann Clos Saint Urbain
Un riesling sec phénoménal comportant des arômes de citron
et d’ananas séchés ainsi que de zeste de citron vert, des notes 98
d’ardoise et de la minéralité. Corsé avec des notes très silex, points
métallique et de poire séchée. Très puissant. Magnifique. D’une
production de raisins en culture biodynamique.
A phenomenal dry riesling with dried lemon, dried pineapple, mineral, slate
and lime rind. Full-bodied and very flinty with gun metal and dried pear. Very
powerful. Amazing. Made from biodynamically grown grapes.
3. Albert Mann Pinot Noir Alsace Grand H 2013
Incroyables arômes de mûre avec des notes de terre, de céramique
et d’épice. Egalement de viande. Corsé et charpenté avec une 97
exceptionnelle longueur et profondeur. C’est magnifiquement long points
et structuré. Une belle acidité avec des tannins fermes et un beau
fruit. A boire maintenant. Seulement 1,000 bouteilles produites.
D’une production de raisins en culture biodynamique.
Amazing aromas of blackberries, soil, tile and spice. Meat too. Full body with
outstanding depth and length. It’s fantastically structured and long. Firm tannins and
bright fruit and acidity. Drink now. 1,000 bottles made. From biodyanmically grown
grapes.
4. Albert Boxler Riesling Alsace Grand Cru Brand 2013
C’est un vin phénoménal avec des arômes de tranches de pomme,
des notes minérales d’ardoise et de pierre. Puissant et corsé avec une 97
fabuleuse profondeur et intensité. Impressionnant. A boire maintenant. points
This is phenomenal with sliced apple, mineral, slate and stone. Full and
powerful with fabulous depth and intensity. Mind-boggling. Drink now.

5. Famille Hugel Riesling Alsace Sélection de Grains Nobles 2009
Ce vin doux d’Alsace est époustouflant avec une incroyable
concentration d’arômes de fruits secs comme l’ananas ou la 98
rhubarbe. Charpenté, très doux et éclatant. Incroyable légèreté points
et intensité. 220 grammes de sucre résiduel cependant frais et
équilibré. Provient du vignoble Angels Rebens qui est fait de pur
granite. Production de 600 bouteilles.
This is mind-bending sweet wine from Alsace with incredible concentration
of dried fruit such a pineapple and rhubarb. Full, very sweet and bright.
Unbelievable lightness and intensity. 220 grams of residual sugar. But fresh
and balanced. From Angels Rebens vineyard that is pure granite. 600 bottles
made.
6. Muré Riesling Alsace Grand Cru Vorbourg Clos Saint Landelin 2013
Incroyable clarté et brillance au nez avec des arômes de pomme
coupée, de poire, des notes minérales et de craie. Corsé, intense 97
et profond avec une texture phénolique tout en étant équilibré points
et long en bouche. Tellement d’intensité. Qualité phénoménale.
Peut concurrencer Clos St. Hune. A boire maintenant. D’une
production de raisins en culture biodynamique.
Incredible clarity and brilliance in the nose with sliced apple, pear and mineral
plus hints of chalk. Full-bodied, intense and deep with a phenolic texture, yet
balanced and long. So much intensity. Phenomenal quality. Competes with Clos
St. Hune. Drink now. Made from biodynamic grapes.
7. Valentin Zusslin Riesling Alsace Grand Cru Pfingstberg 2012
Un vin vif et exotique avec des subtils caractères de mangue,
d’ananas et également des notes minérales. Corsé. Formidable 97
profondeur et clarté. Il a une profondeur que l’on peut retrouver points
dans les meilleurs grands crus de Bourgogne. A boire maintenant.
This is an exotic and vibrant wine with subtle mango, pineapple and mineral
character. Full body. Amazing clarity and depth. This is a deep and profound as
a top grand cru of Burgundy. Drink now.

8. Famille Hugel Riesling Alsace Grossi Laüe 2010
La pureté de ce vin est déjà phénoménale aujourd’hui, composé
d’arômes de pomme coupée, de melon avec de la minéralité 97
et une pointe de craie. Il est corsé, dense et compact avec une points
superbe finale. On perçoit une touche presque salée sur la
finale. Egalement des fruits secs à base de citron, de citron vert
ou de papaye. Issu des meilleures parcelles du Schoenenbourg. Très long et
incroyable. Persiste pendant des minutes en bouche. Formidable maintenant
mais avec un potentiel de vieillissement sans fin. Je m’émerveille devant sa
complexité et de sa plénitude.
The purity of this wine is phenomenal now with sliced apple, melon, mineral and
hints of chalk. It’s full-bodied, dense and compacted with a super finish. There is
almost a saltiness on the finish. Dried fruits too, such as lemon, lime and papaya.
From the best parcel of the Schonenberg. Very long and incredible. Goes on
for minutes. So amazing now but will age forever. I marvel in its complexity and
completeness.
9. Domaine Weinbach Gewurztraminer Alsace Altenbourg 2010
Sélection de Grains Nobles
Caractères d’abricot séché, de pêche et d’amande avec une
pointe de zeste d’orange. Corsé, très doux et puissant. Il persiste 97
en bouche pendant des minutes. A boire ou garder encore en points
cave.
Dried apricot, peach and almond character with hints of orange peel. Full-
bodied, very sweet and powerful. It goes on for minutes. Drink or hold.
10. Famille Hugel Pinot Noir Alsace Les Neveux 2009
Purs et uniques arômes de champignon, d’écorce et de fruits
noirs. Si limpide. Charpenté avec une merveilleuse texture de 97
velours qui anticipe des arômes de fruits noirs, de terre et de truffe points
noire. Environ 2,000 bouteilles produites. Une longue vie devant
lui mais déjà incroyable. A boire ou garder en cave.
Soulful and unique aromas of mushroom, bark and dark fruits. So clear. Full
body with a wonderful texture of velvet that moves to dark fruits and hints

d’Alsace et Terroirs
L’Alsace est un petit vignoble
français d’environ 16 000 ha.
Situé dans l’est de la France, il
produit un grand nombre de vins
dont certains portent la mention
« grand cru ». Cette mention,
qui désigne un lieu-dit classé,
impose également des règles de
production plus strictes tels qu’un
rendement plus faible (55hl/ha)
et un lien à l’origine affirmé. Le
vin revendique ainsi un terroir
et permet de l’exprimer dans la
dégustation
Le sol est dans cette région une
mosaïque qui fait apparaitre
plusieurs époques géologiques
affleure de coteaux. Pour cause, la
poussée des Alpes a entrainé un
effondrement de ce qu’on appelle
aujourd’hui le bassin rhénan. Ce
phénomène, associé à l’érosion,
permet à ces différentes couches
géologiques de se retrouver à
la surface, voire de se mélanger.
Ainsi se côtoient des roches
métamorphiques tel granit, grès,
schiste ou encore volcan et des
roches sédimentaires tel le calcaire,
marnes, argiles ou loess. Cette
variété est visible à l’œil nu, parfois à
quelques mètre d’intervalle.
Le vigneron profite aussi d’un
climat semi-continental propice à
la vigne. Protégé des pluies par la
barrière des Vosges, l’hydrométrie
est une des plus faibles de France.
Le vignoble, exposé au sud et à
l’est, bénéficie du soleil du matin,
permettant une maturité optimale

des baies. Le vent de la plaine,
dit Foehn, associé aux nombreux
courants descendant les vallées
vosgiennes, permet un état sanitaire
idéal et l’obtention de surmaturité
par le développement du botritys
cinérea.
L’histoire tumultueuse de cette
région, convoitée car située au
carrefour de l’Europe, a engendré
la présence d’une multitude de
cépages. On peut les différencier en 3
sortes. Les cépages Rhénan : Riesling
et Sylvaner blanc et rouge ; les
cépages importés par les Romains:
le Gewurztraminer et les Muscats; et
les cépages issus d’échanges avec les
régions voisines : Pinot Blanc, Gris ou
Noir, Chardonnay (pour les crémants)
avec la Bourgogne, Auxerrois avec la
Lorraine.
De cette multitude de cépages ont
été désignés 4 nobles, c’est-à-dire
propices à la production de vins de
terroirs: Riesling, Pinot Gris, Muscats
et Gewurztraminer. A ces derniers,
on peut ajouter le Pinot Noir, qui
avec le réchauffement climatique,
produit des vins rouges en constante
progression.
Comme dans d’autres régions,
une délimitation minutieuse des
parcelles a été faite par les moines
et les seigneurs à travers les âges.
Généralement, elles reflètent l’unité
géologique d’un vignoble. Certains
lieux-dits ont ainsi acquis une
réputation qualitative qui a traversé
le temps.
The Vineyards

Mais la région, située au cœur des
guerres tragiques du 20ème siècle,
a été freinée dans la reconnaissance
de sa production de cru, témoin
de la richesse de ses terroirs. C’est
seulement en 1975 que fut reconnu
le Schlossberg de Kayserberg et
que l’AOC Alsace Grand Cru fut
créée. A ce jour, on compte 51
lieux dits classés en Grand Cru.
Chacun possède une identité et
un « terroir » propre qu’il essaie de
retranscrire dans le vin.
Les grands crus ont, après 40 ans
d’existence, mis en avant la diversité
que la région peut offrir. Ces vins
représentent le haut du panier
du vignoble et sont devenus les
Alsace Wine Region and its “Terroirs”
Alsace is a small French wine
region spread over about
16,000 ha. Located in the east

bourguignon, de lieux dits classés
premier cru. Un pas de plus vers la
reconnaissance des nombreuses
possibilités qu’offre le vignoble. Ne
manque aujourd’hui qu’une manière
de rendre compréhensible cette
approche qui fait de ce vignoble un
endroit unique.

The rise of the Alps mountain
range lead to the collapse of
what we called today the Rhine
basin. This phenomenon topped
with natural erosion allowed the
geological layers to reach the
surface and to blend. This is why in
Alsace, we can find metamorphic
rocks such as granite, sandstone,
schist and volcanic rocks along
with sedimentary rocks such as
limestone, marl, clay and loess in the
same vineyard. This can be visible
to the naked eye when strolling into
the vineyards.
The winemaker also benefits from
a semi-continental climate ideal
for wine production. Protected
by the Vosges Mountains, the
region’s rainfall is one of the lowest
in France. The vineyard is mostly
south and east facing with morning
sunshine, allowing a perfect ripeness
of the berries. The Foehn wind that
blows across the valley maintains
ideal sanitary conditions and allows
berries over-ripeness with the
development of botritys cinerea
(noble rot).
Alsace’s troubled history and
geographical situation lead to the
planting of a large array of grape
varietals. They can be sorted in
three categories: the Rhine grapes
(riesling, sylvaner white and red);
the grapes brought by Romans
(gewürztraminer and muscat
varietals); and grapes from nearby
regions (pinot blanc, gris ou noir and
chardonnay [for the cremant wines]
from Burgundy and Auxerrois with
Lorraine).
Only four of these grapes are
identified as “noble” in Alsace:
riesling, pinot gris, muscat and
gewurztraminer. Thanks to global
warming, pinot noir is now a serious
grape offering red wines with
constant improvement.
Forty years after their creation, the
grands crus wines have shown the
diversity that Alsace can offer. These
wines represent best expressions
and are the flagship of Alsace’s
terroir. The grape becomes a
vessel that expresses the identity
and complexity of the classified
grand cru “lieu-dit.” The geological
diversity offers a large array of wine
profiles and flavor expressions.
A bright future lies ahead of
Alsace with the implementation
of premier cru (or first growth)
“lieux-dits” following the Burgundy
appellation system; one step further
in the awareness of the numerous
possibilities that Alsace vineyards
offer. Only missing nowadays is a
way to communicate about this
system and the uniqueness of the
Alsace vineyards.

As in other French wine regions,

monks and lords have strictly
defined vineyard parcels over
time. They generally reflect the
geographical unity of the vineyard.
Some classified locations or “lieux-
dits” have acquired a qualitative
reputation that traveled through
time.

However, the region has been

slowed down in its worldwide
recognition process due to the
wars of the 20th century. It was
only in 1975 that Schlossberg of
Kaysersberg was identified and the
AOC Alsace Grand Cru was created.
Nowadays, there are 51 “lieux-dits”
that are “Grand Cru” classified.
Each of them has its own terroir and
identity that it tries to reveal in its
wines.
