Integrating Culture in the Curriculum

1-Setting goals for teaching culture:

 Raising attitudes towards the target society; students will be guided to experience
intellectual curiosity about the target culture and empathy towards its people.
 Discovering how behaviour is conditioned by culture: students will acquire an
understanding

 The interaction of the language and socio-cultural variables such as: sex, age,
social classes...: students will become aware of socio-cultural restrictions upon the
use of language.
 Cultural connotations of words and phrases: students will develop awareness that
cultural images are associated with common words such as proverbs, idioms...
 Raising awareness about social conventions and social behaviour in specific
situations: students will understand that conventions constrain how people act in
common situations in the target culture.
 Evaluating the culture: students will be able to make, evaluate and refine
generalities concerning the target culture.
 Students will be able to locate and organise information about the target culture.

2-selecting the cultural content to include in the curriculum:

Claire Kramsch (1995) claims three-3 links or types of cultural content to discuss in the
classroom: universal links, national links, and local links

2-1-universal links: imply the culture that can be shared by various language speakers across
social and national boundaroies.

2-2-national links: refer to the cultures separated by the national boundaries such as English
culture, ..... (big “C” culture).

2-3-local links: are related to the culture expressed through the words and actions of everyday
speakers : in: everyday

It is believed that the integration of both target and native cultural is beneficial for learners.
Big “C” and little “c” cultures are both required in order to help learners gain an understanding of
the target culture.
Examples of cultural aspects to include in the curriculum:

 Beliefs, attitudes, time and space patterns, work values.


 Foods: including regular patterns of eating, socio-linguistic and behavioural rules related to
eating. Including cultural taboos related to food such as “pork” in the Algerian culture; table
manners such as the use of different spoons, forks and knives in the target culture.
 A collection of oral history leads to not only learning skills but also to teaching respect for
traditional members of the community.

 Aspects of religion such as special days, health, science, laws, holidays...which have a
religious or cultural significance/interpreted in different ways through cultures.
 History and traditions that are of interest to the students. That is, not to include all historical
events of the native or the target countries but select those which can be interest (have
relationship with the group or with the context in which learning takes place) such as
civilisation.
 Literature, music, arts, and paintings....
