The Prime Guide 2023
Comme chaque année, AD publie son hors-série spécial décoration. Et c’est par un
décryptage des grandes tendances du moment que nous débutons ce numéro : rayures chics,
fleurs baroques… C’est aussi du côté des récentes ouvertures d’hôtels et de restaurants
que nous sommes allés chercher l’inspiration à travers dix idées fortes passées au crible.
Nous avons souhaité faire la part belle à l’artisanat d’art français à travers une série de
portraits de tisserands, marqueteurs ou ébénistes-sculpteurs qui revisitent leurs savoir-faire
pour faire naître l’émotion. À découvrir également, les projets de ces artistes qui investissent
le champ de l’architecture d’intérieur et un focus sur les nouveaux visages de la décoration
avec lesquels il va falloir compter. Sans oublier notre répertoire de 90 pages qui réunit
une sélection pointue de nouveautés, des papiers peints aux tapisseries en passant par les
revêtements d’exception.
AD is proud to present its annual special edition on interior decor. This year,
we open the issue by decoding the major trends of the moment, from chic stripes to baroque
florals... We also took inspiration from recent hotel and restaurant openings, sifted here
into ten standout ideas. We also wanted to give French arts and crafts pride of place with profiles
of the weavers, marquetry experts and cabinetmakers who revisit traditional savoir-faire
to spark fresh emotion. Also in this edition: a look at how artists are moving into interior
architecture, and a feature on the latest must-know names in decor. And, of course, we’ve
included a 90-page directory with a forward-looking product selection, from wallpaper
and tapestries to exceptional coverings..

Age of Enlightenment
For rooms in the recently opened Le Grand Mazarin, the
Swedish interior designer Martin Brudnizki used antique ta-
pestries as bed canopies. The hotel’s design signature,
17th-century “Grand Siècle” classicism, mingles harmo-
niously with more contemporary elements such as this lamp
and rug, as well as with the room’s soft color palette.

Fantaisie, Martin Brudnizki a parié sur un décor
joyeux et coloré. Dans les chambres, on retrouve
des ondulations ludiques où motifs et formes s’en-
tremêlent à travers différents éléments de déco-
ration (mobilier, tête de lit, tapis) pour un rendu
enthousiasmant, presque psychédélique.

Martin Brudnizki opted to give the Hotel La
Fantaisie, his latest Paris-based project, a joyful,
vibrant decor. Rooms feature playful undulations
and a mashup of patterns and shapes on assorted
decorative elements (furniture, headboards, car-
pets), to beguiling and almost psychedelic effect.

C’est l’esprit Rive Gauche iconique de la capitale qui a animé

l’architecture intérieure de Raphael Navot pour l’hôtel Dame
des Arts. Ainsi a-t-il habillé les murs des chambres et du res-
taurant de demi-cylindres de chêne cannelés, créant des jeux
d’ombres et de textures particulièrement accueillants, en ré-
ponse aux stries de cuir avoisinantes.
Fluted Woodwork
Raphael Navot’s interiors for the Hôtel Dame des Arts are ins-
pired by the French capital’s distinctive Left Bank spirit. In
rooms and the restaurant alike, walls are clad in half-cylinders
of fluted oak, creating a particularly welcoming play of shadow
and texture to complement leather accents found throughout.

que Laura Gonzalez a repris ce dernier, un de ses

rant méditerranéen Dar Mima de Paris Society,
situé sur le toit de l’Institut du monde arabe.
Plays on Paisley
Originally from Persia, paisley first arrived in
Europe in the 18th century thanks to the first ex-
peditions eastward. It was therefore only natural
that Laura Gonzalez would pick up on that motif
for t he c u r t a i ns at Da r M i ma , t he new
Mediterranean restaurant by Paris Society on the
rooftop of the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris.

Proustian Charms
In the 19th century, the exotic and precious qualities of chinoi-
serie made it all the rage; today Jacques Garcia brings it into
the here and now at the Hôtel Proust, in the heart of the Marais.
Or, rather, replaces it in its original context, since the hotel’s
concept is a tribute to the splendors of the Belle Epoque and
the salons Marcel Proust might have frequented in his day.

avec douceur et modernité, se démarquant de l’esthétique bis-

Modern Mural
Murals move indoors at the Hoxton Barcelona, notably in a bar
done in arty, Mediterranean style by the interior design team
at AIME Studios. A colorful fresco hand-painted by the artist
Maria Marvila follows the curves of the counter, lending an
otherwise classic bistro decor a modern air.

In Paris, at the Mediterranean-inspired restau-
rant Carmona, Alexis Mabille extends an invita-
tion to Andalusia. Decorative arches encrusted
with white shells contrast with the walls’ terra-
cotta hue, creating a warm and sophisticated win-
ter garden atmosphere.

Originaire du Sud de la France, ce duo d’ébénistes associe savoir-faire séculaires et lignes vision-
naires. Puisant leur inspiration dans une Antiquité fantasmée et dans les fonds sous-marins
méditerranéens, ces deux trentenaires sculptent l’érable sycomore à la meuleuse puis le creusent
manuellement pour lui donner cet aspect si singulier de récif corallien ou de céramique fossilisée.
Poétiques et organiques, leurs pièces en série limitée ont séduit instantanément les architectes d’in-
térieur François Champsaur et Marion Mailaender et la galerie Armel Soyer qui les expose depuis
2022 dans sa galerie.
Natives of the South of France, this cabinetmaking duo blends time-honored savoir-faire with
visionary lines. Drawing inspiration from an imagined Antiquity or the Mediterranean depths, the two
thirty-somethings use a grinder to sculpt sycamore maple, hollowing it out by hand to give it the singular
aspect of coral reef or fossilized ceramic. Their poetic, organic limited-edition pieces instantly caught
the attention of interior designers like François Champsaur and Marion Mailaender as well as the gallery
Armel Soyer, which has been showing them since 2022.

At just 29, Rose Ekwé seems headed for bright horizons! A determined
and enterprising young talent — the winner of the Mulhouse City Design
Prize (2019), the Michelle and Antoine Riboud Foundation (2022), and cur-
rently in residence at the Jardin des Métiers d’Art et du Design in Sèvres,
outside Paris —has developed an innovative spinning technique using
brown algae harvested in Brittany and European flax. “The material is bio-
sourced, compostable, and patented as Gélotextiles, which resembles
lanyard thread but is part of a circular process,” says the designer, whose
wall hangings, movable room dividers and blinds are already proving
popular with interior decorators and luxury brands.

charme de la texture et du toucher de la pierre de
lave – un matériau millénaire – au point de quit-
ter la Touraine pour l’Auvergne, région d’où l’on
extrait cette roche volcanique, cette artisane
d’art façonne et émaille avec dextérité les plaques
cuites à 990°C pour les transformer en mobilier
ou revêtements muraux, aux motifs géomé-
triques ou dégradés. « Cette pierre extraite de la
Chaîne des Puys offre une infinité de possibilités et
de coloris », explique la fondatrice de ce studio,
créé en 2018 avec son associée Jessica Richard, et
adoubé aujourd’hui par l’architecte d’intérieur
Tristan Auer ou le cabinet d’architecture Mersi.

Beguiled by the texture and feel of age-old lava
stone, she left her native Touraine region for the
Auvergne, where volcanic rock is extracted, and
set about artfully shaping and enameling pieces
that are fired at 990°C to become furniture or wall
treatments with geometric or gradient motifs.

Raphaëlle Robert and Guillaume Fantin first met in school, at École Bleue. Then, their
paths diverged: to Marie Deroudilhe and Thierry Lemaire for her, and to Andrée Putman
and Joseph Dirand for him — all formidable experiences. Little surprise, then, that today
their projects convey a certain clarity with respect to volume and the importance of design
can be felt down to the tiniest detail, be it in furniture collections or this recently completed
house in southeast France. Next up are office spaces and two penthouses in Tel Aviv.

Doté d’un diplôme d’architecture intérieure,
Simon Basquin est parti apprendre le métier à
Shanghaï en 2010. Six ans plus tard, il revient à
Paris où il fait un bref passage chez LVMH, avant
de se lancer en solo en 2019. Si on lui doit le bel
écrin épuré de la Galerie Maxime Flatry, c’est sur-
tout le résidentiel qui l’a occupé ces derniers
temps. Une maison au Vésinet, deux appartements
à Paris… Autant de projets où l’étude des volumes

se rapproche volontiers de l’architecture afin de
valoriser la forte présence du mobilier en tant que
tel, sans qu’il se fonde dans un décor trop sage. Une
approche discrète qui a déjà conquis les proprié-
taires d’un hôtel particulier à Lille, d’une galerie
et d’un appartement à Paris, tous en chantier.
In 2010, as a newly minted graduate in
interior architecture, Simon Basquin set out to
learn his trade in Shanghai. Six years later he
returned to Paris, where he briefly worked for
LVMH before striking out on his own, in 2019.
Perhaps most widely known for Galerie Maxime
Flatry’s beautiful and refined setting, he’s been
spending most of his time on residential spaces
of late. A house in Le Vésinet, two apartments in
Paris... with every project, the study of volume
seems to dovetail with architecture, enhancing
furniture so that it doesn’t fade into the décor. His
discreet approach has already won over the
owners of a private mansion in Lille, and of a
gallery or an apartment in Paris — all projects that
are currently in the works.

Diplômé de l’École Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Versailles, Maxime Bousquet
est ensuite passé par les agences de Joseph Dirand et de Studio KO. Un CV sans faute qui
l’a sûrement aidé au moment de signer ses premiers projets parisiens, dont ce duplex
sous les toits réalisé pour un jeune collectionneur dans un esprit de « garçonnière chic »
mâtinée d’une douceur minimaliste. L’architecte a déjà sa méthode : réunir un maxi-
mum de références en amont au sein d’un book, pour pouvoir raconter une nouvelle his-
toire à chaque occasion, où les évocations du passé croisent les inspirations contempo-
raines. Une maison dans le VIIe arrondissement est en cours, ainsi que des appartements
à Paris et Biarritz, sans oublier le développement des boutiques et de l’identité visuelle
de la marque Rouje.

Derrière ce nom se cachent Alexy Kos et Che Huang, deux anciens étudiants de l’Uni-
versity of the Arts de Londres - le premier y suivait des cours d’architecture intérieure
tandis que le second se spécialisait en design. Forts de cette double casquette et d’une
riche expérience à travers différentes agences internationales, ils décident de s’associer
en 2018 et le succès ne s’est pas fait attendre. Le restaurant St John’s Wood de Londres,
ce sont eux, sans compter plusieurs boutiques livrées dans la capitale britannique et cet
appartement dans Mayfair, imaginé pour un hôtelier-restaurateur dans un mélange de
références allant du modernisme à l’Art déco. C’est surtout leur approche « cinémato-
graphique », comme ils aiment la décrire, qui frappe d’emblée. Gageons qu’elle sera à
l’œuvre dans l’hôtel sur lequel ils travaillent actuellement à New York.

national agencies, they decided to join forces in 2018. Success soon followed. St John’s
Wood restaurant in London is their work, as are several stores in the British capital and
this apartment in Mayfair, designed for a hotelier-restaurateur with a mix of references
ranging from modernism to Art Deco. What’s immediately striking is a style they like
to describe as “cinematic”. Here’s betting that it will come into play at the hotel they are
currently doing in New York.

the École Duperré and led to textile design for Christian Lacroix and Kenzo. Interior design came after training at the École Boulle,
drawing numerous residential projects in the Basque Country and in Paris. Among them is this apartment in the 7th arrondissement

Basée entre Paris et Marseille, cette ancienne de l’ENSAD de Paris est pas-
sée par les agences de Pierre-Yves Rochon, Studio KO et enfin Gilles et
Boissier, avant de se lancer en solo en 2019. Les premiers appartements pa-
risiens ont ainsi vu le jour, illustrant déjà la capacité d’Alicia Luxem à adap-
ter son style en fonction de l’histoire des lieux, tout en distillant çà et là les
différents codes esthétiques hérités de ses années passées à l’étranger –
Australie, Chypre, Île Maurice… Et ce n’est pas fini, puisqu’une maison et
un appartement sont actuellement en chantier à Paris, sans oublier l’appar-
tement qu’elle termine dans un immeuble de Fernand Pouillon à Marseille.
Based between Paris and Marseille, ENSAD Paris alumna Alicia Luxem

ment international puisqu’il démarre aux États-
Unis, puis rejoint Lima, passe par l’agence
Arquitectonica de Bernardo Fort-Brescia à Miami,
avant d’arriver à l’École Spéciale d’Architecture à
Paris. C’est ici qu’il choisit de fonder sa propre
agence en 2014, enchaînant les projets essentiel-
lement résidentiels, à l’image du grand apparte-
ment haussmannien et de la maison à Anglet livrés
cette année. Autant de contextes où Diego
Delgado-Elias a su adapter son éclectisme à l’es-
prit des lieux d’origine, un élément qui reste à la
base de son approche et le guidera sans doute pour
terminer l’hôtel particulier en Provence et la col-
lection de mobilier autoédité qu’il termine
actuellement.
A citizen of the world, the Peruvian architect
got his start in the United States, then went to
Lima by way of Ber na rdo For t-Brescia’s

An apartment in London.
Après des études à la Bocconi de Milan, cet Italien a mis le cap

sur Londres il y a douze ans. C’est ici qu’il s’est lancé dans la
décoration en autodidacte, commençant par chiner du mobi-
lier XXe siècle, avant d’ouvrir son agence en 2017 pour signer
ses propres projets. Ébénisterie, tapisserie, les savoir-faire des
manufactures françaises sont au centre de sa démarche, rai-
son pour laquelle Francesco Paolini partage désormais son
temps entre Paris et Londres, où il vient notamment de termi-
ner l’appartement d’un grand collectionneur d’Art déco.
D’autres projets résidentiels sont en cours, ainsi que l’atelier
londonien d’un tailleur pour homme.
After graduating from Bocconi in Milan twelve years ago,
Francesco Paolini headed to London. It was there that he
began decorating as a self-taught artist, starting with hunting
down 20th-century furniture before opening his namesake
agency to design his own projects, in 2017. Cabinetmaking,
upholstery, and French manufacturing savoir-faire are at the
center of his process, which is why the Italian designer now di-
vides his time between Paris and London, where notably he
has just completed the apartment of a major Art Deco collec-
tor. Other residential projects are underway, as well as the
London studio of a men’s tailor.
