boost of self-confidence. The results of the ongoing
symbiotic relationship between design and sports,
as shown in this exhibition, are aesthetically stunning
objects and materials that simultaneously serve
incredibly functional purposes.

But the impact of design within sports extends far

beyond the shape, look, and feel of equipment. A
ball’s weight or the responsiveness of a keyboard
actually define the speed of a game. Technology
enhances human capabilities and compensates for
so-called deficiencies. Games - both physical and
digital - are controlled by the fine-tuned designs of
rules and regulations. Even the spectators’ experience
is carefully designed, from camera placements and
drone footage to online streaming platforms as well
as the look and feel of a stadium. It is an expanded
understanding and awareness of this ever-changing
impact that drives the future of design and sports.

The exhibition outlines the process of how design

initiates such fundamental and far-reaching changes
in sports. “MATCH” showcases how things have
been made historically but also how advanced
technologies and digital manufacturing are spurring
a shift away from standardized models and toward
individualized equipment. Moreover, it explores the

Could you tell us about one of your flagship

projects?
One notable project in this context is “Champions,” a
project I developed for Galerie Kreo in Paris in 2011.
The project comprised a series of eight different
tables made from aluminium and lacquered with
fictional sports graphics. The tables are clearly
inspired by sporting equipment like bikes, skis, and
race cars, yet the graphics have no meaning other
than to create an illusion that outgrows the objective
reality of the product. In the world of sports, speed,
performance, and strength are essential, and
graphics are used to underline these attributes.
So, the project was not just about surface
decoration: I was interested in the psychology of
graphics on products and, more specifically, in
how the semantics of certain colours, words, and
symbols change the perception of an object.

What do you think is in store for the future of

sports?
Beyond the rising importance of data which I
mentioned earlier, I believe many elements of sports
will stay the same. I especially believe humans will
always be at the centre of sport because people
are what make sport sport. The fascination with and
emotions surrounding sport are all very human, and
the athlete will always be at the centre of the game.
At the same time, though, data, technology, and
digitalization will continue to drive developments.
The way we participate in sports like eSports and
engage in spectator experiences will change.
Technological developments will bring us much
closer to the game.

and responsiveness of an athlete’s wheelchair is
essential, so custom chairs feature special wheel
arrangements to enable quick changes in direction
and precise movements. Meanwhile, in wheelchair
racing, aerodynamism is of more significance.
Thus, these wheelchairs are lightweight, sturdy,
and offer minimal wind resistance. They are often
designed using high-tech materials such as high
grade aircraft aluminum, titanium, or carbon fiber–
reinforced plastic to create an optimal balance
between weight and durability. [...]

As such, all wheelchairs, prostheses, and orthoses

used in competitions function purely mechanically.
They serve to enable an athlete’s best performance
but not to improve their athletic ability. In the
development of devices, the focus is on achieving
the most optimal interaction between the medical Ottobock
devices and the athletes—and the technological Invader
design of the devices play a key role in this. Rugby wheelchair

3. Reimagining Bicycle Craftsmanship

James Marr, Founder, Bamboo Bicycle Club

[...]

With over 1,500 species it can be grown almost

anywhere in the world making it both accessible and
sustainable for builders globally. It also has many
qualities that make it ideal for bicycle construction; it has
a natural aerodynamic tube shape and comes in various
diameters, it has a high weight to strength ratio, and a
unique vibration dampening characteristic.

Bamboo also has a negative carbon footprint, as it

absorbs 30% more CO2 than traditional timber, making
it one of the key materials in climate change migration.
Bamboo, however, can be difficult to join due to its’ wall
thickness and structure. As part of our build techniques
we therefore incorporate lugs (socket like connections
that join the main triangle tubes) to construct the
frame, which are made from recycled aluminium. But
for more complex builds we also use other materials
in our process to make these connections such as flax
composite and carbon fibre, which when combined with
bamboo to form a unique bio composite bicycle frame.

Shigeru Ban
The Musée du Luxembourg called on Shigeru Ban
and Jean de Gastines, architects renowned for the
aesthetic quality and environmental awareness of
their work, to design all the interior fittings for the
Museum’s public spaces. In particular, they specially
created a series of furnishings made from recycled
cardboard tubes (benches, tables, counters), which
were installed in 2011.

Two temporary outdoor structures were also erected

to house the restaurant-tea room at the front of the

Museum, and educational workshops and private
events at the rear. In 2020, these two structures
underwent major renovation work, notably to their
facades, in order to restore the transparency desired
by their designer, and thus enable perfect synergy
between the interior of the buildings and their
immediate surroundings.

Shigeru Ban is a Japanese architect of international

renown. He is renowned for his use of paper and
cardboard materials in his buildings, in line with his
humanitarian and environmental concerns. In 1994, he
designed the Miyake Design Studio Gallery in Tokyo;
in 1995, the Kobe Paper Church; in 2000, the Japan
Pavilion at the Hanover World Expo, in collaboration
with Frei Otto; and in 2013, the Cardboard Cathedral
in Christchurch.

The strong identity of his work has prompted
institutions such as New York’s MoMa and the
Guggenheim Foundation to commission him
to design temporary installations. In 2014, he
was awarded the Pritzker Prize, which each year
recognizes the work of a living architect who
has demonstrated, through his projects and
achievements, the different facets of his talent and
who has made a significant contribution
to architecture.

Together with Jean de Gastines, he delivered the

Centre Pompidou in Metz in May 2010 and the Seine
Musicale in Boulogne-Billancourt in 2017.
