3D printed biomaterials after having optimized the 3D conditions (by sandblasting) (Question
1).
To carry out the experiment, the basic chosen biomaterial is titanium, which was used
in the form of Ti-6Al-4V and prepared either by 3D printing with optimization by sandblasting
or prepared by machine cutting (Question 2). Different physical properties of the tested
samples were studied such as laser spacing, flexural strength with the fractography,
hydrophilicity, morphology of the samples, surface condition, average height of surface
roughness by SEM (Questions 3,4,5). These biomaterials were brought into contact with
human mesenchymal cells and fibroblasts to study their cell adhesion capacity and cell
differentiation (Question 6).
The results show that laser spacing during 3D DMLS printing has a major role on
surface finish and mechanical properties (such as flexural strength). An optimization of the
DMLS by sandblasting in post-processing improves hydrophilicity due to the reduction of
surface roughness (Question 7).
However, the biological properties are equivalent between 3D printing and machine cutting:
the expression of genes favourable to osteogenesis and cell adhesion is enhanced (Question
7).
To conclude, the preparation of biomaterials with DMLS technology and surface
optimization can be useful for dental applications (implants, etc).
