Chrysophyllum albidum (camite africaine en Franais) est un arbre tropical feuillage persistant qui appartient la famille des sapotaceae. Il est reconnu au Bnin sous les noms vernaculaires suivants :

Fon, Yorouba, Nago : Azongogwe, Azonbobwe. Goun : Azonvivo, Azonvovwe, Azonbebi.

Son fruit est gnralement appel pomme toile blanche ou African star apple en Anglais.

Description botanique[modifier]
Chrysophyllum albidum est un arbre tropical feuillage persistant. Il atteint des dimensions moyennes comprises entre 25 et 37 mtres de haut avec une circonfrence de maturit variant en moyenne entre 1,5 et 8 mtres. Son bois est gnralement cannel, son corce est mince, ple au vert bruntre, exsudant barre oblique blanche, latex gommeuse. Lespce dispose des feuilles simples, vert fonc dessus, fauve ple en dessous quand il est jeune et blanc argent dessous de maturit, de forme oblongue-elliptiques obovales elliptiques allonges, 12-30 cm de long, 3,8 10 cm de large; sommet courtement acumin, base cuniforme ; latrales primaires nerfs largement espacs, 9-14 de chaque ct de la nervure mdiane ; secondaire nervures latrales indistinctes ou invisible ; ptiole 1.7 4.2 cm de long.
Genus Chrysophyllum

Shrubs or trees. Leaves alternate; stipules absent. Flowers small, 2 to many fascicled and axillary, pedicellate or sessile. Sepals 5(or 6), usually glabrous or inside tomentose. Corolla tubecampanulate, usually extended, (4- or) 5--11-lobed. Stamens (4 or) 5--10 in 1 whorl, inserted in throat and opposite corolla lobes; staminodes absent. Ovary 1--10-locular, villous or glabrous. Style longer to shorter than ovary. Fruit 1--8-seeded, exocarp thick to very thin. Seed coatpapery to crusty; scar narrow to wide, lateral, sometimes almost covering entire seed. About 70 species: Madagascar; tropical and subtropical America, tropical Africa and Asia; one species in China.[1]

Notes DESCRIPTION: It is a small to medium buttressed tree species, up to 25-37 m in height with a mature girth varying from 1.5 to 2 m. Bole is usually fluted, frequently free of branches for 21 m. Leaves are simple, dark green above, oblong-elliptic to elongate obovate elliptic, 12-30 cm long and 3.8-10 cm broad. Fruits almost spherical, slightly pointed at the tip, about 3.2 cm in diameter, greenish-grey when immature, turning orange-red, yellow-brown or yellow, sometimes with speckles. USE: The fleshy and juicy fruits, which are popularly eaten, are the potential source of a soft drink. Wood brownish-white, soft, coarse and open in grain; very perishable in contact with the ground. Easy to saw and plane, nails well, takes a fine polish, and therefore is suitable for construction work, tool handles and similar purposes. The fruits can be fermented and distilled for the production of wine and spirits. GROWING PERIOD: Perennial. COMMON NAMES: White star apple. FURTHER INF: It is a tree of the rainforest.
